DeBoer’s inaugural coaching staff includes:

  • Kane Wommack (defensive coordinator/linebackers)
  • Nick Sheridan (offensive coordinator)
  • Freddie Roach (assistant head coach/defensive line)
  • Maurice Linguist (defensive backs/co-defensive coordinator)
  • Colin Hitschler (defensive backs/co-defensive coordinator)
  • JaMarcus Shephard (wide receivers)
  • Chris Kapilovic (offensive line)
  • Bryan Ellis (tight ends)
  • Robert Gillespie (running backs/assistant head coach)
How do you think their fan base feels about these "big names" ?
I didn't know Gillespie went to the enemy...?

Do we want Iowa State or for Houston to win? I feel like Houston doesn't actually have a very impressive resume, despite only losing 3 games. They played a super easy non-conf. schedule and lost 3 important games: TCU, Iowa State, and Kansas.

Meanwhile, Iowa State beat Kansas, TCU, and Houston. Losses to Baylor (called off buzzer beater), Texas A&M, Virginia Tech, Oklahoma, and BYU.

If Iowa State sweep Houston I think that will automatically kick Houston out of 1 seed contention. But really makes a case for Iowa State to leap frog us. This is ISU's last big game on the schedule (they'll play ranked BYU at home) with most of them at home, meanwhile Houston still plays Baylor on the road, Kansas, and most of the rest of their games on the road.

If Houston wins, Iowa State won't jump us. Houston could still drop another 2-3 games and we could jump them, so maybe we want that (unless it means Kansas will jump us again)

Maybe with our recruiting resources his recruiting will step up. Like I said, looking at 247, his recruiting is nothing soecial.
Again, the only reason he doesn't have a 5* on his recruiting resume is that Louisville made a coaching change. Owens even said he was waiting to see if Sims would be retained by Brohm. When he wasn't, Owens flipped to TAMU. He had the #2 ranked 5* RB committed to Louisville. I think that's a good sign of what he's capable of.

De’Rail Sims –

All indications are he’s an elite RB coach. He’s also been groomed for the big stage being selected for the American Football Coaches Association 35 Under 35 Coaches Leadership Institute and prior to the 2023 season, being selected to participate in the NFL’s Bill Walsh Coaching Fellowship where he worked with Los Angeles Chargers over the summer.

He appears to be pretty young but has been a consistent fielder of very productive running backs, no matter where he has been.

This is arguably his first opportunity on the big stage. Louisville and Cincinnati aren’t in our league and neither is Eastern Carolina, where 6 of the 7 recruits Sims has signed according to 247 landed. He had one signee according to the list posted earlier from 247 while he was at Louisville.

The RB coach is known in the big leagues as a rainmaker. Recruiting is a big part of his to do list so let’s look a bit closer at the history of recruits he has signed according to what a poster shared earlier today.

In 2019 Sims signed an ATH for ECU, Mauney. According to the 247 composite he was the second highest rated recruit in the class for ECU, the top recruit according to 247 Sports. Mauney was the leading rusher for the Pirates as a freshman.

In 2020 he signed three recruits for ECU, a RB, a Dual Threat QB, and an APB. The RB was the 4th highest rated player in the class of 29 signees according to the 247 Composite. He, Harris, went on to win AAC rookie of the year. He was still the leading rusher for ECU last year. The QB, Hudson, was #12 out of 29 and he after being unable to get on the field ended up transferring after three seasons and became a productive wide receiver for James Madison last year. The third signee, Mitchell, an APB, ended up twice with first team all-AAC honors, jumped to the draft after his junior year, was selected in the 4th round by the USFL’s New Orleans team but chose instead to sign an UDFA deal with the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens. His best game last year for the Ravens was 9 carries for 139 yards and a TD against Seattle.

In 2021, still for ECU, Sims signed a RB and a Safety. The RB, McKay, according to the 247 composite was the third highest rated player out of 13 high school signees. He saw very limited action in his first two years then hit the transfer portal after the ’22 season. I couldn’t find where he is now or even if he is still playing. The safety in the class, Temple, was the ninth highest rated player out of 13 and he transferred after one year, moving on to Arkansas State where he saw limited action in ’22 and none in ’23.

In 2022 Sims is credited with signing a RB for Louisville, Turner. Turner was the 9th highest rated player out of 16 high school signees. In both 2022 and 2023 he was the third leading RB for the Cardinals while playing behind upperclassmen.

My initial impression after doing a bit of homework is that this guy fits the Heupel profile for assistant coaches. He’s young, hungry, motivated, very competent on the field, and considering most of his recruiting to date was for a program that ranks around #80 in the recruiting rankings, a pretty good recruiter. I suspect the transition to a top 15 recruiting program will yield similar relative results. jmo.

I think it’s most likely a very good hire. jmo.
This is positive! Keaton Mitchell was his recruit? That guy looked electric for the Ravens this year before going down injured. Optimistic on the talent he is able to bring in here.
