Idk, these misses in the portal are really concerning me. We have the funds to get them, but why arent we? Lack of pushing a commitment? Lack of aggressiveness when offering? Mixture of both? The OL is really worrisome for next year, idk why some of you all are not seeing that. We have yet to even start a hs recruit Elarbee brought in
You better be concerned about your culture. You pay too much to an OL guy then even if you don't lose a guy like Cooper Mayes, you do show these new guys coming in they can't trust you for your word and they will expect more or portal sooner than later. They have a plan concerning how much they pay and what they expect and how you can make more, if they waver from it, you can expect problems you do not want. It is not a hard concept. Like Ace said, these guys are wanting more than we would give Seaton and they want guarantees to start and if you screw Campbell over and pay more to bring a guy in then you have an issue with trust for the entire team. You can't say one thing as a staff and then do the opposite if you want long term success.

I hate stories like this.

It just puts out a negative vibe about Tennessee and ignores that it was a previous staff.
It doesn’t ignore anything. It clearly identifies Pruitt as the offending moron. You just have to have the ability to read the actual story rather than simply looking at the headline.

I talk regularly with a P5 OL coach. The transfer OTs know they are in high demand and most have unreasonable NIL demands. In addition many want to be promised to play LT. That combination makes recruiting more difficult, especially if you have a proven LT.
Many also want to be promised they will start. These circumstances can lead to terrible morale within the position group when you overpay for someone who has not proven to put in the work and be a good teammate.
Hell, if that’s the case, roll with what we got. A healthy locker room trumps talent from one player.

This happens all around the country. I hate that his scholarship was pulled by Pruitt, but we got Hooker. I’m sure Penix would’ve been great at UT, but we’ll never know. On the positive side, we got Hooker.

This staff was always going to be walking into a problem this year because of the 2021 class (Christian Charles is the only player left). OL is a development position and that gap was going to hit us in year 4/5. They have done a good job to this point recruiting portal OL (hit on Campbell, Mincey, Crawford). They also did a good job to keep Mays and Campbell around for next year. Hopefully, Spraggins too. Losing Mincey early hurts.

The good news is we have the two most important positions locked down. Karic, Lampley give you some serviceable senior leadership at the guard position. We have a few younger guys who are now reaching the point where you expect OL to contribute as depth. There is always the chance that the 1st/2nd year guys will be be ahead of schedule.

Most importantly, despite the weeping and gnashing of teeth, this staff has had a top shelf Offense every year they have been here, which requires a really good OL. That’s enough evidence for me to wait and see what the OL looks like in fall camp.

Just got home and my sons wife lost her baby Josie at 31 weeks. We are at a loss for words. His wife did not think she would be able to get pregnant or she was told as she continues a thyroid cancer battle and everything was going really well. A little VN prayer or a thought today for that little girl and the family if a moment.

😔 So sorry!

🙏🙏🙏

Honestly Cooper returning has me far less worried about the OL. We shuffled bodies all season and the OL was at its worse when Cooper wasn't playing C.

Our staff isn't going to promise or guarantee anyone a starting role and almost ALL of the portal OL guys are looking for opportunities to start. Mincey is a rarity, he asked for more NIL got it and is still trying to up his $$$ even with an opportunity to start, the other OL guys that left here in the portal did so because they want to play.

Addison Nichols is the only one that didn't transfer down, but Arkansas likely will struggle to finish above 500 next season. So seems like a weird move for him with our attrition here and his familiarity with the system. He absolutely could have earned a spot here...

Yep. It's a tightrope. You double up Mincey and the rest of the o-line says, "Hey, what about me?!" Soon you're overpaying everybody and throwing money at backups to stay. The strategy is to avoid getting in this position, but we're in it and working our way out isn't as simple as any of us would like it to be.

Organic development is preferred IMO. I get the Lane, Davis, Lampley concern and I share it. Clearly the 22 O-line class is destined for scout team duty (hate that Nichols got fat and stopped competing), but the 23 class has some promise. They're in the building now. Will be there in spring. Bring 'em in-feed 'em, grow 'em, teach 'em. I'm counting on Sham, Lang, and Bussell to contribute this season. If they can piece together a decent O-line with walk-ons who had been with the program for years like they did this season, then I expect CGE can put a better product on the field with better raw talent organically. Then spend the money to retain kids that can play (Campbell, Mayes, Spraggs) and won't be malcontents (Nichols and Mincey, respectively).
But if 23 class doesn't produce then yep, we are in big trouble.

These idiots don't understand one simple but HUGE fact...if they do what others are doing and overpay for decent but not great talent...they will then have to overpay literally everyone on the roster because that is the quickest path to locker room culture hell..

Do the dumbasses not understand the simple truth?...there is a finite amount of resources available...the AD, Heupel and Spyre have chose a path...and that path is not the "go all in stupidly for RiGHT now" path.

We get who we freakin get..🤬 the ones that don't want to be here.
Exactly. Players in the portal are there primarily because they want a payday or they aren't starting at their current school and want to go somewhere they have a chance to start/play. The latter will often move to lower tier schools or schools with lesser talent where they are an upgrade to what is already on the roster. The former will go wherever offers the biggest bag. When they get their, if their bag is big than the bags of the guys that have been there for two or three years, those guys will either leave, demand a bigger bag, or just feel resentment for their new "teammate" who they haven't seen put in the work and effort that they have at their current school. It can be cancerous. It is a fine double edged sword that our coaches are having to walk, but everyone thinks it is as easy as writing a check or promising playing time.

Everything concerns you. Maybe you should take Invol's example and take a break.
