Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Smokey123 and mr.checkerboards fahring Heupel 2 or 3 plays into the game. And then a boatload of basketweavers jump on board. Glad I skipped this forum during the game.

I changed my mind and will not read the game commentary even after games. Sick of it.
Wasn’t with firing Heupel, but there probably needs to be a staff change or two under him that moves the program more into elite status. Most would probably agree with that take as well on here. Heupel is fine though only reason he’d get fired would be because road performances and not ever getting over Georgia/championship issues.

Looking forward to the coming week, we've got the early signing period starting on Wednesday. Biggest question of the week, will David Sanders honor his commitment to Tennessee? I sure as hell hope so. Other questions, will any of our current commitments flip to other teams? TOS has suggested that DL Darrion Smith will flip to Auburn. Haven't heard anything about anyone else (other than Sanders). So who might we add? DL Isaiah Campbell is set to announce on Wednesday. It's between us and UNC, and considering UNC just fired their HC, that should bode well for us. And we're also trying to flip LB Jadon Perlotte from USC and S Timothy Merritt from Miami. Those are really the only names I've heard mentioned, but it would be nice if they surprised us with the flip of a highly rated OL. But I don't expect that to happen.

The transfer portal opens on Monday, December 9th, and remains open until December 28th. My guess is we'll look for some OL and DL help in the portal. Maybe we look at WR based on who enters, but we seem set at most other positions. I suppose it's possible we look at adding a TE for depth purposes as Kitselman is graduating, but it's not really a "need". Probably the biggest question with the portal is if we have any guys who are unhappy and decide to jump in. I'd expect at least a few guys buried on the depth chart might go, but hopefully no big names jump in. Still unsure what the roster limit for next season. Is it 85 or 105? Either way, we have to be two under the number while we're still on probation.
When does this probation crap end? Gotta be soon. This is year freaking 4 post Pruitt.

Ehhh.. the man was born on 3rd base. Posted this chart below last year. ELO rating tracks a programs rating in a rolling 3 or 4 year period. Think of it like a recent success statistic. Since 2015, only a handful of HCs inherited a team that had similar ELO rating to OSU and not a single other HC had the roster talent that Day inherited. He was set up for success Day 1 to a degree that no other coach in the last decade has been.. and still:

No National Championship
1-4 against Michigan
All while OSU had to watch Michigan win a NC before them.

I was wondering why Deboer wasn't on that list near Day, then saw it was from 2023.

Miami is out. They have 0 quality wins and 2 bad losses. I hate Bama and personally think USCjr deserves it over them, but recency bias and the committee’s love affair with Alabama means it’s them.
I don’t see how Bama is in losing to 2 6-6 teams. Getting hammered by a very bad Oklahoma team should keep them out.

We should never, ever lord over Andy.

A) They wake up everyday, and they're Vandy, they've suffered enough.
B) Legitimately, many of these kids knew of or knew each other in HS. They're all Tennesseans.
C) it's classless
If they’d done it yesterday, it would have the same effect as planting it in Neyland…that was a home game. 😏

I don’t know if it will play out this way but I don’t think anyone losing their conference championship game will move at all.
What if Texas beats Georgia by 14+? I wonder if they would drop Georgia below us at least. Probably not. I understand what you are saying…pretty much the rankings/seedings will be almost identical to what is released Tuesday unless there is an upset in a championship game that gets someone in who is on the outside in the next rankings.

One of, if not the worst loss of the season was OSU getting beat at home after being favored by 20-23 points. That should be all of the media’s talking point this morning.

Idgas if it was a rivalry game.
We always knew ESPN and CFP are BG100 slanted. So, this isnt surprising. Wish it weren't but it is

Some ppl aren't convinced we have a home game even though OSU and Miami lost

I mean...would the committee really keep OSU ahead of us after that debacle?
Big 10 bias is a real thing and when it comes to OSU it’s absolutely real. Same goes for the stupid Alabama tater diggers and the SEC. How they rank us versus OSU this week will be a big tell. Hopefully we are 6 and they are 7 but I don’t think anyone would be surprised if they reverse the order. Remember 2 weeks ago 4 of the top 5 teams were from the Big 10 which is ridiculous.

I know some were griping at the beginning of the Vandy game, I didn't get on here, but overall our fans are loyal. I watched Georgia fans filing out against Georgia Tech, and 20 percent Vandy audience for Vandy/Vols in their stadium. Those were huge games.
People still calling out all the griping yesterday?

Weird as ****.

Scouted Vandy.

Their advantages:
Better Kicker and Punter.
They don't turn it over.
They don't beat themselves with penalties.
They are a well-coached team that is very opportunistic. Opposing teams have a habit of turning it over in their own territory (Vandy almost always capitalizes with TD's). Teams inexplicably miss easy field goals against them. Teams get overly ambitious against them and go for it on 4th down even in their own territory. This leads to points for Vandy.

Our advantages:
Overall talent and speed.
Boo Carter in the return game.
Jermod McCoy can neutralize their top WR.
Our TE's should be targeted early and often. Their best defender is their STAR, and they blitz a lot.
D. Sampson. No one stops him.
The deep ball will be there. If we hit two, we could blow them out.

Vandy has won every game they won the Turnover battle. This is the biggest factor of the game. They need teams to make mistakes (turnovers, missed FG's, Downs, penalties). Based on our season, we will commit penalties and turn it over at least once. Provided we respect them and take the points they give, we should be fine. If we force things, it will be a 60-minute game.
Well, not as accurate as my Bama scouting but not too shabby. Boo was neutralized by their exceptional punter. McCoy make one of the best INT's of the year otherwise we wouldn't have turned them over. We were the first team that beat them despite losing the turnover battle. We absolutely dominated them on both lines of scrimmage. We bullied them all game. Again, this should've been worse. Once we stop beating ourselves, we will win games convincingly.

I could see an edge, 2 DL, and 2-3 OL. I don't think we pursue a LB. I could be wrong, but that would make the LB room extremely crowded. Maybe if a couple of bodies transfer out from the room? JMO, but unless we lose guys, I think coaches are happy with LB and the secondary. I know people keep talking about WRs as well, but unless it's just some stud WR, it wouldn't surprise me if coaches are happy with who they have. Feel the same about RB. I think we definitely need OL help. And as I said previously, I could see them looking at TEs for depth, but not really sure it's a "need". Both lines are where the help will be really needed.

Pleaseeeeee lord let it be anyone other than Barion Brown

I'm still thinking a big UGA loss in Atlanta is easiest path. Or maybe PSU getting steamrolled. Hey, maybe we get boosted ahead this week, but I doubt it personally. I think we could deserve to be ahead of OSU, but I have to see it to believe it lol

My seeding guess what the committee will do this week is:

1) Oregon
2) Texas
3) SMU
4) Boise St
5) ND
6) PSU
7) OSU
8) UGA
9) TN
10) Miami
11) Indiana
12) Arizona St
Georgia dropped from 2 to 10 when they took their 2nd loss on the road to a highly ranked Ole Miss. There is no doubt this is heavily slanted to the Big 10 if OSU doesn’t fall that far as well with a much worse loss to an inferior team at home.

Their strengths are our weaknesses. TE, stretching the field, and mobile QB. Always hear speed and talent are our +. Makes me nervous how we play in big games.

That said, we dont lose to Andy.

I was honestly shocked how convincingly we won after the start. My BVS hit warp speed twice in this game. When they stuffed us on 4th down and after Nico's pick. I was sure we were going to be in for a possible disappointment after that. Luckily this team is better than my nerve. The turning point for me was when we stuffed them back on their 4th down near mid-field. That was when I thought we would win. But the dominance (post being down two scores at two separate times) surprised me for two reasons. 1) Because Vandy is a solid team. 2) We have not seen it since Heupel took over.
