Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Well that's just not true. Plenty of unproven/bad college coaches have gone to the NFL for positional gigs and then flamed out.

Here's an easy one, Greg Schiano. 68-67 when he left Rutgers for Tampa...was he a good coach?
Sometimes I wonder what it would have been like if we had hired Saban after he flamed out in the NFL. Could he have won all those championships here?

If the OL and the WRs don't play well, I'm going to fire Pope and Elarbee. Everyone else is safe atm, unless they make a bonehead move. Looking at you Banks and Willie.

Yeah, by no means am I saying Pope is better than Burns. But if ya look at our recent WR talent that really produced (800+ yards) while here...

Tillman, Velus, & Hyatt were all Tee Martin additions

Squirrel is the only Heupel era recruit to hit 800 or more yards in a season so far. At UCF they had 2 each year in 2 of his 3 seasons there.

Every coach in College and the Pro's know football. Their ability to transfer that knowledge to the players is key. Also never forget many times a coach is hired to perform miracles with lack of talent to do so or lack of talent to do what they want the players to do from the get go.

I totally agree. I have seen very good parents have bad kids and I have seen bad parents have good kids, but they are the exceptions. Good people propagate good people.
Like you mine were gone when the graduated high school one to college and the other the Army. Both married in their early twenties to good people. My daughter and son in law bought their own home at 23.
I took a lot of flack from people for making my kids work for everything they got. My daddy did the same. He used say, "Don't do anything for anyone that they can do for themselves, that's not helping them, it's hurting them. Helping is doing the things they can't do for themselves."
Common sense...but it seems lacking amongst millions of a certain mindset.

Bama had an institutional system in place that allowed them to cheat with impunity. They had complete cooperation from the top down. If Saban got that at Tennessee, then yes. But I doubt he would have. Without that, he'd have won championships, but not like he did at Bama.

Listened to some Ohio State podcasts…..takeaways:

1. We can’t run on them. Oregon and PSU were tougher than they will face against us.
2. We can’t throw on them. Because of our inability to run on them the safeties will be able to help in pass coverage.
3. They will be able to get defensive calls in because the D coordinator practiced with Cutcliffe at Duke.
4. They simply have to slow down our D Line and they will throw all over us because Carson Beck did.
5. The cold weather will impact us.
6. Most think they’ll win and cover.
If I was an ignorant OSU fan...I would probably think all of those things also. Because I would probably be a ignorant pretentious Yankee Bammer like the rest of them.

One thing I have found out about most of them through all of this, is that they do not deign to actually learn much about anybody they are playing. I hope their staff and team are just as pretentious and ignorant as the fanbase...but I doubt it, it seems like we always get our opponents best shot.

Do you get a Christmas vacation from work?
The first 27 years I worked here we got Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. For the last 3 years we’ve gotten a whole week off which has been great. Next year we go to 1/2 day Christmas Eve and all day Christmas. Hate going backwards with it but I’m not gonna complain too much. All the years my dad worked he never got a paid holiday, sick day, or vacation day, unless it was before I was born.

I'm a numbers guy, just how I work...

2021 - 257.1 passing yards a game, 3 WRs finished with 400 yards, only 2 WRs caught 25 or more receptions.
2022 - 326.1 passing yards a game, 5 WRs finished with 400 yards, 5 WRs caught 30 or more receptions.
2023 - 243.2 passing yards a game, 2 WRs finished with 400 yards, 2 WRs caught 25 or more receptions.
2024 - 230.9 passing yards a game, 2 WRs finished with 400 yards, 4 WRs caught 25 or more receptions.

2022 was objectively the best season offensively we've seen, especially through the air. It was Hendon's 2nd year running the show and it was the last season Alex was here as the OC

In 2 years with Joey Halzle as OC we've gotten more conservative in the passing game, taking less deep shots and running more often.

A few reasons I believe that's happened, reason 1 QB play. Milton in 2023 was who he was, Nico in his 1st year in 2024. The other big reason is a uptick in RB talent/play. 2023 Jaylen Wright and then 2024 Dylan Sampson. Heupel's offense is always going to run the ball and because of the uptick in talent in the RB room it's allowed him and Halzle to lean on that more than in previous years.

SEC play requires you be able to run the rock, so in no way do I think it's a bad trend...as far as winning games goes. But I'd like to see a bit more explosiveness and aggressiveness like we had in 2022.

At that time, you don’t win 8 games at Rutgers 5 times in 11 years if you’re not a good coach. One of those years being 11 wins

These idiot OSU reporters saying the Big10 is a better conference than the SEC are going to make me pull for all of the SEC teams in bowl games......something I normally would never do. They actually said they thought Oregon, OSU, and Penn St are the 3 best teams in the playoff.
I’m actually loving the trash talk. I think it’s because no one expects us to win.

I’m hoping we see it start to trend back to 2022 starting tomorrow. Nico has a season under his belt, Matthews has played a decent amount now, along with hopefully squirrel, Bru, D’onte being more healthy, OL should be healthy and depth/young guys should be improved by this time of year.

Don’t think it will be 2022 level but hopefully somewhere in between.

Im in the same boat, leaving from Johnson City around 9 Saturday, but if it snows I may need to leave around 8 if it snows. If you hear anything about the snow please let me know!
Will do! My gameplan is to get up around 6 and make some calls to check roads. KY is looking the safest, but my only concern there is it’s mostly highways and not interstate, and Norton is looking to be the worst part of that trek. If I get a report I don’t like, I guess through Knoxville I go!

I just remembered we were in Southeast Asia this time last year. I wanted to bring some real liquor back for @InVOLuntary, @mrMet, @MetalVolunteer, and the entire fine whiskey gang. But I had doubts about clearing customs.

No trip this year. The guy who replaced our roofs is prolly in Tahiti. 😂 Expecting a thank you note, at least.

I mean with Beck out, UGA isn’t looking to be such a strong contender anymore.

Same, I think Nico in year 2 will help improve that and I think the WR room has some potential studs that have gotten some reps this year from the injuries ahead of them. Brazzel is also just a 2nd year guy in his 1st year here and him returning should be a big benefit next year as well.
