He didn’t start on his high school team. I think his offers were Purdue and WKU. Every coach in the tourney overlooked him except his own, which credit to Painter, but singling out Barnes for that is mega-classless.

Everyone overlooked ZZ except Barnes and the St Peters coach, and look how ZZ handles it.

Edit: does anyone know what he was ranked coming out of high school?
