Recruiting Football Talk VII

Never a fan of John Adams or his perceived endgame, but I thought it was a perfectly valid and innocuous question. Her reaction looked edgier because that awkwardly ended the round of questioning and they started breaking down the set and rearranging furniture amid background construction noise. Basillio is prone to drama and overemphasis. He got years out of not cancelling the Oregon and Oklahoma games and the “best staff in America” tagline from Butch. It’s never as serious as our talking heads obsessions.

Anyone listen to the RTI pancakes and bacon pod? I don’t generally based on how annoying reed bacon is, but once or twice a year during spring and again I think during fall they get to sit in an entire practice, whereas traditional media only gets 15 minutes. And then they do a pod and talk about what they saw.

They just published the spring one. It’s about 90 minutes long so I only heard the approximately the first half on my drive to work today.

Ignoring everything bacon said, here are some things Kerbyson shared that I found noteworthy:

  • Sounds like the Okoye at tight end experiment might be over. He’s still listed as a tight end on the roster but was practicing at end. KK said physically he looks like a dude but every play they had a coach tell him what to do and he would do it. He was always looking to the sideline for instruction. So clearly still very raw.
  • Lance Heard looks great in pass pro but needs work in the run game. Keeps his hands outside and he’s chest too open. Not using any of his natural gifts when he does that. Said that can easily be fixed.
  • Umarov looks like a guard physically.
  • Duncan working at tackle which we knew. Said he has the build for it. Looks like a tackle.
  • Satterwhite at center and very technical. Looks the part and impressive as a freshman.
  • Dylan Samson got compared to AK in how he can get hit but it doesn’t affect him, how he can just brush it off and keep going despite being smaller.
  • Desean Bishop got rave reviews. Said he did great on the second play in teams - Stayed in to block but no one came his side so he went out for a pass, ball was kind of behind him but he made a great catch, juked someone cold and then ran up field and trucked Telander. Also said he did great staying in the pocket and picking up a blitz later. KK referred to him as a walk on but I thought he was on scholarship.

That was it. Started talking about tight ends but nothing of note was mentioned. I’ll listen to the rest later and share anything interesting if no one else has yet. But it’s a good pod to check out if you’re bored or need your Vols football fix.

Second half notes:

  • }KK said its obvious Nico and Ethan Davis have a connection. Emphasized obvious. Said he'd be a go to guy.
  • Generic talk on the receivers based on what they saw last year. Didn't really discuss anything from the practice.

Regarding the DL, a coach, who Reed alluded to with a dozen clues, was Robert Ayers, gave the following nuggets
  • DL referred to as "nasty." Said they were dominant. To take it with a grain of salt somewhat because some Olineman are out, but they are killing it.
  • Raved about Jaxson Moi.
  • Nathan Robinson is at 6'6" 288lbs, has moved inside, and "has been doing some things. Impressive."
  • Daeven Hobbs has the potential to be one of the greatest Dlineman to come through Tennessee.
  • KK said the DL was gonna be game wreckers. We have guys and we have depth. KK was "shocked" seeing them in person.

Re linebacker

  • Lineabcker seems light. KK said he looks at them and thinks it'll be easy to throw them around.
  • KK isn't seeing what he wants to see out of Caleb Herring. Not seeing burst or explosion or working his hands. Not there yet.
  • Chadavian Bradley is "thin thin" and doesn't have elite athleticism. Needs to either gain weight or become mroe athletic. As a former tackle, KK wouldn't be afraid of Bradley at all.
  • Jalen Smith seems small.
  • Doesn't want to rip on the linebackers but to be fair he admits he didn't get to see the starters.

Re: DB's

  • There was a tackling drill - every time Boo Carter went, he made the tackle, which was really impressive for a defender to do since the drill is mostly designed for offense.
  • Had good size in the secondary.
  • Jermod McCoy - covered Donte really well. Shifts his hips well, and can stay on a route.
  • Reed Bacon, in true professional form, interjects with how he's been farting like crazy during the podcast.
  • 1s looked to be Jermod McCoy, Andre Turrentine, Ricky Gibson, Jordan Thomas (star), Jakobi Thomas. KK mentioned how good Jordan Thomas looked at star.
  • All the freshman look good, size wise. Look as good as the guys who have been in the program for a while.

Thats it....

From what I can tell, Basilio is just giving Adams a hard time because he’s a regular guest.

Hoping Jordan Matthews can turn it on in the secondary at some point...I know he was pretty well regarded as a recruit.
