There’s a serious disconnect between the stock market and the broader national/international economy and people’s every day lives.

We’ve got a higher unemployment rate than during the Great Depression. The Dow going up doesn’t mean ****.

DOW is going up because of all the talk of opening the country back up.

Sure, but how many people died from it 1) before we knew what it was and 2) before we had widespread testing?

There are multiple factors that suggest the count may be overestimated and underestimated.

If more did die, and I think they did from this AND would’ve anyway because of their other issues then we really over reacted because it was here and normal living and dying didn’t change. 70k sounds a lot to you but for most of your life that’s a normal 8-10 day cycle for the last decade.

I have noticed locally with regard to restaurants that the most successful ones continued that with drive up business. Those already struggling are the ones that may not make it. I don’t know about novelty retail.

But notice that the national businesses that have declared bankruptcy were already on verge of it.

Also, if the small business owner was able to get PPP money, then that will mitigate any loss and keep everyone on payroll.

^^^ Gets it. The points you made in reverse order...

3) 100% factual. PPP gives the small business the ability to make all or part of the loan into capital instead of debt. The balance sheet becomes more viable for future lending/expansion as the business returns to profitability. The bank gets to make a loan and earn a bit of interest with no allocation (loan loss reserve) required against its capital as the loan is 100% guaranteed. Its customer gets through the period and bounces back faster, solidifying the banking relationship, which makes the bank more money long term.

2) Spot on. They had insufficient liquidity and business activity to sustain any type of downturn. Most had too much debt on their balance sheet.

1) They wanted to maintain their brand. Most had put a lot of time and effort into building a successful brand and operation. In doing so they built a liquidity reserve, did not have too much debt to service, did not over expand in good times, and planned for rainy days. They probably are not top heavy in management. By offering drive-up they maintain the core customer base, retain core staff, and keep the appearance of a viable business within the markets they serve. It applies to retail as well as restaurants. Those that had committed to strong IT/social media presences actually have built even stronger brand awareness for kicking off the opening of the economy. They will win big time.

FWIW - this is in my wheelhouse.

I like it. I’ve been looking at that or Goalrilla.
Wasn’t that expensive. Academy had several installers to chose from. After I had a nightmare about my attempt at installing ending a severely tilted goal in solid concrete, I happily paid someone else to do the install. Wasn’t as much as I thought it would be and was worth the peace of mind. 🏀

I agree that the dow isn't a great indicator of where the economy is but it is an indicator of where investors see the economy going. It all depends on what happens with this virus. If we see another outbreak and another shutdown it definitely will trend down. If things continue to open up, those unemployment numbers will fall drastically. Most of the layoffs are temporary and many were forced by the government. I've got all my guys back and are planning on hiring 2-3 more.

we bought one at Academy sporting goods. Height adjustable. Have had it for 10 years and it is still rock solid...my wife and son have both backed vehicles into it...

Is that a goalrilla? That's very similar to mine but I fabricated it myself. It's about 25 years old now and solid as a rock. The backboard is not in the best of shape as it has some chips and the painted box and stuff are faded. Rim is a little rusty and the actual steel could use a paint job. Hardly used any more so I may sell it.

I'm tired of the virus talk, but I thought this was too interesting not to post. I'd be interested in the take of a few of you here. In the meantime, if this is true, and as best I can tell it's legit, kudos to CDC for acknowledging some of these deaths aren't truly Covid deaths, rather deaths with Covid. Second thing, shame on CDC and media for hiding this and not publicizing it. Note the categories on the chart.

Yep. When something like this is happening, accurate data is absolutely critical. If people are knowingly falsifying or misrepresenting it, that is incredibly shameful.
