Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Lol.
His vision improved a ton in the off season. His power and ability to break tackles is also really good.

You can stand by what you said, but it still makes you look stupid.

He’s a good player.

Benefits greatly from always facing light boxes.

1500 yards and 22 touchdowns as a junior and he’s likely gonna get a 5th round grade at best and consider coming back.

Agree that Huepel is doing great and moving us in the right direction. But whether or not he makes some necessary changes will say a lot about his ceiling going forward, and I hope he makes those changes. The window of opportunity will only be open so long.

He needs to upgrade some coaching staff and hit the portal hard or a repeat of this season will be the ceiling next year.
We hardly (actively) changed coaches last year.

And yet we became 2 games better.

Maybe, just maybe, we give coaches more than a year or two.

I'll trust Hype for now. He's done the impossible so far.

Reality is every team recruits 3 stars, your see something that makes them a 4 after development. Hyatt was a 4 star. We have not receiver talent as close to OSU since Price, Kent and company if ever. The J Swain teams were are pretty good.
Hyatt wasn’t wanted by his home state school, which wasn’t particularly great at the time.

The “2025 Roster is Concerning” thread in the FF is beyond depressing. Heupel, Boyd, Plowman, & White have to know that last night needs to be a wake up call to improve and fast. If Heupel goes 8-4 or God forbid 7-5, it’s going to get ugly,
It's the FF 😆😅🤣

Or maybe this is just blue font, honestly can't tell. We just made the freakin playoffs, so I'll assume just a poke at the FF.

Yeah, but I mentioned in the game thread Golesh just hired Burns as his WR coach for next season. Doubt Burns leaves Golesh hanging like that and doubt Heupel does that to Golesh either. We do need an upgrade(s) imo.
He should go get Burns and pay him well. It is what a cut throat coach would do and if we need the guy, go get him.

Our OL. Coop is worth his money. Not sure anyone else is. Heard may have been a freshman AA at LSU, but it feels like he's been doggin' it here. Karic is average at best. I feel like Spraggins and Campbell have regressed, not improved. Some will probably disagree (Marco), but I feel like Elarbee is a liability.
Elarbee’s squad sucks.

Heard and Karic were absolutely horrible yesterday. Cooper was really good I thought. Campbell Jr. is just ok.

If you take our offensive numbers over the past two years vs p4 teams, it isn’t impressive at all.

Our stats are padded because we can stil hang 60 vs FCS schools.
Past 2 years have looked nothing like ‘22. No motion, no hitting Hyatt-caliber guys on wheel routes, no tempo, no creativity. I don’t think Milton had the capacity and I don’t think Nico had the experience to run it like that. Not to mention we need to find that Hyatt-caliber guy and better OL. I don’t think it’s a matter of “they’ve figured out the system” as much as it is Huepel and co need to figure out what changes it’s gonna take to run things like we did in ‘22, and do it.

Also, We were fine against Bama and fine against OU. Not what they once were, but still solid P4.

8-4 is a possibility. I lean more toward 9-3. A lot depends on next year's OL, IMO, and I've already expressed my doubts in Elarbee.
yea if we go 8-4 next year we need to question the entire staff-from heupel to the ga’s- the entire football staff

Here’s a thought: maybe we don’t need to blow everything up trying to win yesterday’s game.

What are the odds we face that scenario ever again?

Elimination game on the road against a top 3 program who was coming off a bad loss, playing a home game with the world against them, two weeks to prepare, in 15 degree weather. Honestly I have a hard time imagining very many of the elite teams from recent years winning that game. Maybe 2019 LSU? But even then I’m not sure.
Too much reason and logic here.

Sersiously, just a once-in-a-decade shiz spot for any playoff team.

#7 ranked and yet 1) On the road... 2) top 2 talent opponent 3) at night?! 4) coldest Saturday of the year BY FAR....?!? IDK how things could have been set up worse.

Literally the entire universe was against us last night. First they need to fix the seeding nonsense. Then we simply go out and lose 2 or fewer games moving forward...host a game, then go to neutral (fair) games and we'll be fine.

Otoh I'll say this was never a team built for 4 straight wins vs top opponents. We were too inconsistent offensively. I don't suspect that to be a problem moving forward with a more veteran QB.

Heupel won’t do this in my opinion, but he needs to have a really tough conversation with his friend Glen Elarbee and go find a new offensive line coach if we’re going to get to the next level. I don’t envy having to do that, but sometimes that’s the way it goes when you hire your friend.

We also need to find a way to up the talent in the wide receiver room whether that be through paying big money in the portal or developing guys like Matthews and Staley. Way too much inconsistency in that room the last two seasons and just no real game changers. Nico has areas he needs to improve in, but he was dead to rites last night with zero help from his offensive line and zero help from his receivers.

And if our wide receivers coach isn’t capable of developing Matthews and Staley into game changers, then maybe a new wide receivers coach is needed too.

I think there are definitely OL coach upgrades out there. And I also don’t think Elarbee is as bad as many say. But no doubt Vols got manhandled at the line of scrimmage vs OSU. Was a problem for the DL too. But OL looked weak and slow.

Not like they were in the 90s, but the elite ones are. Hence two being taken in the first round recently. And Jeanty receiving first round buzz this year.

Tthose just below elite still get taken round 2-3.
Here is a 2nd round projection.

Congrats fool, you played yourself.

Some coaches, I can agree with that. Halze is on thin ice, but I agree. He’s not someone we need to move on from yet. He needs a bit more time and he’s still fairly young.

With that being said. Glen Elarbee has had 4+ years and we still haven’t had a consistent starter that he recruited out of high school. We have to overspend every year in the portal to make up for his lack of development. Even our backups are upperclassmen. Why didn’t we play any young OL when we were getting blown out? Are we not developing them?

Looking at the results of recruiting and development in that room, I’d say yes!

I haven't been impressed with Elarbee since he arrived. It feels like we talk about offensive line issues every season. Every starter on the offensive line has either been a transfer or a Pruitt recruit, and player development seems to have regressed.

As for Pope, I'm also uncertain about him. While he recruits well, the receiver play over the past two years has been inconsistent and raises questions about coaching.
