Recruiting Football Talk VII

I can't see this instant hire of Dan Lanning being possible just because of his $20 million buyout at Oregon unless they've been working on this in secret since the day after the Bama playoff exit.

I've got a feeling Lanning says no. Maybe its just wishful thinking. But he's in a great situation. Leaving great situations for another hypothetically "better" situation doesnt always work out like you think. Just ask Lane Kiffin.
I could see pride saying yes and reason saying no. Will be curious to see which wins.

Whoever takes the job will have the unenviable task of following Saban. He’s going to be compared to Saban in everything he does. I know $$$ talks and Alabama is a great job, but I think there is something to be said for being a situation where you aren’t following in the footsteps of the most successful football coach of all time. For that reason, I too think Lanning turns it down.

Lane will be Bama’s next coach imo. I think he ticked off some of the Bama brass in his time as OC there, but I anticipate they will get turned down a time or two and ultimately land on Lane.

If the Bama brass does view Lane as a parasite, though, then maybe Norvell gets a look. He is probably dying to get out of Tallahassee after the playoff snub and with the Noles set to take a big step back next season in all likelihood.

Doesn’t matter who they hire…he is the GOAT. Unless you sign a GOAT-est, they will not be as consistent. Whoever they hire will still recruit well and let’s be honest, they were top 3 every year anyway so no one is recruiting “better”.

Ultimately there are only a few true elites, unforunately GA has one now.

Is anyone here really concerned if Aladambama hires Lanning?
I think he would be a good hire. Would likely keep the talent level high. But im not shaking in my boots about it. I think there's a chance the job overwhelms him a bit and he struggles to win big games. Bammers turn on him slowly cause they are reminded what losing games you shouldnt from time to time feels like.

The outcome of this could be bad for us. But i feel pretty confident it at least won't be Saban-level bad for us. Maybe he's Kirby. But i don't know. I doubt it. Maybe he's Muschamp.

It clearly didn't, by the numbers.

But I'm sure Saban liked buying a few Chargers over managing a multi-million dollar slush fund.

It's a much different playing field in recruiting, and I think they are now starting to slowly come back to the pack. I believe it will be much more obvious after the honeymoon period of the new coach.

You think $20mil is a lot? I think top programs wouldnt battenae at writing a check for double that if they really wanted to hire (or fire) a coach.
