OK, yes. Should Gundy have a consequence from wearing that DA shirt?
This is my concern. Where do you stop? America has always been about freedom to say and write whatever you want even if it is offensive (because everything offends someone). I agree you will suffer the consequences when people do not like what you say or write or in this case what you wear. But when we start demanding people have to have group think, even when I agree with them, we have gone too far.Is there a limiting principle to all of this? Without getting into an argument about whatever “OAN” is, I’m not sure I can see one yet in the midst of our current cultural realignment.
For example, I think I heard that Texas got wind of vandalism threats to the Alamo over the weekend. In light of this, should Pruitt take care not to wear gear that sports “The Rifleman” logo?
And I’m not trying to be flippant or argumentative; I’m really curious as to where we would draw the line if this was our house on fire and not OSU’s.
That is a scary thought. The path beyond offense is to gain immunity to it.
Immunity to offense comes from exposure to, and learning to deal with, offensive people.
Attempting to eliminate offense produces the opposite result. Think "Bubble Boy", where the common cold causes death.
The ultimate expression of offended-ness is radical Islam, where a cartoon can result in riots and death.
That is our future if we don't figure this out.
It's a good point, I don't know the answer. OSU worked it out. I was more arguing against the people who were criticizing the RB who got offended. Is there a limiting principle to all of this? I got excited when I saw "offense." I thought it would be another JG discussion. The path beyond offense is to gain immunity to it.
