Recruiting Football Talk VIII

December 14, 1967

Obscure, but pretty cool.

During Bob Hope’s “Christmas Special,” Bob Johnson was introduced as the Center on the LOOKS All-America Team. One of Johnson’s “teammates” was OJ Simpson.

Johnson was a 2x All-SEC player and was named the SEC’s best Lineman and best blocker in 1967. He was also an Academic All-American and finished 6th in the Heisman Trophy voting.

He was also the first draft pick ever by the Cincinatti Bengals.

Well said. The really good ones tend to be some of the smartest guys on the roster. In our system the center is the second most important position on offense behind the quarterback. Obvious every time Cooper was out. We did load up on OL in 23 recruiting so hopefully some of them are ready. It does seem likely we will need one or two from the portal but that seems manageable. Hard to lead the SEC in rushing if your OL coach sucks?
The most that I have ever watched the OL was when a good friend’s son was the staring right tackle for Southlake High School. He was a really smart kid and was never rattled by the DL. He watched film every week of the upcoming opponent. He knew their tendencies and knew what they would do depending upon how they lined up. It was so fun to watch him totally keep his opponents out of the backfield. He gave up one sack all season. One game, his Dad was telling me that the DE was a 5 star already committed to texas. The first half the DE never got past the line of scrimmage and didn’t make a tackle. 2nd half, they moved him to the other side and he made some plays Until the coach had the RT pull and he pancaked the 5 star DE. The guy didn’t play anymore.

His Dad told me that he was going to A&M. I thought on scholarship, but no, son was ready to move on to his career. (Something in computers). I was extremely sad that such a smart football mind was going to waste it on computers. 😂

Probably like a Jordan Matthews situation. "You haven't produced/performed up to your pay. You're taking a pay cut on a 1yr contract to prove yourself." Not to mention he's currently 4th on the depth chart behind Lewis (Freshman) and Bishop (Walk-on RSFR) with Duane Morris coming in next year.

I think he's got a world of potential, and his injuries have been extremely unfortunate. Hopefully he overcomes the injury bug at his next stop.
This whole post is conjecture lol

Literally just finished a bottle of that. One of my staples. Easy to drink. Smooth. Really good bottle for the price imo. Blade and bow is a very close second.. Better than Blanton's, at least as good....Basil up there for me too. Eagle rare is tops for me...
If you like Blanton's give Bowman bros a shot. It's Buffalo Trace juice, same mash bill as Blantons, aged in VA. If you can find the single barrel, all the better.
