Colleges unwilling to pay for the “top” talent are in a bad, bad place right now. It’s simply a world of who’s the highest bidder and I am not investing time or money into that culture. Not how I think we should be raising/training the mindset of the next generation. Sad indictment on our society.Seems to me that there's too many "Or Else" conversation going on in college football now.
You pay me what I want "or else" I leave.

The reason it would stand up in courts is because there is a bargaining agreement. That’s the solid foundation the NFL relies on. Without it you get what CFB is now. You still see some of it with some few players in some form or fashion saying they just won’t play. But not to the level of what is happening in CFB. The first MAJOR step for CFB to “fix” the portal is to create a bargaining agreement between the schools and players. Literally making an NFL-lite. And this brings on so many other issues for instance “why should I pay the prices I see now for such a mediocre product compared to the NFL?”.I think there will be a salary cap for the team not by position. That's true in the NFL now and would stand up in court. It wouldn't make a difference though because NIL would still be a thing and would be a far bigger enticement than what the salary would be. It would do nothing to fix this problem. Maybe multi-year contracts with penalties would help with the year to year shopping around.

It surely has to happen at some point. Although coaches have been doing the same thing for decades. Grabbing a bag and bolting for the next one.The reason it would stand up in courts is because there is a bargaining agreement. That’s the solid foundation the NFL relies on. To be honest I think we fans should be throwing the blame at our universities not the NCAA. From what I’ve read and come to understand it’s the universities that tell the NCAA what to do and how to govern. Not the other way around.
Its no secret most of CFB has figured out how to handle every part of the portal better than UT.Imo, we play the portal too defensively. We react to people trying to poach our players instead if proactively up their nil’s and only recruit transfers once we are low at a position instead of proactively trying to improve each position
Yes, parents hold the highest standard but all leaders and authority figures are and should be accountable. So a teacher should just teach and wash their hands of how a child is brought up/performs in the classroom? Absolutely the schools, etc. play a role in raising the next generation and should care. It’s up to parents to raise their children, not colleges.
Contracts…..I think there will be a salary cap for the team not by position. That's true in the NFL now and would stand up in court. I feel you on that.Great idea! Go for it!
Fyi, I do give despite having degrees from other schools. Id say you carved yourself our a nice little niche here. Unfortunately, I'm done giving, for now. It shouldnt be incumbent on us to bear 100% of the burden. Time for some other fans to pitch in.
And frankly, I'm an Alum of East Tennessee State, twice. They also have athletics.
What they are doing now isn't NIL or at least what NIL was originally designed to be. I'm all aboard on an athlete or anyone who can sell their worth to a business who wants representation and a positive monetary ROI. That isn't what is happening by and large. What we have now are proxy organizations for each school, raising money and enacting fan taxes, with no oversight or accountability. NIL was originally about an athlete being able to go into the public business sphere to market themselves based upon their association with college athletics and whatever worth might be assigned to that association by those entities. Name, Image, Likeness. What we are doing right now isn't that except in rare cases.I think there will be a salary cap for the team not by position. That's true in the NFL now and would stand up in court. It wouldn't make a difference though because NIL would still be a thing and would be a far bigger enticement than what the salary would be. Are you a Tennessee fanIts no secret most of CFB has figured out how to handle every part of the portal better than UT.
AU sucks every yr now and they are lapping Tennessee
Exactly. And I don’t blame the players because they deserve a part of the pie, too. It’s just hard to say how much without having a legal document that is signed by all parties. One side got too much and now the scale is tipping. Too far? No idea. But it’s definitely unnerving to say the least lol.It surely has to happen at some point. Although coaches have been doing the same thing for decades. Grabbing a bag and bolting for the next one.
I agree with @TN-POSSUM that players should be able to transfer ONE time without penalty but you have to sit out a year just like in past if transferring a 2nd time. The chaos of I can go to 4 different schools in 4 years to follow the money is insane to me.I think there will be a salary cap for the team not by position. That's true in the NFL now and would stand up in court. It wouldn't make a difference though because NIL would still be a thing and would be a far bigger enticement than what the salary would be. Which is my biggest complaint about NIL to begin with. It's not being used at all for which it was actually created. What they are doing now isn't NIL or at least what NIL was originally designed to be. I'm all aboard on an athlete or anyone who can sell their worth to a business who wants representation and a positive monetary ROI. That isn't what is happening by and large. What about all other jobs? Coaches? Scientists? Medical workers? Teachers? *enter in your profession* Etc. Same thing? It’s the transfer portal that needs to change, not NIL.
Hard and fast rule, if you transfer you sit out a year, not exceptions taken, no appeals, no if’s and or buts, no questions asked. Transfer, you sit. Doesn’t matter if yo momma is sick or your granddaddy dies, no exceptions. Transfer = sit out
This would fix it, and not have to touch NIL.
This is just dumb.Last year the Vols tried to recruit a player and offered him $50,000. He chose his home state school for the same money and he was a solid starter. I am told that this year that same player will make $350,000. Almost all the $50,000 starting players on his current team had to be bumped to 350,000 just to retain them because of other schools poaching them. This is college football in 2025. This is why many fans will find something else to do on Saturdays in the Fall.
