Recruiting Football Talk VII

Obviously a coach with only one season as a D1 head coach isn’t going to move the needle for some folks, particularly the Kellie defenders. I think there are some things to like about the hire, though. She has an innovative brand of basketball, particularly on offense and has won big at all of her stops. It only took her one season at Marshall to set the school record for wins and got them to the ncaa tournament for the first time since 1997.

Question about her is simple: can she bring in talented players? If she can, good times are ahead. If she can’t, we’ll be coach searching again here in a few years. It’s all going to circle back to getting players. That’s the only way to get back to the upper echelon of women’s hoops.
Well if there was ever an era in womens basketball where you can get some help pulling in players its the nil era. Assume Danny has a plan for pulling money and assistants together.

I’m genuinely curious, LA, and you may not be able to say anything now, either out of respect for the search or just out of lack of information, but did we talk to others and were turned down? Or was Caldwell number 1 from the get go?
Nobody had much info. DW lone wolfed this, and the circle was tight. Check-in calls are always made, but these top names were never coming. They have good setups where they are. This was not a long-term plan. It was in response to late developments impacting recruiting and NIL. I knew DW was going in a different direction and did not expect it to be a name hire-- rather, someone with room to grow. I thought it was someone else until Friday.

There is a meltdown brewing in the LV forum.

Love it! Innovative fast paced offense and full court pressure defense the entire game. Gonna be a lot of fun to watch. Way better than Holly and Pretty Holly basketball.
Like music to my ears, will be nice to actually watch an offensive system and not see players standing around

Caldwell has my full support, but I can’t lie, I am a bit dejected by the hire. Kellie wasn’t the future, that much is obvious and I supported her removal, but she at least had success here. Sure not the expectations we desired, but still successful. This hire feels like a real gamble, and at the crossroads the LV program is in, do we need a gamble? I certainly hope it pays off and thus far, I have no reason to question or support DW and company, so I’ll go along with it, albeit with apathy.
Thank you for saying exactly what I wanted to say. The LV program with its legendary coach is the reason women’s BB is where it is today. After nearly a generation since Pat, I thought we needed to hire similar to Bama when they hired Saban - a sure thing. Caldwell is not a sure thing because she hasn’t coached at this level. But it is done and I will support her because there is definitely potential.

Another "insider" has said Gottlieb was the first target, but USC was willing to match whatever she offered and she didn't want to leave what she had. I still wish we had thrown money at Becky Hammon. But I'm good with giving Caldwell a shot.

Not saying this hire is equivalent but it just felt like the approach was a little John Currie-esque…

I’m in a wait and see approach. I don’t think that her prior “winning” can be assumed to automatically translate to the next biggest stage. Time will tell.

Jon Currie tried to use a Gruden smoke screen to hire Greg Schiano. Nope, not at all.
