Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Mark in Columbus is a great Basilio caller. He just said that if we play at Ohio State we have a great shot at winning. Apparently things are very toxic there right now. Fans are implying that Day should commit suicide like his father. Very bad. If we go up there and strike hard first the Buckeyes will quit. Their fans want to sell tickets to opposing fans so that Day will lose and get fired.

Or maybe we host them in Neyland and crush them anyway.

I didn't realize this but on the long throw to Thorton for the TD, Nico had Mathews wide the heck open at the top. Only a two man route against 4 DBs and the two DBs on that side both came crashing in for whatever reason. Nico never looked at him.

Anyone else notice this?

He also missed squirrel early for 6 up the middle, but we ended up scoring on that drive too.

I mean... you can see in this still shot that a Vandy lineman broke through. Thorton was probably primary look while Matthews was meant to pull the safety and he didn't have time to go through progression due to pressure. Just a guess.

I just read that ESPN thinks we should be ranked lower than OSU. I agree, we got beat by USCjr in 2022, and even though we had beaten Bama and LSU (at home) they put both of them above us? Am I remember this correctly?
Uh yes. That did happen. And we lost hooker.

So before FSU got jobbed because of injury, we did.

True, but two concerns:

1. Volume. UT runs its primary back a lot. I don’t think UGA has had a back with Sampson’s number of carries in 10 years. Not even NFL primary backs like Chubb, Michel, or Swift. A lot of RBs want to strike a balance between showing their skills and limiting their carries. Sampson is crushing it in raw terms, but his per carry numbers aren’t as impressive compared to other top level SEC backs like Hunter and Sanders this year.

2. Scheme. The unique spacing aspects of the offense aren’t something the NFL does much of. While RBs love putting up the stats, there has to be a concern that the concepts do not translate.

Tennessee has no trouble getting top level RBs. Sampson is top tier in the SEC this year and I think there are studs behind him.
Before this year, this staff has split carries among our RB’s. Jaylin Wright could have gotten more, but they played Small and Sampson. Wright is also showing that a UT RB can excel in the pros, even with limited carries.

Well if fans are saying Day should commit suicide like his father, they need the freaking hell beat out of them with a metal pipe.

That's stupid **** to say.

Eh.. Agree, except if SMU should lose too Clemson... That's an 11 win team that beat out Miami for the opportunity to play in Charlotte. If SMU gets bounced for Miami...I think that's a bad precedent.

If SMU wins.. Then I agree. I'd put a10 win Miami in over a 3 loss sec team, even Bama.

Yeah SMU has a case...and a 3 point loss to BYU (10-2) and a loss to Clemson in championship game shouldn't push them out. Part of why I think ACC gets in 2 regardless.

So then Texas should be in the same talks? Going In The TAMU game their best wins were Vandy and Oklahoma … only good team they played they lost at home to. Look I’m not defending Indiana or the Big Ten but if you give Missouri Indianas type of schedule in the SEC we would be saying they deserve to be in. Indiana did play the 2 teams that played in the national championship last year, is it their fault they were trash this year? Is it Tennessees fault that Oklahoma and Nc State collapsed after our games this year?
Texas was indeed among discussion that they didn’t deserve it until the A&M win. Our resume was better than theirs. I was saying Mizzou didn’t deserve it with 2 SEC losses.

Sure, you can’t help your schedule sometimes (even though you can argue that the conference can manipulate it), but the facts are facts. You have to analyze who you play regardless if it’s the team’s fault or not.

Just bammer

LSU was below.

But by their standards in the past, the worse loss superceded head to head and overall resume. We beat them, blew out LSU on the road, beat Pitt on the road etc.

Head to head and better wins but nah your losses weren't as pretty. They also penalized us for losing bad down the stretch and thus got less credit for our wins.

So why should that stop now?

They beat PSU and Indiana and played no one in the OOC.

We beat Bama and we at least played a bowl team at a neutral site in the OOC.

Our wins aren't that far off and their loss, at home, in the day, only scoring 10 points against Michigan is in a different realm than losing to Arkansas at night on the road.

They are playing worse right now than we are so....eye test?

They've dropped everyone else dramatically under the same circumstances. But I guess they'll just gargle their Buckeyes and give a fanbase that's checked out the home game.

I guess they don't want to watch darling Ohio State get boiled in its own pudding (doing a play that involves scrooge) by us hillbillies 🤷‍♂️

apparently his kids are going through it too. pretty bad

you can also see their fans' apathy in Columbus area hotel prices vs Knoxville area

granted Columbus is a larger metro, but even still, hotels right next to campus are 50%+ cheaper than Knoxville hotels

In 2022 with no running clock Tennessee ran 945 plays in a 13 game season little over 72 plays per game.

In 2024 playing 12 games so far Tennessee has ran 888 plays an average of 74 plays per game.
That’s very surprising to me as it sure didn’t feel that way. With us in particular our defense was far better this year which should lead to more possessions. Another factor I would think is 2022 had more explosive plays and this year’s team was more of a grind it out type of team which meant more plays on each possession. Just my impression as I haven’t backed it up with stats. I’m still surprised we have more plays/game this year but thanks for bringing the facts

plus it allows them to avoid the controversy of Alabama, Ole Miss or USC jr. But Bama bias is real even though they got boat raced by Oklahoma 10 days ago.

He misses a lot of open guys. No knock, but i still think he is drinking through a firehose reading the defenses.

I had someone tell me over Thanksgiving that I was wrong for wishing losses for the rest of the SEC. I laughed and said my regret is that every other SEC team can't go winless through the year. OF course he is a Bama football fan and a Kentucky basketball fan.
I didn't know there was anything else. Every single Bama grad is also a Kroger grad. They attend Bama in fall semester and transfer to Kentucky for the spring semester every year. I don't think they hold classes in the spring at Bama.

Making comments about suicide is deplorable.
