Recruiting Football Talk VIII

We need to get healthy for that to be a possibility...... Think that's a tall order in the meat of the SEC schedule. Tough to do. Hope we can.

Yep...after Vandy on the 15th we get our off midweek break and don't have to play until Saturday at A&M, but then quick turn around to play at LSU the following Tuesday...

2 of our last 3 games are in TBA though, but the first is Bama

SEC is just much improved and a grind this year...10 wins or better would be pretty amazing with the short bench we have and health.

But March 8th is last regular season game...and there's usually a week before SECT and then another week after that before tournament starts. Might be a year where 1-1 in SECT benefits us more than a deep run...

I'd much rather tank the SECT this year. Our guys legs are going to be noodles by the end of the season.

Unless us winning SECT or playing in Championship game gives us a 1 seed I would also agree.

We won't "tank" but Barnes for sure should use the SECT to play Dubar, Bishop and Cade more minutes and give ZZ, Chaz, and Gainey sub 28 minutes

Yep, I think Igor honestly would be the one player that would benefit the most getting another year.

ZZ is great and an elite PG, but he isn't going to take major strides...unless a 2nd ball handler can be added to allow him more opportunities to catch & shoot (like when KC was here)
Mashack and Gainey are both pretty much where they're going to be...both would contribute though and be key pieces but don't know if either has a big jump in production

Igor though...would be able to go into an off-season fully aware of where he needs to improve and how he needs to train for SEC play. Could return and be a dominate big with Felix beside him
Agree. Think Igor is the only guy on the team with NBA upside. One more season with some refinement offensively and I think he could play himself into the first round.

Yeah, 6'10" and if he was a 16 & 10 guy shooting 35% or better from deep in the SEC then I think he'd get drafted as well. His game unlike Broome will translate a lot better to NBA cause he plays better in space.

"bully ball" for bigs is pretty rare in the NBA these days.

I do think it's legitimate to critique Barnes for allowing his players to shoot themselves into a loss.

I really don't care that they are open and I disagree with the belief that you should keep shooting them if they are open.

The players are in their heads, they don't have confidence and they WILL NOT shoot themselves out of it. It literally never happens. If we are cold, we are cold and it does not change during a game ever. Basketball is a momentum sport. You HAVE to go inside when you're not hitting 3's. Especially not 45 of them. It's dumb. Run some pick and rolls, maybe some flex actions to get guys looks inside and get them into a rhythm.

But every coach has some philosophies that just don't work and they won't budge. Allowing them to keep shooting and refusinf to call timeouts when the other team makes a run are his vices. We are still in the greatest era of Tennessee basketball and we can't really complain though. We will turn it around and we will go on a tournament run.

As a football school, I'm taking that all day.

Agreed, but unfortunately, we don't really have great 'drivers' to the basket. We've seen that Gainey and Lanier can create shots closer to the basket however. With Kentucky, they sagged back making it hard to drive and daring us to shoot threes. Yes, though, schemes should help get those shots.

I never really try to critique Barnes publicly. As a coach myself, I know that there are things he sees every day in practice that we won't ever see and he's making decisions off that.

That being said...the possession he came out of the timeout with 1:30 left and left Lanier and Milicic on the bench (Gainey dribbled off his foot this possession), I was truly baffled. We were down 5, and you went with Ziegler, Maschack, Phillips, Gainey, & Okpara there. I did/do not understand the thinking there.

Didn't we recently win the SECT and our NCAA seed did not rise, but lose first round in the SECT and our seed did drop?

Yeah they are daring us to shoot, but if it never works you gotta try something else.

Have to be way more physical. Draw fouls, send everyone to glass and if you can make easier shots then that usually translates to better shooting from the outside.

Barnes has called more time outs this year to stop runs.

In Baseball’s first Hall of Fame class, Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, Honus Wagner, and Babe Ruth were inducted as five of the finest players of the era controlling the election ballots in 1936.

I agree with you. We need to adopt the idea of load management through the end of the season. We CAN beat anyone. However, as the last two games have demonstrated, we are dead tired by the last 5 minutes of game time. Offense stagnates, can't create shots, when someone is open for a shot it looks god awful because their legs are gone and they basically have ghost-limb arms.

I don't think Barnes has it in him to even entertain the idea of something like load management. It's the edge and intensity that has made him who he is, reenergized our bball program, and gotten us this far. Can't blame him.

If the goal is to do damage in March, we have to account for that now. If we just want to go out there and play to our identity as a Barnes team every game this season, I don't think we'll be much of a factor in the SEC or NCAA tournaments. Depth has caught up to us and will continue to limit our ceiling.

Wish Rick wasn’t so picky about the portal. One more portal commit and we would be fine.

That’s my only negative about him.

knowing what we know now, I'd imagine everyone wishes we would have taken at least one more

the problem is, at the time, he was trying to manage personalities, promises, rotation, etc

his roster changed on him after he made his plan. now what?
