Recruiting Football Talk VIII

I really like that Saban retired due to NIL "leveling the playing field" but I'm really starting to hate NIL and what college sports is becoming, especially football. I didn't expect to read "Arion Carter possibly hitting the portal". I thought he was our next big time leader of our defense. And I also thought we had another Cameron Carr mid-season portal hopper, when I read the post about "Bishop Boswell coming back". I forgot he was injured and just returning from that. 🙄

I don't think anything can be done about the money being paid or tampering but a 1 time transfer has to be implemented or it's just going to keep deteriorating college sports.

This really sucks.
Yeah I’ve said for a few weeks that we simply will not be able to compete with several universities in the NIL arena over the long term. Tennessee is simply not wealthy and large enough to compete financially with schools like Texas, OSU, etc. We can probably be Tier 2 but we are going to have to do it a little differently than the richest schools. Rabid fans does not mean richest but some just can’t seem to grasp that concept. The narrative that Heupel doesn’t want elite players and won’t spend the money is comical. If you have a budget of $500k for a house but someone else offers the seller $600k you’re not getting the house. Doesn’t mean you didn’t want or didn’t try. It just means someone else has more money. Simple reality.

Internet rumors claim another victim with the Carter stuff.

Per AP.

My stubborn nature has taken an ever increasing shellacking over the course of this season. Taken never preceded VOLUNTARY “vacations” from here and can’t guarantee I won’t follow you. Good luck, buddy.
The ignore feature has really made it seem quite a bit better for me. Hopefully more people will use it and stick around. It’s sad how many of our better fans and posters are leaving.

Its my understanding that the portal "closes" on the 28th...BUT thats just when players can no longer ENTER the portal right? So we can still sign Thompson and maybe someone else this session at any time even after the 28th? Hype has been a good closer on portal targets in the past, as well as his most desired recruits. I think he will grab a couple he deems most important to plug holes in the roster. Most importantly, he will find a way to keep the guys we really need...which is a VERY difficult task right now with everyone throwing ridiculous money at these kids.

DUKE...DUKE just paid twice as much as we pay Nico for a pretty good QB that will never get them to an ACC championship game. Much less the playoffs. I cant wait for the Congress/whomever to get this salary cap in place. $22 million or whatever ridiculous figure it is. Dukes QB will make as much money playing college football in a crappy conference this year as i will earn in my ENTIRE LIFE...and I make decent money at low 6 figures. The insanity has to end.
Someone said players on CFP teams will have 5 days to enter the portal after their teams are eliminated. If that's true, hopefully there are still more talented players to come in the portal. If not, not sure there are any great talents left to pick up. So, I advocate tampering like hell to get some talented guys from other teams to enter the Spring portal.

I 100% support players getting paid, always have. For way too long a lot of people got rich off others hard work and its about time the tables turned.

However, what they have with this "pay for play but let's call it something different" is going to end up with me tuning out. The reason I watch college sports and not so much professional is because I'm not interested in getting emotionally invested in a bunch of mercenaries playing on a billionaire vanity project. Sure, college athletics has its dark side, but there isn't much daylight between those two. College is actually more extreme in many ways

I would propose that this is actually damaging interest/fervor in college athletics, but its being masked by increases in viewership from the gambling public.

We need collective bargaining, a commissioner, long term contracts, etc. And to hold on to what makes college sports great.

No...they already have a name or two...Johnny Majors called them "The Legion of the Miserable" and my name for them.."The Idiot Margin"

I just checked in for a few to see if it was as bad as I thought it was going to be.

Pretty much...I've fought the good fight against these fools for years, I'm going to leave it to somebody else now.

And by the way...I didn't call you stupid the other day. You obviously didn't read till the end.

Adios 🙋‍♂️
Yea you did, same to you Adios.

🤷 You posted after I did.

*I've been at work and trying to catch up on the threads. I just saw this in the portal thread. It looks like AP has been talking out both sides of his mouth.

Taking on my nephew has been a challenge, and my wife's grandmother passed away Dec, 7th. Also my 21yo niece (my nephew's older sister) is struggling with early adulthood. She flunked all her college classes this semester. My wife's sister passed away in 2011, and these are her kids. She was my wife's only sibling. My mother-in-law raised them, and neither of them have any coping skills for the real world. My wife's stepfather died unexpectedly last year, and now these kids don't have a male authority figure in their lives either, so I'm somehow expected to fill that role now. This wouldn't be such a big deal, except for the fact that their black uncle was always portrayed as the family villain. Which is crazy, considering that my niece and nephew both have criminal, absentee fathers and my wife is the only woman in the family that hasn't been married and divorced multiple times. They essentially disowned my wife when she started dating me almost 30 years ago. Sorry for the rant. It's been an interesting year to say the least, and they all (mother-in-law, niece, and nephew) acted a fool yesterday at the annual Christmas breakfast that I host every year for my side of the family. They embarrassed my wife and basically ruined Christmas day.
Sorry to hear that you're going through this. You're a good man. Hang in there.

Exactly it's not only for players but the housing in our area has gotten crazy. I know houses built for 20k 50 years ago are selling for 200k now it's crazy simply crazy. Only teams with pretty much unlimited resources can stay at the top. Coaches could put half there salary in to NIL and still wouldn't guarantee a top level team.
