Recruiting Football Talk VIII

No. Mebbe they’re used to it. Remember when ours was horrendous for a stretch under Butch? But our RBs slipping and whatever happened to Squirrel on that fielding punt was obviously horrid.
I'm glad they were good fans to talk with. They have a good reputation. I hate the Okies, but I don't that means their fans are not solid. 😂 (And actually I hate everyone but us.) Really wish I could have been there. Happy for you. Bet the tailgaiting was good, too. Did you see the lockerroom video of the team giving Heup the game ball? (I see that it was posted just above my post.)

It's always even more satisfying to beat a team with a long tradition. That's for sure.

I posted this in the game thread about J. McCoy and want others to see it. Huge play.

Jermod McCoy made one of the smartest football plays I have ever seen on that offsides. He saw the DR (I think Pearce) jump into the neutral zone and immediately extended his arms and used both hands to make contact with the OK receiver as the ball was snapped to cause the whistle and keep OK from having a free play to take a shot. Watch the play if you get a chance.

Phenomenal awareness....McCoy is a HUGE addition and is a future NFL CB. His timing on coverage hits to separate the ball is elite, he has great speed and physicality and incredible instincts and football IQ. Best DB we have had in a long time

Thoughts on the game:

1) It has to be said, the refs were atrocious. I know some hate to hear it, but the zebras obviously slanted the Sooners' way. Seemed like we could just look at them wrong and draw a flag. Meanwhile, I saw missed holding calls where they were grabbing our DL, I saw an uncalled facemask on Bishop, and I saw an uncalled PI on the Sooners. We got very few calls. I don't want preferential treatment, but goodness, call the game the same both ways.

2) Our defense is good. I mean really good. It makes me happy. DL and LBs are obviously the strength of our D, but our secondary doesn't suck. I'm on the verge of taking back every bad thing I've ever said about Willie Mo.

3) Our offense still has a ways to go. Nico has to protect the ball better. We need to get our OL healthy. When Campbell went out, you could see we were in trouble. It still bothers me that Elarbee has no one ready to fill the void. I see it as a failure in coaching, but I'm sure someone will get offended on his behalf over that remark. Compare our DL depth to our OL depth, and you will see a vast difference. Garner has his guys ready. Elarbee has the starters ready, but that's about it.

4) Heupel never really went for the kill. We won, and ultimately, that's all that matters, but I was hoping for more trickery and scoring. Is he saving it for Bama and Georgia? Was he taking it easy on his alma mater? There just weren't as many of the dynamic plays he has spoiled us with. But again, we won, and that's all that really matters.
our oline and Elarbee will be fine. Elarbee is very very good. No oline men in the 2021 class, no contribution in the 2022 class. With the recruitment of Oline men improving we will be able to tell a huge difference just like for the dline

Garner walked into a much better situationwith Dominic Bailey, Simmons, big O, Baron, Eason, Byron Young. Half of which are super seniors. That’s a lot of talent and depth. Oline sadly wasn’t that fortunate

The amount of lost footing in this game was very high. Squirrel slipped almost every time he touched the ball. Sampson slipped. Turrentine slipped. It was constantly happening. Seemed worse than the 2022 SCAR game
This is 100% a player safety issue. Sankey best do his job and make them fix it.

Jermod McCoy deserves the player of the game. Great play all around. Even when the one downfield pass was overthrown, McCoy woulda been there to defend it. Totally shut down half the passing game.

We’ve got stars at all three levels of the defense.

I watched Okie last week and the field was terrible, but sandy. I think by the looks of things they may have re-sodded the whole field this week. That made it even worse this week, but I guess it was the right thing to do long term. I have no idea how long it takes sod to become stable.

Yes almost guaranteed they re sodded this week to turn it around from last week. Atrocious conditions before it set in clearly

McCoy seems like he has it all. Instincts to play the ball and can hit. Might end up being the best db we’ve had since the GOAT EB14. Also can play man and zone.

A few ATROCIOUS calls by the refs gravely affected the score.

1. The fumble recovery TD that was ruled an incomplete pass and led to 2nd oklahoma TD
2. the 50 yd pass to Thornton (down at the 8) that was called back due to a phantom holding
3. Missed pass interference on the 30yd throw to Bru that would've taken us down to the 22, for at least a FG.

that's a 23 point swing...maybe 27

Would've made it 42-9 (or 46-9).

Squirrels dropped pass may have ended up with us scoring a TD instead of a FG...

so then it's 46-9 or 50-9...

IMHO, that's a much more appropriate score for the game that we just dominated on D. Even despite the conservative playcalling and complete tomfoolery by the refs. And that trash field and being down a couple OL.
