Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Boy folks are selling Nico stock quick. Lol I say roll the bones play like you have nothing to lose and if he falls short he falls short. He ran like crazy against Iowa.

If he continues to struggle in this limited format they have to turn him loose and live with the mistakes. Will pay off next year.

I don’t think there’s an anti-UT deep state. (Look who had the most penalties called against opponents in 2022). And I also think that what’s frustrating to fans is not the total number of fouls but rather the flags that weren’t thrown at some critical or noticeable moment. But it’s interesting to see that many ranked teams have fewer penalties called against their opponents on average.

A real analysis would have to control for total plays and compare against expected rates for all three phases of play. I don’t have that data.
For my money it is not really about the number of penalties that is really important it is the timing, the penalties not called, and the games that we get a ton of penalties. Funny, for three games this season we have a reasonable amount of penalties and penalty yard. The las two games 10 penalties each for massive yardage. It is statistically impossible.

So the refs love.... Auburn?

Last year Ohio state, Texas, and Notre Dame were all lower than us.... Hard to imagine it's a conspiracy against us if opponents of those teams were getting fewer flags than our opponents.
That's not the way to look at. It's when the flags get thrown that matters. Looking at "penalties only" is not accurate of what's happening. That's not why VOL fans, like me, don't trust the officials and think the league is corrupt. It's the timing of when the flags get thrown.

Examples:
If we're on offense, the live ball flags will come out after we have a long run/pass, convert a 3rd down, or score. Holding and ineligible player down field, are the ones called the most against us. Pass interference against our opponent is rarely called.

If we're on defense, the SEC referees refuse to call holding against our opponents (either on the LOS or the DBs) and rarely call offensive pass interference for push offs.

This weekend and especially against bama/georgia, pay attention to when the flags should get thrown and when they do/don't get thrown. The timing/situation/score are the keys to what's got me questioning the refreees agenda.

Against Arkansas it was 10 penalties for 60 yards. How is 60 yards massive yardage.

Arkansas had 6 penalties for 45 yards not a very big discrepancy in yardage between the teams.

As far a missed calls go it happens for both teams not just one sided but I know everyone thinks it is.

I will totally agree officiating is horrible 100% but I will never agree that it's only a conspiracy against Tennessee because it's not.

I felt all of it. The cemetery is perfect. I started at the American cemetery, then Omaha Beach, then an area where you can still access the German bunkers and tunnels. Was dark, cold, and sad. I took some sand with me. I could not help but look up at the cliffs and imagine mortar and machine gun firing down from those cliffs. I could not imagine how the Germans felt when the fog lifted and they could see wave after wave of boats coming to land. Just death and heroism everywhere. We were a different nation then.
Those are places I want to go
How were they
Amazing I assume
Could you feel the power of scenery
WW2 is my fav war history bc my great grandfather was in it and just that fact and knowing what he did draws me to that war
Those guys fighting in that was were unbelievably brave

I do think bad officials are scared to throw the flag against the home team on a big play. But I don't think they're conspiring against us. They're just bad at their jobs.

On the penalties discussion there is an apparent bias against Tennessee that is anecdotal, but also with some statistical backing.

One live ball penalty called on our opponents in the last 2 road games.

One.

That is more than just bad at their jobs, IMO.

OK, Volnation. It's time to take a 'Beaches of Normandy' tour.
