Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Coaches that win games can still make mistakes. Look at Texas right now. They've got a shot at winning the national title and many people feel they're starting the wrong guy at QB. It would be one thing if the receivers ahead of Matthews were performing at a high level. But they weren't. Which is why it would have made sense to let the young guys play and prove themselves. If they weren't any good then it wouldn't be a big deal cause the older guys ahead of them weren't good either. But recruiting an elite guy and never giving him an opportunity to prove himself in a struggling position group makes zero sense.

The worst thing that could have happened is Matthews plays as bad as the older guys and we realize we need to find a better receiver for next year. Instead now we're paying him more money in hopes he sticks around and lives up to his 5-star potential.
I agree with this that the WRs in front of MM sucked this year for the most part. They were also injured and missed entire games at MM position and he still didnt play much. We needed him. Where we differ is on our opinions of whether he was ready or not. I think if he was ready, he would have been on the field. You think apparently that he was ready and the coaches who coach him everyday and watch him in the film room, meetings, and on tje field at practice every day were wrong about his readiness. I think its far, far more likely that they know when a WR can contribute better than any fan. Including both you and I...

Kamara was a backup RB here

I get it. I mentioned Butch in the post. I think this staff is far more competent than Butch. As an aside...i think the events of this portal put Pope on notice. If he somehow isn't worried about losing his job..and more focused than he has ever been, then hes a fool and will not be at UT much longer. Getting rid of 5 WRs out of 8 in your room is horrific. I don't see how that isn't failure to develop talent on his part. The writing is on the wall. The WRs need to be better next year or hes on the way out IMO. They better be REALLY good in 2027 when Matthews and Staley are juniors and these 3 very talented guys from 2025 are sophs.

Never said I thought he was ready. To me that question is irrelevant. He's a freshman. It's expected he won't be as prepared as upperclassmen. The question should be could he have helped us? And IMO he could have given the talent he displayed in his limited opportunities. It's no different than DJ Lagway at Florida. Was he ready this year? Prolly not. But he was the most talented player at that position and despite a competent upperclassmen being ahead of him Florida still found a way to give him playing time. Eventually he got better with experience and closed the season strong.

If our receivers were 2022 good I'd be cool with bringing Mike Matthews along slowly. But we struggled at receiver this year and dealt with injuries. To me that's when you accelerate the growth process for a young guy rather than getting hung up on if he's ready. He's a freshman. He's not supposed to be ready. But if he's talented he can still help you. And that's what good coaches bank on. The young player giving you more good than bad.

Just cancelled some of my OnlyFans subscriptions and joined the Volunteer Club instead. Growth.

Something about "Butch Jones and Onlyfans subscriptions" just makes my skin crawl. With that being said, I'm glad to see a former coach going all in! That is quite a sacrifice!

Has she mentioned a goat or cow? Mine also mentioned a goat or cow. We live smack dab in the middle of the city…
No, fortunately in one of those rare moments she listened to reason. Now that I think about it, I'm sort of shocked.

The neighbors have a rooster 😐😑🫥 Additionally Id be the one getting up and doing all the chicken **** cleaning.

No thanks.

That’s exactly why I said no as well. We all know who’d be the chicken farmer in this house, and it’s not the one who wants the f**kers.

I'm sure this has already been discussed so apologies, but I saw the spillman chat thing that alledged the room all hated Kelsey Pope. Seems odd considering when he got promoted apparently everyone celebrated and looked to him as a big brother, but I digress..

My question is, is his one of the position coaches that has an expiring contract? I know Ekeler and Banks was, but pretty sure there is a third guy. Just wondering the likelyhood of us replacing the position coach prior to next season. If its as bad as spillman suggested, then it seems neccessary.

By Spillman, I mean Nate, of course.

Maybe one was supposed to be missouri???
SIAP, but I haven’t been on the board much since before the game. No idea about Michigan being on the list twice, and I know I’m a week late to chime in, but…

Erik Ainge said on his show the day before the game that he had talked with the person responsible for all of UT’s NIL contracts and our number was actually about $18M for this season. I don’t know if the rest of the numbers on that chart are off by as much, but that sure is a big difference. Erik also said that we tend to pay the team as a whole slightly more than other schools, but not as much to the top players, while Ohio State was paying a lot more to their top players, and less to the rest of the team.

I don’t buy that for a second. He’s one of our best recruiters. Probably most relatable to recruits outside of levorn. If they have a problem with him, it’s not because of not liking him.

Not saying the Spillman chat was 100% but there is a difference in being an off the field role vs full time position coach. Also if there is additional pressure and he became difficult to play under, made bad decisions, etc. That can happen to anyone and a reset is sometimes beneficial.
