Who out of our previous realistic candidates going back to 2009 would have actually done well here long-term?

I think Patterson and Kelly are about it. Even Cut would have been fired by now. What's sad is we could have had Patterson or Kelly in late 2008 because the job was still really good.
Patterson is probably the only one. Maybe Cut.

But in today’s game, no one is sticking around somewhere for a decade.

I just want to speak this semi-realistic coaching carousel into existence:
Pruitt and Fuente are fired from their prospective programs on the same day.
Todd Grantham is hired to replace Fuente (he’s a VT alum)
Fuente is hired at UT to replace Pruitt.
Pruitt is hired as Florida’s DC to replace Grantham.

I don’t want to tell you what this scenario does to UT’s recruiting, specifically on the defensive side.
Pruitt gets fired and he is on Bamas staff the next week.

I like the idea of Freeze just for the reason Tennessee would almost instantly be feared by conference rivals.
But Tom Herman interests me. I mean, it worked with the last coach we took from UTjr. I think that place is more of a dumpster fire than we are.
Freeze, Campbell, Fickell or Herman

any of those should be our next coach.

All coach discussion leads back to Freeze for me. Knows TN, runs a high powered offense, has beaten Bama twice (and nearly 3x in a row), does more with less. It's a no-brainer. The only reason that call doesn't get made is because of egos or gun-shy admins who are afraid of his baggage (and who will feel the sting of watching him pummel us from another SEC sideline in the near future).

The the ones who write the checks were OK with Schiano, they should be OK with Freeze.

Huge... already has recruiting locked up in Memphis

Yup... It's so obvious

One thing is for certain if Pruitt is back next year we’ve got to get rid of this 1980s offense we run. If he holds this class together he will have 3 years of quality talent on this roster. No excuses.
His offense is 90% of the reason I think he will fail here. That style isn't successful at the top anymore

Yep, Bama went away from it after Freeze showed Saban there is a new wave of offense and UGA gets away with it because of all the talent they have but they’ll never win a national championship because of it.

Yep, I don't blame this all on Chaney either. His offense didn't look like this his first time here, at Arky and it wasn't this bland at UGA. Pruitt needs to change ASAP

Here’s my honest question: Is he so far and away the candidate most likely to have success that you’re willing to overlook the baggage?

Or, is it just easy to dismiss that stuff as not a big deal from the outside?

Agree. Wish Tennessee had this mentality to go for the best.
What if they have and been rebuffed? Usually no fanbase hears of the proceedings leading up to an actual proposal. You send feelers out and proceed or don’t. We’ve heard constantly how Bama courted Saban and didn’t stop until they landed him. Would we have heard that if he had said no...like Rich Rodriguez or Bobby Bowden or...?
