Or the d line doesn’t get pressure so secondary doesn’t hold up. Defense is very team orientedI’ve never liked WM, he’s a decent recruiter but can’t develop the talent or coach in game. All of our losses under Heupel have a recurring theme: the secondary did not hold up. Uscjr, Mizzou, Purdue, florida ‘21 and ‘23, our secondary folded and did not perform well at all.
plus he wasn’t a straight running back in High School…. amazing athlete but needed to really learn the position. We had three of the top 10 RB's in the SEC in YPC. Who exactly was Seldon going to supplant? That is not a knock on Seldon, either. I think he is a monster in the making. I just don't see how you sit a highly productive upperclassman that has shown he can produce for a talented underclassman that is still learning the college level game. I think you are living in counter factual land.
NoIf Seldon gets more carries, Sampson probably isn’t on the team this year. Seldon would either be taking Sampson’s carries or taking Small’s snaps ahead of Sampson. Either way, Sampson would be gone IMO. Nearly happened anyway.
JMO, CJH has relied on vets because he wants to win and thinks that was the most likely way to get there given our depth and talent limitations over the past few years.
I imagine he’s also trying to build a culture of competition and trust where you have to earn your gameday PT every day in practice. That’s always tough for younger guys who are learning and adjusting to college ball.
