Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Fun, surprising stats:

- Vol's all-time on-field record: 886-417, a .680 winning percentage.

- Vol's record in the Heupel era: 37-15, a .712 winning percentage.

- Vol's record in the playoff era, back to 2014: 82-56, a .594 winning percentage with a 6-1 mark in bowl games, a #1 ranking, and a playoff appearance.

Not as bad as you might think, honestly.

Otoh I'll say this was never a team built for 4 straight wins vs top opponents. We were too inconsistent offensively. I don't suspect that to be a problem moving forward with a more veteran QB.

Agreed. I'd add our roster isn't deep enough to sustain the bumps and bruises four playoff games entailed, especially when the first is played in 15 degree weather.

My biggest fix to this playoff next year would be neutral sites the whole way. The homefield advantage is simply too much. I'm going out on a limb and saying all of the first round playoff games will be blowouts next year, too.

We hardly (actively) changed coaches last year.

And yet we became 2 games better.

Maybe, just maybe, we give coaches more than a year or two.

I'll trust Hype for now. He's done the impossible so far.
Imagine how much better if we had actually gone out to get established coaches instead of just promoting GA’s from within on the offensive side of the ball.

Huepel has not stayed in house for defensive hires like he has on O. D has improved, O has regressed.

Side note: I think Inge was a huge pickup. He did well with what he had this year, and is activity trying to improve the roster at that position.

Here is a 2nd round projection.

Congrats fool, you played yourself.

Great resources. Quick what’s atozsports say?

Listen buddy… I stand by what I said. And rest assured, no one - me especially - has ever posted anything on this forum and thought “boy I hope @mrcheckerboards agrees with me!”

You’ll see.

Not like they were in the 90s, but the elite ones are. Hence two being taken in the first round recently. And Jeanty receiving first round buzz this year.

Tthose just below elite still get taken round 2-3.
Chase Brown and Kyren Williams were 5th rounders, Chuba Hubbard was a 4th rounders. 3 of the best RB’s in the NFL this season and all were verrry good (especially Chuba and Chase brown) in college. Jaylen Wright who averaged 7.5 YPC was a 4th rounder. Trent Richardson was a top 5 pick, Kamara was a 3rd rounder. Where a RB is evaluated for the NFL means literally nothing lol

He’s a good coach. Great coaches have to make hard decisions. I hope he makes the decision that’s best for Tennessee and not his own personal interests.

The blue chip ration thing is real and we are trending in the right direction. There was no way we were winning more than one game in these playoffs. Keep stacking talent and stars. Ya can’t skip a step on the way to the top.

What did I lose?

You’re not even good at this.
Did you already forget what you said?

Your initial claim, Sampson isnt good.
2nd claim.... good running backs get drafted in rounds 2-3

Me------ Hes improved greatly, hes pretty damn good
Also me.... shows you 2 projections that have Sampson going day 2. Which makes him good.

You- Throws insult.

There maybe you got lost somewhere, but heres a recap.

Tagliatelle with an outrageous amount of fresh lemon (cooked down), some basil leaves, salt, and nuovo Tuscan olive oil. Feeling like I may survive this game and this board. 😂😋

Well, last night’s game sucked. Ohio State had two options after being embarrassed at home by Michigan. They could roll over and play dead or bow up and play their best game of the season. They chose option 2. Not a fan of OSU in any way shape or form.

They should not have been able to host after losing to an unranked team at home. The combination of the home field advantage and the cold Ohio night was a definite factor. This game would have been different in Knoxville.

Our coaching/training/medical/equipment staff didn’t help our team. I am very disappointed in this situation. The OSU staff put big coats on the skill players every chance they got. It’s a simple way to retain body heat and reduce energy expenditure and reduce injury rates. Warm bodies don’t get injured as easily. It seemed like every body involved on the Tennessee side was trying to prove how tough they were and could ignore the cold rather than acknowledging how cold affects the athletes and taking appropriate precautions and measures to prevent the issues.

OSU had a great game plan for Tennessee. The OSU players executed it almost to perfection. I’m embarrassed to say that the Tennessee coaches were not prepared. It was obvious.

I had flashbacks to the’97 championship game against Nebraska where Tennessee was absolutely embarrassed. They took it as a challenge rather than a failure. I really hope the current Tennessee team and coaches do the same. In 1998 it meant a national championship. Maybe it will happen again.

I will not hang my head. Even after a miserable loss, the next day and every day that I draw breath, it means more to be a Tennessee Volunteer than anything else. Being a Tennessee Volunteer is more than just being a fan. Being a Tennessee Volunteer is a way of life. Being a Tennessee Volunteer means being a better person and contributing to the improvement of the world.

Side note, not comparing this to religion, marriage, or parenthood, but being a religious spouse and parent who is a Tennessee Volunteer is that much better for all involved.

As always:

Go Vols! 🤠
Amen. Preach it Doc!!
🧡🧡
Just got back home to God’s country. Our fans were great. OSU not so much.
The section we were in was on the goal line lower level and well over half of that section was Tennessee fans. All those tickets came from OSU season-ticket holders. Pretty sad. There were four nice ladies directly in front of us that had the same season tickets for 50 years and they couldn’t have been nicer, but the norm for the Ohio State fans were to show us how limited their vocabulary is.

Here was the best part of the game

You’re being intentionally daft or otherwise just bored and trying to troll for engagement.

I never said he wasn’t any good.

Carry on though.

Dylan Sampson isn’t as good as we think. He just pads stats because good teams let us run as opposed to throwing the ball all over the yard because they know - especially on the road - that we aren’t good enough to consistently have the necessary 8+ play drives needed to score enough points to win games.

I don’t understand how or why Heupel’s offense now has so few wrinkles. It’s not like Heup is helpless without an experienced OC. He IS an experienced OC with a hell of a track record. He has to be signing off on this playbook and these play calls. Did he fall in love with winning games on the ground and with defense last year or something? It’s just bizarre.

I know it’s not all playcalling and people have pointed out the plays are there. But there’s still so little creativity it seem.
Big difference between a 5th year senior running the offense that had it down compared to a redshirt freshman qb. It seems to me the offense is run off of limiting turnovers and mistakes

I said he isn’t as good “as we think.” Never said he wasn’t good.

Again, you’re either bored and fishing for engagement, or you don’t understand words.

Regardless of which of those two are the reason, i don’t care to continue with you. There’s a number of posters on this forum who I respect and enjoy bantering with. You’re not one of them. Whoops, was that another insult? My bad.
