Carbohydrates are eventually broken down through digestion to glucose (with fiber being the exception), which is sugar. The danger is not in sugar consumption, per se, but more in line with how easy it is to consume too much carbohydrate in the processed form of sugar through hyper palatable foods, sodas, juices, etc.
When eating in energy balance and carbohydrates are not being stored by the body, but rather oxidized as a fuel source, sugar is fine. If you are eating in a way that does not account for your total caloric intake and your calories are too high as a result of high sugar (or anything else) consumption, then you will possibly begin to see negative health outcomes.
