You and me both, Brother. That was just a little before my time...I never really started paying attention until the late late 70s and early 80s watching the Braves, Cubs and Mets on TBS, WGN and WOR.
But then I started checking out a lot of old BB books from the school library...I was one of those guys that got the paper everyday just to read the Sports section and see the day stats.
I remember one play when WP went out into the flat for a little dump pass, no big deal, right? Except, the defender timed it well and was roaring in to blow it all up ... except ... Payton put a spin move to evade the dude ... at the same time as he was catching the too-high pass with one hand. It was incredible. I couldn't believe what I just saw.Walter could do it all. One of the best pass catchers out of the backfield, too...in a time, that wasn't really a thing. That went with his training you talked about...he turned himself into a great receiver, something he really wasn't whenever he broke into the league; but, he worked and worked at it, and whenever he retired, was the all time leader in all purpose yards.
His tenacity, his beastness is unmatched.
I saw Walter Payton, Jim McMahon, Willie Gault, Refrigerator Perry and the rest of the 85 Bears hand the Cowboys a 44-0 beat down in Cowboys stadium back in 1985 when I was living in the Dallas area. Walter was the man! It was fantastic getting to watch one of the greatest NFL teams of all time in person.I use to say he was, too...maybe because I got to see him play; but, a few years back, I watched a doc on Walter, then started digging and watching clips...Sweetness is the greatest football player of all time, no matter the position, imo. That dude was from another planet.
Not taking a single thing away from Sanders...he's #2 RB behind Walter.
Soo... @Weezer...are you still freaking out about the OL? Last 5* OT Elarbee got his hands on went #10 in the draft after having one of the most dominant Tennessee OLman season performances I have ever witnessed.
I will never understand the Willie Martinez phenomenon...he nearly always has guys that become really good wherever he goes...but it's like it takes forever to get them there...it's weird.
I just wish WM would speed the process up a little..lol.Cam and Kamal were both 3*s. I think what's happening is player development. It feels like it takes forever because the raw talent 4 and 5 star DBs bring to the table covers up a lot of the learning process. A lot of times those guys come with splash plays earlier in their careers even if they only do a so-so job overall because they will out talent opponents on occasion. Also he doesn't have a stacked roster so we're seeing the process earlier than we normally would. We're seeing them learn and learn with little or no help nearby.
Lost a good friend (and diehard Cowboys fan) watching that game. We had agreed beforehand that no matter whose team won, we’d keep it classy with no trash…I whelched.I saw Walter Payton, Jim McMahon, Willie Gault, Refrigerator Perry and the rest of the 85 Bears hand the Cowboys a 44-0 beat down in Cowboys stadium back in 1985 when I was living in the Dallas area. For clarification, we watched the game on television back in Red Bank…would’ve loved to witness it in person. Only attended one game in Irving after I moved here in 1995. A Cardinals game.I remember that “just get in the stadium” tickets were going for $400 in the parking lots before that game in 1985.
My family bought tickets to the Bears game, the Giants game and the Redskins game in Irving in 85. It was Joe Theisman’s birthday when the Redskins played in Dallas that year. The fans sang happy birthday every time the Cowboys sacked Theisman that day. It was about 7 or 8 times if I remember correctly. For clarification, we watched the game on television back in Red Bank…would’ve loved to witness it in person. That was a fun genuine rivalry back in the day…pales in current times. Still remember that classic Tom Landry AmEx commercial. My family bought tickets to the Bears game, the Giants game and the Redskins game in Irving in 85. Edit: Just looked it up. They only sacked Theisman once that day. They must have sang every time the defense hit him and every turnover that day. Theisman threw 5 picks, and Dallas won 44-14.
