Recruiting Football Talk VIII

People say Harbaugh cheated, and maybe he did - I can’t say for sure

But Michigan did stick with Harbaugh a really long time, through many bowl blowouts and hard losses to OSU

He finally and steadily built a national championship roster with tons of NFL talent out of classes frequently ranked in the 8 to 15 range. Took him nine years I think.

That’s the path for Tennessee, cheating aside. Patient, steady. Learn from the losses and keep building.

This program needs stability to win at a high level. Our history makes that clear.
That and having a very productive sign stealing scheme, but yeah.

yall see that article with the OSU players talking about how the defensive staff and scout team knew everything about us?

Oof.
I believe there is definitely room for improvement with our staff’s organization, scouting, game planning and strategy….. we look woefully inept on a far too frequent basis, which means the opposition is dialed in! That’s football and easy to spot at any level.

I’m ready to upgrade to a worry square.
Platonic solids. Stepping up our game.

3 weeks of prep definitely helped.
Arkansas' DC pretty much said that he knew what we would do on offense based on what look they gave us on defense. In other words, our offense has become predictable because defenses know what look to give our offense in certain down and distance situations that will cause us to check into specific plays that we evidently go to almost all the time against those looks. Add that to Tate Ratledge's comments about them knowing what our d-line was about to do based on alignments and stances and it's obvious that our coaches didn't do enough self-scouting. Maybe Heupel needs to hire a few coaches that specifically just watch our practice and game film to make sure we're not giving away what we're doing or becoming too predictable.

It could be that defenses just know what we're about to do most of the time instead of them suddenly figuring out how to defend us. That would certainly help explain the drop off on offense the last two seasons. I hope Heupel sees all those comments from other coaches and players because that's definitely fixable. This needs to be a good learning year where Heupel sees our deficiencies and evolves some things in the program to fix them. If we lost the element of surprise and are able to gain it back, then this offense can certainly take a big leap forward next season.

Heupel needs to adapt and evolve his offense.
As a high school defensive coordinator there have been several games that i knew 100% of the plays the other team were going to run based on personnel and formation. Some times we stopped them other times we didn't. It all comes down to the players. If the other team has better players there is nothing you can do to stop them.

It just comes down to the fact Tennessee didn't have the players to beat Ohio state.

Heupel hasn't forgotten how to call his offense. He 100% still has everything form 22 in the playback he just doesn't have the dudes to run that.

The offense has adapted and evolved. It's just been focused on the run game. Year 1&2 it was all mostly inside zone. Now it's a ton of gap scheme stuff.

Our offense was so predictable and vanilla this year that HS teams could run it and easily scout it. Something negatively changed with the offense the past 2 years and it needs to be fixed
The only thing that changed is the speed which we executed the offense. This offense is based on going fast. Hooker could do it. I assume Nico will be able to do it next year. We really need better tackles and better QB decision making.
Fast forces defensive mistakes and mismatches

Ohio St been a playoff contender for over a decade. Lost in the title game 4 years ago. We not on that level yet.

We should be comparing programs who haven't sniff the playoffs in years and how their spending has translated to wins or lack thereof.
I think us to Clemson circa 2012 is a fair comparison. Dabo made the necessary changes and went on a historic run. Hopefully, Huepel does the same.

Am I the only one who thinks next year feels more like a rebuilding year rather than the "year we put it all together"? At least half the OL will be new. Jenkins announcing he's entering the portal today makes me question the DL even more. Still think we need safety help and no truly proven WRs IMO. A QB can't really be great without a support system around him, and I question the support we're giving Nico next year.

Definitely.

Unless we go OMiss in the portal...which we arent gonna due to 5 young WRs that in time will be very good...the vegas o/u for wins next year will be 8 or 8.5. This year was 8.5. I think next year its 8. We will likely go 9-3.
