I think they are but there's more. I happened to just have been working on an in depth comparison of our two teams (Tennessee & Georgia) which I'll post here:
I’m assuming fall camp is now over. If you recall Pruitt said we would carry fall camp into the first two weeks of the season due to having so many guys miss the regularly scheduled fall camp due to quarantines. I make note of this because our starters on the defensive line were I think an unexpected group. I think most observers were looking for Solomon, Emerson, and Middleton to be the likely starters, primarily because, well, they were the primary returning starters. Instead we have had Simmons, Bumphus, and Butler. There could be something more than the quarantines at play here but I suspect not. All three of last year’s primary starters on the DL saw some action against Missouri. I think they may see a lot more action this week. Even Garland has been bumped from the starting lineup, a role he had for a number of games last season. The guys we’ve been starting have actually done a pretty good job though Simmons may have been injured a bit in the Missouri game. We play a lot of guys on the DL so I think it will be interesting to see which of the guys have the more snaps this week. jmo.
We pretty much know what we have at linebacker. Henry is the QB and he starts at what is listed as the Will but I think it’s the common Mike position. Crouch has been starting at what we list as the MLB. I think Pruitt calls it the Money. I think it’s actually the common Will. Bennett has been the starter at SAM which for us I think that’s the Edge guy. It's sort of funny that Deandre doesn't even start yet is winning accolades. jmo.
In the back end we started Slaughter at Star against SC but swapped him with Bryce at some point, Bryce having started at SS against SC. At Star against MO we started Theo. Alontae started both games at CB and George was listed as the starter at the other corner against SC. Bryce was listed opposite Taylor as the other starting corner against MO but he only played I think on 3rd downs or in spots. The other safety starter against SC was Trevon and he also started against MO. He was joined by Jaylen for the MO game.
On paper there’s not a lot of talent difference between our starting DL and Georgia’s starting DL. The same is true at linebacker. Across the board there’s just not a lot of difference, on paper. I don’t even think there’s a lot of difference in class between the front seven starters. Georgia’s edge would likely be in depth for the front seven. I think we have the advantage talent-wise at Mike but they have a senior. They have Dean, a SO, where we have Crouch or Banks. On the edge they have Ojulari. Their front seven is pretty stout but I think it’s biggest strength is probably the depth behind the starters. jmo.
The real strength of Georgia’s defense is its secondary. Where we have 5-stars galore on our offensive line, Georgia has 5-stars galore manning the back end of their defense and none of the starters are freshmen. Of course Georgia also has tremendously talented depth behind those starters. It’s my understanding that if you have the guys in the backend who can play man defense that gives you more leeway to both stop the run and pressure the quarterback. That is why some say the secondary is the most important position group on the defensive side of the ball. jmo.
So while Georgia has more talent on the roster (paper-wise) than we do right now, only 11 guys can get on the field at any given time. Their advantage, aside from their secondary, appears to all be in their depth. They don’t have a lot of drop off when rotating guys and they can rotate guys at every position though from a production standpoint, their starters dominate. jmo.
Both our defense and theirs have recorded 5 sacks through 2 games and our opponents I’d argue were of similar capability. We’ve recorded 14 total TFLs; Georgia has had 10. We are +1.50 in turnover margin; Georgia is +1.00. We’ve had 9 total penalties in all phases of the game for 70 yards; Georgia has been penalized 20 times in their first two games for 167 yards. In fact they are the most penalized team in the conference at this point.
Again, given that we’ve faced similar opponents, I think the comparisons of our performances are informative. Against Arkansas Georgia gave up 2.75 yards per rush attempt. Against Auburn they gave up 1.77 yards per attempt. We gave up 2.54 yards per attempt to South Carolina and 3.41 per attempt to Missouri. The passer rating for Franks against Georgia was 97.51; for Nix it was 84.67. Collin Hill was at 129.89 against us and Bazelak was at 139.59. We’ve had 7 QBH; Georgia has had 3. We’ve had 4 PBUs and Georgia has had 8.
Through our first two games we’ve rushed for 4.35 yards per attempt; Georgia has rushed for 3.71 yards per attempt. We’ve had 6 rushing touchdowns; Georgia has had 3. Guarantano’s passer rating is 143.18 while Bennett’s is 148.74. Guarantano has passed for 2 TDs; Stetson 3. Passing yardage per game for both of these quarterbacks is almost exactly the same. Both teams have given up 4 sacks. We’ve given up 7 TFLs while Georgia has given up 6.
Our offense has scored a total of 8 TDs plus 1 pick-six from our defense. Georgia’s offense has scored a total of 6 TDs plus 1 pick-six from their defense. With field goals we’re 1 for 3; Georgia is 4 for 5. We’re 9 for 9 on PATs; Georgia is 6 for 6. We’re averaging 33.0 points per game; Georgia is averaging 32.0 points per game. We’ve put 6 of 8 punts inside the 20 yard line; Georgia has put 6 of 9 punts inside the 20. 8 of our 12 kickoffs have been touchbacks and 7 of Georgia’s 12 kickoffs have been touchbacks.
We have the better head coach, the better offensive coordinator, the better defensive coordinator, and the better fanbase. #WGWTFA
