Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Okay, I just realized that if we beat Ohio State at their house, then we have to go to the Rose Bowl and play the number one team Oregon. Alabama, who barely got in plays Notre Dame, who is generally over rated, and then SMU? Seriously? this is some wonky crap.
The auto-byes for teams like Boise / SMU / ASU are beyond stupid. Fix that and I like the 12 team a lot better.

1) Oregon
2) Texas
3) Penn State
4) Notre Dame
5) Georgia
6) Ohio State
7) Tennessee
8) SMU
9) Indiana
10) Boise State
11) Bama
12) Arizona State

Instead of playing Ohio State / Oregon, we'd get Boise State / Texas.
Instead of Notre Dame and SMU (in the second round!!!), Bama would get Ohio State / Penn State.
Instead of getting the winner of Alabama / Notre dame and an auto bid to the second round, SMU gets a home game against Indiana, then a shot at Oregon.

It makes way too much sense, so they'll never do it.

I have seen people say we have to recruit better. And I agree but my big question is how do you do it? Look at the top 10 according to On3:
1. TX
2. Bama
3. Oregon
4. UGA
5. OSU
6. Michicheat
7. AU
8. LSU
9. TAMU
10. TN

That’s 7 out of the top 10 that’s on the SEC. So how do you overcome that? Now I also found something interesting that On3 does. It puts average NIL. Now let’s evaluate that.

TX (215k)
Bama (280k)
Oregon (243 k)
UGA (200k)
OSU (207k)
Michicheat (278k)
AU (190k)
LSU (166k)
TAMU (175k)
TN (178k)

So serious question. How do we realistically ever get into the top 5 in recruiting? And before anyone comes in with oh that doesn’t matter in the portal era, yea it does. Ole Miss built it through the portal and look where they are.
two things....
1. i think we are recruiting better. if you go back and look at previous year's classes, point totals, average player ratings etc...we're matching or outperforming, right now, teams that had finished inside the top 7 in previous years' classes. so it's almost like a moving average....the point differential between #1 and # 10 is shrinking, so the top talent is spreading out more than it did in previous years, where Bama, OSU, UGA were hoarding it all. they're still "the destinations", so they're still getting top tier kids in droves....but the margins are smaller....and the portal is affecting overall competitive depth those programs used to enjoy.
2. to me, it feels like were' to the point where it literally is coming down to 2-3 kids that can take a #10 class to #5 or 6. i think our recruiting on defense is top notch. i think our offensive skill position is top notch. the two positions that i think are still a bit behind the curve when compared to the rest of the roster is corner back specifically and OL in general. both are getting better....but both lack the really high end guys we've seen us get at other spots on the roster. getting guys like Bennet Warren last year and Sanders this year are really good signs...just need to keep that up and maybe add to that. i think we're getting better at Safety, missing shady does hurt, but not detrimental. but corner back...i like what i've seen from Ricky Gibson....seems like we do great at getting a bunch of guys that can play star and safety...but struggle on the true cover guys.

good news, we've been pretty darn good in the portal on both of those fronts, McCoy and Heard were big pick ups, so we've been able to supplement as we go along.

combined with the portal and recruiting, the roster is flipped and we're now in that "the floor is 9" category in terms of reasonable expectations in a given season. had a shot at the SEC title game this year, and are going to the playoff. hard to say "we've arrived" because we haven't gotten the UGA monkey off our back....but that's really all that's left in terms of regular season buggaboos, well that and road games. Bama bug...dead. Florida bug...dead. road games...obviosly losing to Arkansas...big one that shouldn't have happened.

i'm sold on the path, philosophy, direction, culture etc...proof is in the pudding. there's just a couple of hurdles left.

So when do we get to go shopping?

As Rodney Dangerfield said in the pro shop in Caddyshack---

gimme 3 Olinemen, 2 Dlinemen, 1 Edge, 1-2 experienced LB, 1 elite WR, and set by buddy Wong up here with the hole shibang....

To save money my daughter is going to UT Martin starting next fall for pre vet..... Her plan is to go to Veterinary school at Knoxville........

I'm a nervous wreck and trying to enjoy all the last times associated with high school.....
Take it all in. Before you know it they will be graduating college and launching into life.

Why does everyone think a coach needs a raise when he does what he was hired for? I guess you want to pay higher ticket prices when you go to a game.
lol.

in a profession that is literally built around a revolving door, retention is at the top of the list. really good coaches stand out like sore thumbs. and when demand high, price follows.

i don't think we're going to be THAT aggressive in the portal....we have needs. but i can't see us doing all that.

This NIL stat is very interesting when we hear how great our NIL collective is, but that we won't overpay, our ticket/concession prices are at the top, our revenue is off the charts, yet we aren't spending what others are willing to spend. What does that say? I believe we spend money at the level of the top 6 and we will find ourselves in the top 5...
Wonder if our Admin is not willing to spend based on Heup being able to do more with less when he got here... I'd like to get to the next level and see our average spend be 200k+ and in a few years, we could be at the top.

As Cooper Flagg goes is how Duke's team will. The other Frosh for Duke is a terrific outside shooter though.
Duke goes 9 deep in the rotation but they're very young. They seem to be getting better quickly. When Flagg and Maluach are in the game, they're the best defensive team in the country. Just insane rim protection.

Offense is their weakness so far.

Gonna preemptively say the Vols won't be #1 forever and there should be no handwringing over it. This season is gonna be nuts.

I think we can get to March as a 2 seed again though.
Agree--- I'm actually very excited and pleasantly surprised at how well the team seems to be gelling and working together this soon in the season... Got a long way to go and haven't even hit SEC play, with after the past two days, shows the country we have the toughest conference by far. Unfortunately, we (SEC) will start cannibalizing one another, someone has to W and L, but we are definitely poised at this point to do very well.
