Recruiting Football Talk VIII

January 8, 2000

The year is 2000, at the end of the 1999 NFL season. It is the wildcard round. The Bills were the 5th seed and had the #1 defense in the league, and were coached by everyone’s current favorite football grandpa Wade Phillips. The Bills had made the playoffs 8 times in the past decade and were still looking for that Super Bowl win. The Titans were Nashville fresh, this being their third year in Nashville and the first under the new name. Despite being a devastating 13-3, the Titans were actually the 4th seed as they had lost the AFC Central to the 14-2 Jaguars. As far as wildcard matchups go, this was pretty good!

It was not the most enjoyable watch if you like offense. The first score of the game was a safety on the Bills. At halftime the Bills were in a 12-0 hole. Things looked bleak. Then things turned around and the Bills scored 13 unanswered points to go ahead. The Titans got the ball with 6 minutes left, managed to squeak into field goal range and score the go-ahead kick with 1:48 to go, setting the stage for what should have been the big heroic 2-minute drill by the Bills. They nailed a 41-yarder to go up 16-15 with 16 seconds left. Setup complete.

What’s 16 seconds? Kickoff would probably take anywhere from 4-10 seconds off the clock and the Bills were going to kick it a bit short to prevent a touchback. If the Titans got lucky on the runback they might have enough time for what, possibly two plays? Chances of victory are so slim in these moments and 99% of the time, you are already drinking the celebratory beer here anticipating the victory.

In a funny twist of fate, the Music City Miracle took 13 seconds. Although it took a while to confirm it as a lateral, which it is. Barely. It might be the slightest lateral in history, and only one camera angle really shows it. The game camera makes it look like a forward pass, but when you Zapruder the crap out of it with the best angle, you see the ball leaves Wycheck’s hands in an extended sidearm flick beyond the line, and Dyson has to lean a ways inward to actually catch the ball, just barely closer to the line then where it left. If Wycheck throws the ball normally instead of using that desperate sidearm flick, this play ends with the Bills winning. It’s so close, but the call was correct. Sorry Bills fans, it’s a lateral.

Anybody that watched Levis at UK should have known that he was not going to be in the pros long. Plus by taking Hooker, they may have encouraged UT fans to watch more. I haven't watched a Titans game since they snubbed Hooker, and don't ever plan too (not to mention they suck). ;) 😂😂😂
Not drafting a player just because he plays for the hone state team isn't a snub.

Other than that, your post is fair and they do suck lol

I’ll be upfront in that my knowledge of basketball pales to my knowledge of football. That being said, I have a problem with a coach being here as long as and having as much success as Barnes has had and yet we’re saying there’s a depth issue. Am I wrong in that mentality?
I think he got surprised by some of the player decisions which were odd, and then got unlucky on injuries. In the NIL era everyone seems to be thinner than they might prefer. Sure he could have taken another scholarship. That is fair discussion, but i don't think he was negligent.

I love Hooker. He helped UT get back on the map..........

But he's older, was coming off a major injury, and he's still the Lions 3rd string QB (just signed Bridgewater back who has coached HS football this year.)

Titan's should not have signed Levis, but Hooker wasn't/isn't a solution.

I don't agree. Hooker wouldn't be playing hero ball and making boneheaded decisions. Hooker didn't have the "ceiling" that Levis did, but he had a pretty high floor, imo, as a game managing QB.
I don't disagree. He also would have been killed though. Levis is built like a MLB and he still got injured multiple times and missed games.

That’s going to happen with injuries and a guy who decided to leave mid season. Barnes normally doesn’t play more than 8/9 anyway.

That is true. Of course Levis also holds on to the ball the longest in the league I believe. The pressure rate on Rudolf is half as much as it is on Levis.

But he's very reliable on 3rd down
And yet we threw to Webb and nimrod instead 😂🤣 this is my point…we’ve not used bru enough.when Hendon was here is when he played the best..after watching this season I just feel like they would much rather have him as a physical blocker but yet he’s the best WR we’ve seen in terms of yards after catch…dude doesn’t quit when he has the ball and fears nobody..we need that

Been saying this!! Common sense!

I just don't know why a player would sign this though. Maybe non-elite players and players that sign with non power 4 schools. But you can the bet the top 200 or so recruits ain't gonna sign this. They are gonna take their NIL deals (which are not going anywhere by the way) and they will bank on themselves.

Thoughts? Mine are mixed

At this point we kind of need him back if we don’t get a veteran wr from the portal. But I’d like to see it in limited capacity to get the youngins the experience they need. Also, I worry about us appearing one dimensional or too predictable when he’s in if he’s used mostly on running plays or only certain passing situations.

Love him. Hope we find a splash transfer instead. Trust the staff to make the right call here.
