Recruiting Football Talk VIII

For all the issues many of you have with specific positional concerns, recruiting, coaching etc... Last night's game really only boils down to a few plays in the first half.

And the line of demarcation was Thornton's drop, followed by the false start and punt. We had all the momentum, and I believe if we got that first down, kept that drive going... Well, if nothing else, UGA doesn't get the ball with momentum swinging in their direction... And maybe takes a possession away from them in the first half, limiting their scoring opportunities. Instead, they score 14 points after that.

Everything after that sequence... Penalties, mistakes... Etc... But that's where the game turned.

So what do I take away from last night? When you have an opportunity to make a play, make it. And fix the mistakes. We're perfectly capable of playing with that team when we played clean.

You do have to credit UGA. They were clearly prepared, corrected many of the issues they were having and made better adjustments than we did. But they were on their heels prior to that sequence.... And that was an opportunity we missed, probably the biggest one of the game, because of what happened after.

Banks does not adjust during games. He never has and looks like he never will.

Offense is regressing and something needs to change, someone else needs to call plays, WR's need an overhaul because at this point in the season they are still dropping game changing passes... multiple per game. Oline depth--- yuck.

We are not a SEC playoff team. I say that because we could beat 3-4 non-conference teams that were ahead of us in the polls before last night and I still think we could beat them.

Unless something really crazy happens, they will force bama in over us. Just go ahead and prepare for it. We'd have to beat Vandy by +21 and bama struggle against Auburn to even consider it.

So possibility of 10-2, what bowl are we going to and who will we play? Really crazy that if we'd have just taken care of business against Arky, we'd still be in, and watching the chaos unfold around us.

If we have to settle for a ****** bowl game, then give me Colorado so we can destroy Sanders

took last nights loss pretty hard.

I mean, uga is as vulnerable as they’ve ever been. They’re not that good. Top 3 backs missing. Top 3 receivers missing. Mash unit OL.

And they dominated us post first quarter.

It’s the kind of game that really makes me wonder if we’ll ever be elite again.

And I love me some Heupel, but I’m seriously doubting his system can win in the SEC.
While I agree about being dominated I also think it shows how far behind we actually are in recruiting
We have 1 good LB
We have 2-3 good corners
One decent safety that plays hard but is slow and number 2 who can’t hit hard
Number 23 is good but he’s a true freshman
Our dline has 1 stud DE
DTs are veterans but not as talented as UGA younger players

Oline has a good C and a good LT but the veteran Gs are what they are but compared to other younger players at the same positions are backups
Our RT position is serviceable at best with both guys who play there being backups at best on a good sec line

Portal changes that.

Need some good OL. Heard will be better. Need 2 really solid OL transfers. OL is atrocious this year in pass pro, so transfers can't be much worse.

Peyton Lewis looks good.

DL is the only unit that will definitely be worse.
How about developing the OL guys Tennessee has recruited over the last 2 seasons? Instead of having to look for mercenaries in the Portal every freaking season.

Secondary will likely be the strength of the defense next year. DLine will be solid but will def be a drop off from this year.

I would give my left rib to have Cade and Darnell again on the OLine. Will need to have NIL ready for some portal OLine players.

It’s hilarious that we say “well UGA was more talented blah blah blah” and then when it comes to recruiting we’re like “hell yeah, rankings don’t matter”

Which is it because I’m confused? Lol
I think Rankings matter 100% and then see who they have committable offers from

This years class is the best CJH has had and that’s good bc he’s getting better sec quality guys each cycle

Yah. We can get in if certain bolts drop into the correct slots. I want to be in the playoff. I want to win it all. But I'm carrying some context into the conversation.

If you'd told me four years ago this is where we'd be, having competed to get into the playoff two of the four years, but still not *quite* there, I'd have paid double for the unexpected blessing.

It's happening. It's coming. We just need patience. The "Heupel created this untenable, screeching, swelled-brain logic by outperforming expectations, so all this stupid BS is on him" argument is absolute blank-stare, drool-chinned stupidity from what we've been assuming are functional adults.
The only good thing about this loss is that it really exposed all of our weaknesses to our big money people.
They can see that we are not THAT FAR away from beating the top echelon teams.
But will we open our wallets (like Ole Miss people did) and go buy what is needed in the portal to enhance another good recruiting class?

What's wild is Brazzell had no trouble torching defenses at Tulane, even against better opponents, but he's basically a warm body right now. The rest of the group were unproven at their prior stops but had immense potential.

Our passing game last night was a 160lb 5'9" guy getting open and a TE mismatching LBs. Then designed quick passes to the flat and curl routes off cushions.

I love Bru, but he's lost a step and not getting open downfield. That's why he hasn't scored, because he's not consistently getting open. I think Brazzell's inability to produce is probably coaching and lack of physicality. Thornton unfortunately has had injuries. Nimrod has a horrible drop rate.

We have insane talent in that room and they aren't producing or they aren't seeing the field. It's November, Staley and Matthews should be playing. If they're still behind what we are currently seeing then that's probably position group coaching. I hate throwing coaches under the bus but our WRs have been subpar since Hyatt and Tillman went to the league despite having more depth and talent.
I agree somewhat, but our guys are regularly open downfield on go/fly/fade routes, Nico just can't hit them very often. Bru has been open plenty, Nico just doesn't see him or misses him.

I think our WR coach is the #1 must go coach though. The drops are insane. Running routes to the same spot as another wr over and over is unacceptable. The blocking is average but not great. But Nico is partnofbthe problem too.

Even there, we should still be really good at both DE spots. Need to add a couple DTs in the portal.

Arky was a wake up call in a sense though. If we beat Arky, do we then drop a game to FLA or Bama?

As a Team and especially on Offense we have to play clean. The defense this year makes silly mistakes at inopportune times and they have the ability more times than not to get off the field, the offense is the opposite. I have noticed over the past couple of years a penalty, a dropped catchable ball or a misread leads to a punt almost automatically. Most teams have some trouble in that department but it seems to be a real problem for us. I'm not sure why that is but watch in the next game and see what you think.

Lewis gonna be elite, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Sampson returns

Finding a replacement for Mays will be the hardest part

Dline will be worse but the drop off won’t be as much as people think imo. Interior will lose a lot of depth. Pass rush will be fine with Ross, Josephs, herring

Transfer Portal:
1 RB
1 WR
2 OL
1 DL, if he’s good, 2 if just depth pieces...,Josephs, West, Jenkins, Hobbs and Moi can hold down the fort. Eason can come back as well.

1 LB: not as down on them as some, Telander and Carter** are probably the starters till they graduate, but we could use immediate contributing depth better than Perry and Smith
(Where’s Spillman?)

2 Safeties

Our defense needs to find a couple of LBs like Pili.

I'm pissy too............Wild how expectations change so quickly.

It's amazing we are all pissed today.............and rightfully so ............ UT is 8-2.
Never would have dreamed that in 2020.........
Prepare yourself for people to bitch and moan all spring and summer over the baseball team fresh off a national championship and one of the best seasons of all time.

11 points is in the coaches poll.

It’s about right. I still think they have some fraudulent teams in front of us.

I think we are 13-14 in the AP and CFP
