Recruiting Football Talk VIII

That's it. I'm done with Vols basketball. On to Ice Hockey.

But seriously, the team could have just been 'spent' after the Arkansas game. Clearly, depth is a problem. As for Carr, still not sure why he's transferring. This would have been a perfect year for him to get some minutes and improve. Injury wasn't going to keep him out all year, right?
Biggest concern for me in the tournament is our depth. With the injuries and so few players who can give meaningful minutes, I worry we'll fade fast. Our starters will probably have more minutes played per game than just about anyone else in the tournament.

Last night was the 1st of several conference losses. UT will look silly in some games and in other games, UT will make other teams look silly.

Still sticking with 12-6 in conference and 26-6 overall. That’ll have UT in the mix for a 1 seed. The SEC is going to eat its own.
You are correct. But I feel like that will help prepare us for the NCAA tourney. Playing this caliber of a schedule will only make us better come March Madness. Go Big Orange!! #DustItOff

I don't believe that will have an effect on us. Coach Barnes is well known for having his players in tip top shape. Ask Grant Williams. They run their tails off in practice. That's why we are such a good defensive team. You can't play both ends if you don't have wind. Lots of teams only go 8-10 deep. Unless you are Coach Caldwell and sub in 5 every 3-4 minutes. Not a bad idea either. Has worked for us so far.

Not to be "that guy" but the Titans hired Carthon and got big props from the league for hiring a black GM. But he wasn't actually the GM it turns out. Brinker was the man behind the scenes running the puppet strings the whole time. Carthon was the face and did the hiring and firing that Brinker told him to. Now I know the Titans have to hit their diversity quota in interviews, but this is probably the first time a woman has been actually interviewed for an NFL GM position. Great for her, and she's probably very capable, but if they hire her she will absolutely be just another yes man for Brinker, again. It will be a feel-good story that Amy will cheer about but any failures she will get criticized and blamed for.

And honestly if I were her I'd turn down an offer. She WILL fail because the Titans are a mess and have horrid leadership and it will look poorly on women being in GM positions in the future. She'd be better off biding her time and hoping for a better franchise with more stability.

I assume at different times? I guess he received some punishment recently for it and transferred out of frustration?

No clue honestly. Just that each had some questionable behavior and there was obviously punishment handed down. Don't know if both got the same sort of "here's what you have to do" and DJ just bolted immediately and Carr hung around or what.

Also a few folks implied Awaka leaving was partly because of those 2 and what they had/were doing.

take it all with a grain of salt as it's me repeating what other posters said anyway

I think a lot of us were worried about depth before the season even started, as you said. And so far, nothing but bad luck on that front: injuries and a departure. Maybe luck will swing our way, going forward. If we have everyone available and in full health, we may be ok. Rick doesn't usually play more than what we'll have.

Horns down.

I think there's probably a little truth to some of it, but some doesn't add up.

I doubt Awaka left because of the behavior of 2 freshmen, especially guys who were being punished for their behavior (one thing if the coaches were letting it fly, but they obviously weren't). I'm sure Awaka had issues with it that might have contributed, but not the ultimate reason. You deal with that stuff on any team you're on. Awaka left because of Aidoo, not being made "the guy" and he got a good deal to go to AZ I'm sure.

DJ was obviously being punished all last season. Carr didn't seem to be getting punished, just wasn't in a major rotation. Seems more likely that DJ got in trouble earlier, and maybe Carr got himself into a little bit of trouble while recovering from injury. Coaches handed down a punishment. He left.

Maybe I'm wrong, but those scenarios seem to be more likely and fit together better in my head

I appreciate the work Bru has put in but he isn't a number 1 receiver. He is a 3 at best. If he comes back and accepts that role fine. Otherwise, time to move on.
If he's accepted that his injury will probably prevent him from having a long (or any) NFL career and decides to come back as a role player and blocking WR then becomes an assistant coach... sign. me. up.

Florida did something no other team has done yet and only a handful can do.

6'11" Condon - 26 mins, 12 rebounds 12 points
6'9" Haugh - 22 mins, 3 rebounds 7 points
6'9" Alexis - 10 mins, 3 rebounds 2 points
6'11" Chinyelu - 23 mins, 15 rebounds 4 points

They played 4 legit bigs 81 combined minutes (if you're good at math thats +1 minute over what the 4/5 spot offers) so they went the entire game with a 2 big lineup and even had 3 on the floor at times.

Igor and Felix both played 29 minutes, Cade could only go for 3... Dubar played 10 but was ineffective.

Good news is Texas only has one big over 6'7" that gets 10mpg or more. So we matchup with them better.
Bad news is the teams that have bigs over 6'9" are Bama 3, Kentucky 3, LSU 4

most the SEC has 2 bigs with size that play a good chunk of minutes, those few that got 3+ and play 'em will be tough for us all year I think.

True, but its a rare combination that a team can put them on the floor while a lid is on our basket simultaneously.

Most teams will need more strategy than just get bigs minutes to stop us

Idk, everything would have been fine and that size would not have mattered near as much if we could make a single wide open shot. Not worried about Texas at all.

Awaka was in the same class as Freddie and DJ so it wasn't just "2 freshmen" and I think it was a combination of Aidoo and these other locker room concerns and unfortunately I don't think we were going to push out all of them for him.

He's probably the only transfer I wish we still had right now. Big with a strong ability to rebound and willingness to get the bulk of his points in the paint. He has taken 71 shots for Arizona, only 2 were 3s.

Since Joe Milton went off the other day, he has been talked about a lot. The media never fails to also mention he played at Michigan. It's a trend I've noticed with former Vols who transferred here. They NEVER forget to mention the previous school. Like with Kamara, one redshirt year at Bama and they can't stop bringing that up lol

I know it's not just former Vols, but idk...been irking me a while.
