Are we there yet?
Everything is relative, or so I’ve often heard. From a roster talent perspective it’s how do you compare to the most talented roster in college football?
In 2020 we hit a high water mark for us, at least in recent years, as tracked by the 247 team talent composite published every year at the beginning of the season. 2020 was a better roster on paper than 2015 and 2016.
The thing about relativity is that everything is always changing. Our rosters in 2015 and 2016 ranked higher relative to everyone else but the composition of rosters above us continued to improve and we didn’t so they pulled away even more.
So we started rebuilding the roster in 2019 and 2020 and we were climbing on up then all hell broke loose and we fell into a pit.
It’s been a long hard slog from the depths of that 2021 sinkhole and we still have a long ways to climb. As it stands right now I think our 2024 roster talent as measured by the recruiting industry is likely to be the best roster, highest rated on paper, that we have had in maybe two decades.
I think we could be maybe a top 10-12 roster in 2024 but the really promising thing is that with the 2025 class we have the potential to maybe move into the 900 club. That would likely be a top 7 roster. As GMac said in one of his commitment interviews, we’ve got momentum.
Many thanks to the staff and players for making this happen and especially thanks to all the fans behind the Volunteer Club for helping to fuel that momentum. #GBO.
