Definitely get that. DW hasn’t given me a reason to doubt him. I’m sure he did all his necessary vetting. As @Enki_Amenra said in a previous post, this is a very DW-like hire. Young, innovative, up and comer that has won albeit not at a big or major program. No tourney success but 90% of Marshall’s players are 5’8/5’9. For a school that was really a loser of a program she did extremely well in her 1 year there. We’ll see how it shakes out. Not the “big name” many probably wanted or expected but still could work out.Caldwell has my full support, but I can’t lie, I am a bit dejected by the hire. Kellie wasn’t the future, that much is obvious and I supported her removal, but she at least had success here. Sure not the expectations we desired, but still successful. This hire feels like a real gamble, and at the crossroads the LV program is in, do we need a gamble? I certainly hope it pays off and thus far, I have no reason to question or support DW and company, so I’ll go along with it, albeit with apathy.
There are no guarantees no matter who you pick. Staley, Mulkey and Geno wouldn't come. Everyone else is no guarantee. Just look at Dave Serrano, Shaka Smart and Scott Frost. All were no brainer high profile hires and all failed.Something mustve happened with Kellie. Ultimately she had won 20 games several seasons. One more year wouldnt have killed us. Now you have to hit one someone.
I think this job is bigger than a Marshall hire, personally. If you're gonna spend the money to fire, buyout, and rehire you damn better be willing to go get the best. Otherwise what's the damn point?
I dont care personally, but some do. Just don't get it.
It's a textbook DW hire based on his history as an AD. He likes finding the "next big thing" in coaching and has a great track record doing it.Caldwell has my full support, but I can’t lie, I am a bit dejected by the hire. My worry here is the LV program is a prestigious, high energy job. A lot like the football program, it requires a certain caliber of coach to manage and bring it success. Does a coach with one year of D-1 experience, even with her previous stints and success this year, meet those qualifications? In DW and Plowman I trust, but I’m also left with a bad taste from Pruitt, a man I never thought would be successful. She checks way more boxes than he did, but the lack of experience in a job of this magnitude worries me.Definitely get that. DW hasn’t given me a reason to doubt him. I agree. Like @SoilVol said, its a DW type of hire. Im excited to see what she brings.I like the hire. This could be a bust, but it also could be a Urban Meyer/Nick Saban kind of hire. When Kellie came, she had already been fired by a power 5 school. This lady has done nothing but win.
My only thing with this defense, and again I preference this with she has my fullest support, is that DW has never been an AD at a program the size of TN. So this is his first real test of that theory, as Heupel doesn’t count because he had way more experience prior to the TN job. It's a textbook DW hire based on his history as an AD. He likes finding the "next big thing" in coaching and has a great track record doing it.
He certainly has a plan in place for her staff that will include a top level recruiter and maybe a former head coach at D1 as an assistant (he's done that in the past).
I think the Virginia Tech coach was who we should've gotten, but Kentucky beat us to the punch. Likely because we waited until the 1st to get a discount on the buyout.
