Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Well, my Pawpaw passed away this morning.

Former Vol from 1963-65

Was part of that first group to run through the T and helped Dickey to get the Vols back to relevance.

He was a colorful character and hilarious. I'll always cherish his football stories. They meant a lot to me as a kid and still do. Hanging out with him and the Swamp Rat lol.

RIP and Go Vols!

Really seems like we always get the short end, better overall record than Bama and own the Head to Head....but they leap frog us after going 1-1 the same week we go 1-1.

But a few folks in the Basketball forum have been speculating since we lost to Ole Miss "they'll put us in Duke's bracket regardless" and sure starting to seem that way. But the buzz seems to be they'll try to put us in a geographical bracket that makes the most sense, so East or South are most likely whether we're the #5 overall seed or not.

Unless we win the SECT and get the 4th 1 seed I think we're stuck in Duke's bracket. The biggest confusing part is why Michigan State wasn't put in the Midwest and Bama in the South.

Conference affiliations is also a factor, they’re going to avoid putting a 1 and 2 seed from the same conference together and that throws the locations off. (And now the beginning locations aren’t actually tied to region not sure how much importance they place on location compared to the other things they try to avoid)

Yeah also true... 2 1 seed SEC teams and neither has a 2 seed SEC team. Still we drew the harder 1 seed with them sliding Bama ahead of us on the 2 seed line. Big surprise there.

So very sorry for your loss.

It's rough man. Have lost both of mine now as well as my father and father-in-law. Hurts my heart thinking my son (11) won't have any of those stories from Papaw to cherish.

I'm responding to these, but the message is to all participating in this conversation...I've done some research that might help inform this...AI is actually super useful for this...

The committee only really looks at the 1 seeds when determining sweet sixteen/elite eight region (geographically, they will keep them close if possible, or split the difference if both are further away).

For 2-4 seeds, they'll put together advantageous first and second round locations where possible, but not beyond.

With regards to conferences with a lot of teams (like the SEC this year), they will position them such that no SEC team can face another SEC team up to the regional final (Elite Eight). All regions have 1 seeds, and 2 seeds, and 3 seeds, and so forth, so we shouldn't worry about there being "too many 1 seeds" or "too many 2 seeds" from the SEC, because they can still be spread out to other regions (even if there were four 3-seeds as an example). This logic holds up until there are more than 8 teams from a conference, after which there have to be situations where SEC could play SEC.

And, let's remember the AP Poll is a poll of 60+ media members strictly ranking their best, and not that of a dedicated committee following a set of bracketing guidelines. Positions 5 thru 8 are very very close in votes in the AP Poll. From what I remember, 2 of the main rankings that the committee uses to seed teams is NET (Tennessee is 5th) and KPI (Tennessee is 4th). That is where we should be most focused, rather than on what the average media person might think, when trying to project out where our tournament seed will be.

My opinion based on what I've learned from research on bracketing (bracketology?) is we are very safely a 2-seed, and will likely play closer to home for the first 2 rounds, and it's a toss-up where we'll be for the S16/E8.

Was watching a NF show few weeks back with my girls. Heard a cartoon voice, and thought. Wow, that's strange. That sounds like exactly like Winnie from Wonder Years.

Little googles later. Sure enough. She owns a company that advances science and math for young kids, ladies specifically. Thought that was pretty cool.
