Recruiting Football Talk VIII

I have faith in Garner to have our DL ready. It's the OL I sweat especially after seeing Nico running for his life all season long. I would find a way to take as many OL from the portal as our numbers will allow. No faith at all in Ellarbee's evals and development skills and you know UT will get injuries where it can least afford them. So, yes, this kid is a want.
Just throwing it out there, but LSU's OL coach was a teammate of Heupel's at OU. Seems to recruit pretty well but could be that LSU is just easier to recruit to. And I have no idea how well his players have actually performed since I rarely watch LSU. More than anything, I just found the Heupel connection interesting.

Probably my Top 5:
LOTF
Fight Club
Snatch
12 Monkeys
The Assassination of Jesse James

But,

Seven
Inglorious Basterds
Sleepers
A River Runs Through It...all very very great, as well.
I'm confused about LOTF & A River Runs Through It
Which one is about some brothers, one who is rebellious and causes family problems, a son who marries a native American, corrupt local officials, and their dad who likes fly fishing in Montana during the prohibition period??

Yes.

While you are stating some legitimate concerns they seem a little extreme versus the reality of this season. We did struggle against top defenses in pass protection especially at tackle. For balance I would watch the tape of Oregons offensive line trying to block OSU (worse than us). Also watch the vaunted Georgia OL try in pass protection against Notre Dame. It’s definitely fair to question the fact that Ellarbee hasn’t started one of his HS recruits yet but that likely changes in 2025. Nico was also inexperienced and tended to hold the ball and be indecisive at times. Normal for a first year starter. We also did have the SEC offensive player of the year and led the SEC in rushing so there were also some really good things happening up front. In balance the results would suggest the coaching was well above average but not elite. Offensive line is also the hardest position to evaluate and teach. I’m just suggesting that firing Ellarbee and rolling the dice it would improve the actual results is far from a sure thing. Ellarbee also really understand our system.

As far as the DL, Garner is elite but his unit got killed against OSU. Georgia actually dominated them as well. I love Garner and hope he retires here but sometimes you just get beat in high level competition.

Not trying to call you out as concerns are legitimate but trying to bring some balance. If we are competing for a spot in the playoffs I will gladly take it. Maybe one year we will get hot and win it all.

Reading between the lines with all the portal talk about Nico and MM, both families seemed to get assurances from Heupel that the offense will change. My guess is Heupel is assuring that the offense will open back up next year with a much bigger passing attack. I hope that it is true. We need to get Nico to earn his money next year if we are going to make a deeper playoff run.

I have thought about this carefully. We need to keep Coach Banks. He knows how to work hand in hand with Josh and a tempo offense and I have a feeling we are going to see more of that. Part of the issue with tempo was some OL who couldn’t handle it. I hope we do not have to find someone willing to deal with that. Not extending him last year is why he feels under appreciated. It’s not a fan on an anonymous message board.

I'm gonna guess the perception that were too negative for expressing concern and frustration?
About things you do not have intimate knowledge about? Everyone gets upset and frustrated from time to time. It’s ok to express it. But when that’s all that is ever communicated with asinine takes, it is a troll issue or a person who is miserable. People do not accomplish greatness with or around those attributes and attitudes.

If assurances were made that the passing attack would open up, I hope they got details on how. It’s not like the offense hasn’t looked to push the ball downfield the last two years; it’s just been largely ineffective

Can I push back a little bit on Garner.
Yes, he’s fantastic.
But this season, while the line was great Against the run, I think we disappointed on the pass rush. And I’m not really sure why. tOSU was missing 2 oline starters and we never came close to pressuring Howard. Same with Georgia and a few other teams.

It would help if the pass rush involved more that 3 or 4 on a couple of plays. It's pretty easy to block from a numbers perspective. Five (or sometime six) will beat 3 or 4 more likely than not. You can tell how many people were bringing on a pass play by who's hand is in the dirt. That's not a Rodney Gardner problem imo.

CJH has stated on many occasions that our 4 man rush needs to “get home” more often.
Yes, we should have probably blitzed more but I was still disappointed at how infrequently our front 4 disrupted the QB

Mike Matthews alongside Boo Carter and potentially adding Amari Jefferson.

iu
Staley is as good as them all.

I think Heup said "Joey is only OC in title, I'm taking the reigns over and Landry is gonna be working on scouting to help us out"

Love Joey, but clearly not doing something right in OC duties... and it's not all about game day play calling. Chip Kelly is showing this CFP that prep is the most important part, in both games he's had that offense looking unstoppable to open the games against great defenses too. But the time things are adjusted the hole is already too deep because Ohio State's defense is also great so good luck coming back from 21+ down.
Great post. This X’s 1000

I agree with him and you there. This is more of a defense of Rodney Gardner. If four isn't getting home. Why not TRY to bring a LB or nickel to finally get home? There wasn't one instance against UGA or Ohio State where we even tried to adjust when four wasn't getting home.

Now that I think about it. When has the defense ever made in-game adjustments? It seems to me that CTB relied on CRG and his crew for his success and overcoming the glaring weaknesses on his position group (safeties). But when They were struggling getting home. They were hung out to dry.
