Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Can we also please for the love of the good lord move all the rich people that sit behind the players bench to behind the basket and put the students behind the players bench.

Those guys are never up and cheering. I get it, y’all are rich and can do whatever but get your ass off the seat and cheer or stay the hell home.

I’ve been saying this for years!

Hell, even if the students just get the first 10 rows surrounding the court itd make a big difference

Happy Wednesday

January 29, 2025: When your days get hectic, take a deep breath, and settle your soul. What you are worried about will become a thing of the past shortly. Be patient and continue to walk in faith that I am with you and for you, and you can rely on the Lord. This has been a valley of shadows, but breakthrough is imminent. Psalm 23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

Just hate us losing when we're missing open shots. And despite Kentucky having a crazy night themselves 50% FG & 3PT that's what it came down to.

We lost by 5...shot 45 3s though, we usually hit at 34% if we do that that would be 15 of 45 from deep and adding 12 more points.

The positives are Igor looked really good, Chaz shot better (30% is obviously not his best, but he had the most difficult night getting clean looks) and ZZ wasn't injured.

The negatives, Gainey missing shots and leading the team in turnovers. Dubar taking far too many 3s when he often had the best 1 on 1 to drive to the rim. Not trying to force enough interior shots with Cade and Felix. Can't just try to lob to them, if they get 1 on 1 gotta give them touches to see how teams help (or don't) and then see if either can take advantage.

I think Saturday the team will come out and play better. This is the first 7 day stretch we've had since December where we weren't traveling. And we don't travel until next Saturday. It's also the last stretch where we get 2 games at home back to back...need to win both.

upset Florida
beat Missouri
win at Oklahoma
upset at Kentucky
beat Vandy

Then you have a week before playing at A&M... get to that matchup going 5-0 or 4-1 this next 5 games and we're right where we want to be to end the season.

Fun fact:

My wife gave birth to our 1st child in the same L&D room at UT Medical Center that Pat Summitt gave birth to Tyler. Our nurse called it the "Pat Summitt suite". My wife was enduced, so I was plenty nervous before hand but after I heard that we were in a special suite, I sure didn't want to let Coach Summitt down. I watched him crowning, "rolling out", and then I cut that umbilical cord like a champ. I felt like I was cutting down the nets at the national championship. It was an awesome day. That little turd is getting married later this year.

Dubar shot 40% from 3 the last 2 seasons. He can make those. Would be awesome if he’d start doing so.

But If anybody took too many, it was ZZ. I’d add him going 1-11 from 3 as a negative. And someone that Pope prob wanted shooting. His career 3P% is 32%.

He’s due tho. Shooting 6% from 3 over the last 2 games (1-17) and is 2 for his last 20 from downtown.

I mean to me the at Vandy is really the only "bad" loss and it's honestly not a bad loss at all...They're 16-4, 3 SEC losses one vs Miss State, at Mizzou, and at Bama. Them losing to Drake early in the year isn't even a bad look since Drake is 18-2 and Vandy was playing just their 7th game together.

SEC is a tough league... South Carolina looks like the only truly bad team and even then a case can be made they're not that bad...lost to Florida by 1, lead the entire game until the last possession by the Gators. Miss State had to beat them in OT, lost at Vandy by 1 possession, lost to Auburn by 1 possession. But they've also had some games where they got flat out cooked. Indiana beat 'em by 16, at Miss State they lost by 35, Bama got 'em by 20, at OU they lost by 20...

Most the pretty level headed basketball folks were saying 12-6 would be a "best case" season... 10-8 seemed to be the more realistic expectations...

4-4 right now with 10 left to play and only 4 games remain against top 15 teams and 2 of those will be played at TBA.... still have every chance to finish as a top 4 SEC team.

Yeah honestly 21 games into the season here are my biggest take aways.

Chaz Lanier = great addition, still an A portal get IMO
Best year at NF = 19.7 ppg, 51% FG, 44% 3PT, 4.8 rpg, 1.8 apg, 0.9 spg
This year at UT = 17.8 ppg, 41% FG, 42% 3PT, 3.1 rpg, 1.0 apg, 1.1 spg

Igor Milicic Jr = good addition, a B portal get IMO (if his 3pt % was better he'd be an A)
Best year at Charlotte = 12.8 ppg, 48.7% FG, 37.6% 3PT, 8.5 rpg, 1.7 apg, 0.7 spg
This year at Vols = 10.4 ppg, 46.1% FG, 28.4% 3PT, 8.1 rpg, 2.1 apg, 0.7 spg, 0.6 bpg

Felix Okpara = good addition, an A portal get
Best year at OSU = 6.6 ppg, 58.5% FG, 6.4 rpg, 2.4 bpg
This year at Vols = 7.3 ppg, 60.6% FG, 6.5 rpg, 1.7 bpg

Darlinstone Dubar = been disappointing, currently a D (missed time and isn't playing as many minutes or else he'd be an F)
Best year at Hofstra = 17.8 ppg, 53.9% FG, 40% 3PT, 6.8 rpg, 1.4 apg, 1.2 spg, 0.9 bpg
This year at Vols = 3.9 ppg, 40% FG, 26.3% 3PT, 2.6 rpg, 0.4 apg, 0.3 spg, 0.1 bpg

So 75% success rate on the transfers...

Gainey is playing better in every way this year compared to last, A grade
ZZ is obviously the heartbeat of this team, but offensively he's forcing the issue way too much and his % are all down (except at FT line) his turnovers are also the highest of any season... C+
Mashack more minutes, still an elite defender and his numbers on offense are all better BUT to be on the court as often as he is we need him to do more... he's 3rd in MPG but 6th in PPG... just a B
Cade is an A+ imo with JP going down and Dubar being a letdown him stepping up is why we're sitting at 17-4 right now if he hadn't gotten that shoulder injury I wonder if some outcomes would be different
Bishop didn't expect much...haven't gotten much the only baffling thing to me is how was he a top 100 player...TBD at this point

Boswell doesn’t surprise me. A ton of dudes ranked ahead of him in rankings that don’t play also. Bama alone has a guy averaging like 2 points and another that hasn’t played.

Cut? A real possum would've chewed through that sucker.

They grow up fast. Congratulations on gaining a DiL! May they bring you many fine grandkids.

True, but with our short bench and Carr doing what he did Boswell likely has far more opportunity to get on the court than the guys ranked higher than him.
