Recruiting Football Talk VIII

H2H didn't matter when Bama stayed ahead of us right up until OU blew them out...

I don't like Beamer or South Carolina, but they've got the best 3 losses of any 3 loss team in the discussion.

Losing by 3 to 16th ranked LSU
Blown out by 12th ranked Ole Miss
Losing by 2 at 7th ranked Bama
H2H would no longer matter if Clemson beat South Carolina and Vandy beat us.

this moron being the chair of the committee when his own institution is fresh off a massive cheating scandal within the schools biggest program is just a ****in joke. Might as well go to 7 game conf schedule then and the rest should be cupcakes.
One way to fix it is

All conferences have 8 game schedule
So 8 games

Then each power 4 conferences have to play one opponent each year from each conference. Top 8 teams can only draw from top 8 teams of other conferences and bottom 8 do the same
That’s 3 more games bringing the total to 11

Then play 2 non power four conference games
That’s 13 regular season games

Move the FCs opponents to the spring game
Guarantee neyland would sell out for a spring game and then coaches can rest starters and anyone that gets hurt has a greater time to get better before the regular season or coaches can play backups and get guys experience

Would make for some really good games out of conference
I don’t know if my idea is good but it seems way too simple for the ncaa to figure out

Honestly I think conference title games will be phased out.

If the Power 4 are basically guaranteed a spot and then the Group of 5 is as well why play the extra game?

SEC Champ without title game (as of today) would be Texas
BIG 10 Champ would be Oregon
Big 12 would be Arizona State
ACC would be Miami
Mountain West would be Boise State
American would be Army

Would be fine with all 6 of those teams getting in personally. The biggest problem though is the size of the Power 4 conferences is now allow teams like Penn State, Indiana, SMU, and even Texas to get around playing most the top teams in conference in the regular season.

Beat UF 2 times
Beat Bama 2 times
Finished the season in the top10 2 times**
Rolled Clem's Son in the Orange Bowl
Smoked Iowa's defense 35-0
In the playoffs in year 4**
Landed our first 5* QB in decades
Have multiple 4/5* QB commits
. . .

This list goes on and on. I don't understand how it goes so long. Must have the super-powers, I read it for 225 thousand hours. . .

**assuming we beat Vanderbilt.

This is far beyond what I thought we'd see in the first 4 seasons with Heupel. Is this the best 4 year stretch under a new coach for UT? I'd argue yes, as far back as I can remember. Fulmer did great, but I think what Heupel has done is probably more impressive, considering what each coach walked into.

Is this the best turnaround in the entire country? It's definitely in the the top5 over the past 15 years that I can think of and I can't think of a better one at a major program. This would be similar to Nebraska doing the same thing over the next 4 years, except we may have been in worse shape than them when Heupel started.

We get into the playoffs and I think we can make some noise this year.

A lot of the credit has to go to the VOLS letters. . . anyway, getting into the playoffs is a huge deal, regardless of what happens when we get there. It sets a standard of expectations and shows the entire program what it takes to make it. It's also huge for our following teams, knowing what to expect once you get there.

If not this year, I think we win one in the next few years.

We really need to beat the dog-piss out of Vandy. It reminds me of John Ward saying, "Everything. Everything, is riding on this football game. . ."

I was thinking on this championship committee, and I've come to this conclusion. The committee wants to give everyone a trophy mindset so to speak. They are not taking the best twelve teams, but are choosing between other conferences, giving them a chance. I wish they would go to the top twelve, which would eliminate some of these teams that doesn't play hard competition, like Indiana for example.

i think this year is one of those years where you have some abnormality on the participants in the SEC title game. we're kind of conditioned at this point to see that game as a play in game to the 4 team playoff, so seeing a 9-3 aTm team in there to potentially steal a bid is...odd...and if they do get in and lose, they're out. you can't put a 4 loss runner up over a bunch of other teams that you've already said are in and worthy of being in.....for aTm, the opportunity the SEC titel game presents is the same opportunity that MEAC conf tourney champ gets to play in the NCAA tournament...but, you have to win it to get in.

scenarios...
UGA wins out, top 4

if TX is their opponent, obviously, no one will have an issue with them being in the top 4 if they win.

both of those teams are already solidly in the field and a loss in ATL doesn't move them out of the field.

But if TX loses, they have to drop because UGA replaces them.

If UGA loses...well, they're not going anywhere because they did beat TX in Austin earlier, quite handily. so they're 1-1 against the SEC champ. if it's competitive, they probably don't move at all unless something else happens ahead of them...if TX beats them pretty good, i could see the committee going back and looking at the Ole MIss, Bama, and UK games combined with a convincing loss in ATL and dropping UGA a spot or 2.

Either way, reality is, we don't know how they're going to react to championship weekend.....and how the games play out will matter. but if it's TX/UGA part 2, they're both in, regardless.

on the other side of the fence is if aTm is UGA's opponent....TX has to drop....and that's when their resume will finally be looked at. they're not going to be put out of the field either tho.

if aTm wins in ATL.............TX and UGA drop. what do you do with TN, do they get dropped for doing nothing? somebody is getting bumped out though, aTm would be a bid stealer....i would think the ACC runner up...but the possibility exists that with both TX and UGA dropping back a bit.....do they move us back with them, for doing nothing? allowing aTm to potentially steal our spot?

i don't even like thinking about that...but that's out there. especially if SMU and Miami win this weekend and play a competitive game in Charlotte....

for those reasons...........we need SOME chaos, but not too much. i'd like a home game.... i'd like to see one of the following this weekend: USC beat ND or Syracuse beat Miami or whoever SMU plays to win. i think i'd prefer USCe to beat Clemson too, i just think there's too much that needs to happen for any of the 3 loss SEC teams to get in...but Clemson would go away with a loss there.

and i think it's just in our best interest that TX handle aTm and just remove them from consideration all together.

just for fun, it would be cool if Auburn could win this weekend too.

oh, and all of this is under the premise that we do go ahead and take care of business Saturday.....not putting the cart before the horse.

the title games aren't going anywhere....all the conferences want them....too much money to be left on the table...

don't get it twisted...none of this post season stuff is about competitive balance. it's bout how to make the most money.

Not sure on the competitive balance thing…especially if they try to match sec teams up in the first round which is ridiculous in my mind. To be determined on that…

I have turf from Neyland

Right now I think the field is pretty weak and I’m ok with it. If all of the favorites win (and Georgia takes SEC) we would have a road game against maybe Texas. If there is chaos, we might see Bama/Ole Miss/Clemson get in over Miami/SMU//ND. I’d love to have a game in Neyland but that would probably require a lot of weak teams losing and drop out of the field.

I think, and this shouldn't be controversial, if your football program was involved in one of the biggest cheating scandals of all time you should not be in charge of the brand new playoff committee THE NEXT YEAR

Personally, I think you should be banished to a small island in the pacific, but if not that, you definitely shouldn't be in college athletics anymore and especially not in charge of who gets to play for the championship
