Recruiting Football Talk VIII

They put on a good show, Luke Combs, Chris Stapleton and Shaboozy.........

Not a bad lineup
Had never heard of Shaboozey until he was the musical guest on SNL. Verdict? I listened to the musical performances without fast-forwarding…a ringing endorsement.

I was there. Sitting in endzone behind the Jeff Powell TD run. You could see it develop from the snap. Game over for Miami
I was there with 3 buddies. We had great seats on the 25 or 30 yard line. We stayed at the Hyatt right across the street. That road trip followed by the trip to watch the Miracle at South Bend are etched in my memory forever I hope

I don’t think anybody here disagrees that alcohol is a poison. I still stand by and agree with everything else I said, especially about the shi**y foods that Americans ingest

you’re free to disagree all you want
I never disagreed about certain foods being bad. My point was that alcohol has worse, and more immediate, negative side effects if the context is over-indulging in either...which is why I think it's a little bit of a false equivalence. Ultimately, what we think about either isn't really worth all this back and forth.

“What the hell, let’s see what happens.”

Probably not the best time for an ideological shift, especially considering that we are going skiing next week 🤠
Sounds awesome. Where you going if you don’t mind sharing?

I watched Bret's side of it, and it makes sense that he'd be really unhappy with what Shane and the cocks did.

To be brief, it sounds like there is an "unwritten" "rule" in NCAAF that on kickoffs, if the receiving team is going to fair catch, the entire receiving team will make a fair catch signal so that everyone on the coverage team knows it's a fair catch and doesn't mistakenly take a defenseless player's head off b/c they're not expecting the hit.

Bret says that it's been a sacred, ethics-based tradition for the safety of the players, and Shane betrayed it.

When they told Bret that Shane said he'd come across to make that "fair catch" sign at Shane, Bret laughed and said, "No. I was doing it to everyone on their sideline!"

If all that's true, I can see why Bret would make a big deal of it.

And if all that's true, Shane is just that much more of a creep, with his "Bret needs to check the rule book; we didn't break any rules."
Wait I totally missed that aspect of it. So, the Cocks return team did the fair catch sign on a kickoff and returned it anyway? Which might've resulted in one of Illinois's players getting hurt?

That's not an unwritten rule, I thought it was an actual rule. Weren't the Vols called for that last year when 1 guy on the return team made that "T" sign and we returned it anyway? Wasn't it called a penalty for returning after a fair catch signal?

That’s correct. It was a short kick and he wasn’t even calling a fair catch but was pointing at the ball in flight. Obviously officials didn’t know that. We received a penalty.

We didn’t make the T sign. Our guy pointed at the ball, and they reviewed it to say it was a fair catch signal. Even worse.

It's not the "actual" fair catch. It's where the player stands and puts each arm horizontally to their side. (See the pose that he took towards the SCjr sideline as example; that's what he was doing to call them out).

So, it's not an official fair catch sign that means the umps would call the play dead. It's a non-official signal that the entire receiving team takes to signal the coverage team "There will be no return; you will not be blocked; don't hit anyone".

(That's how he explained it in his presser.)

Instead, all the SCjr players made the signal so that the coverage team pulled off. Then everyone blocked the unexpecting coverage team, and the return guy apparently returned the ball for extra yards.

(I didn't see it. Just going off of what he said in his presser.)

If it's true, I have no problem with him signalling the other sideline to call them out. It's dangerous for everyone, in that moment and in potentially every future kickoff SCjr returns, as the opposing team can't trust the unofficial signal and have to make the choice between being hit/blocked when they pull back, or knock the hell out of someone that is taking a legit fair catch.

If all that was true Shane is a dooj-canoe. He's teaching his players to be unsportsmanlike doojes. And he deserved even more call-out.

Also, based on Shane's curt explanation of his anger, and the outrageous reaction on-field... He knew he'd pulled a major dooj-card, and he was just waiting to go unhinged if he were called on it.
