More recent generations of soldiers are much open about their issues. WW1 and 2 vets were a different breed. The WW1 guys weren't far removed from the much harsher realities of the less tame 1800's and WW2 soldiers had just endured the Great Depression.
They undoubtedly suffered either in silence and you had others that took it out on their families throughout the 50's. Those guys also had a much more simplified outlook toward the enemy being "evil" an inciting the situation.
Wars since then have typically been long-term wars of attrition with more civilians involved that blurred the lines of morality. Plus, info is much more widespread and the media much more willing to run negative stories about veterans and the military in general.
There was a Nationalism, unified hatred, a vitriol toward a common enemy. Amazing how potent hate can be, when there are no checks & balances. Media has always been used to further perverted messages, WW2 Germany, Cambodia, Rwanda.
Issues post Korea, at least that I see. Yes, media is covering more than ever. Be it embeds, or round the clock news cycle. 'Wars' are now politically motivated, further, justified.
Every single, day, hour, & minute people are privy to every single atrocity. How often do we hear about a heroic effort? So, then with ONLY two major political parties, does it not follow that people would draw a politically biased conclusion about events?
I think that's just the World we live in now.
People allow largely negative narratives to be driven into their core belief system. It's an easy target. Instead of applying nuance to an otherwise complex issue.
Once had a manager at this job I had, at a Roadhouse, Dalton I believe. Guy was an oracle, he said, Support police & military persons always. Support them, but questions their motives & leadership always.
Further, be nice. Always be nice, until its time to not, be nice.
Guy was always getting into fights, weird.
