Who out of our previous realistic candidates going back to 2009 would have actually done well here long-term?

I think Patterson and Kelly are about it. Even Cut would have been fired by now. What's sad is we could have had Patterson or Kelly in late 2008 because the job was still really good.
Patterson is who I wanted the last 2 coaching hires. I think he would have done well here, he would have probably won 2-3 division titles and maybe 1 SEC championship. He's had some PR trouble at TCU since we've hired Pruitt and is probably ready for a change of scenery. I think he'd be a good hire but I want a head coach that's had success in the SEC.

I honestly think our expectations diminish considerably if Pruitt is retained (which I do think happens). I know I will have very little optimism going into next season. But what NEEDS to happen over the off-season to instill some hope?

Defense:
- bring in Bo Davis (or equivalent)
- move on from Ashley, bring in Muschamp (that hurts to type, but I think he & Pruitt are tight)
- move Neids back to TE/recruiting coordinator.
- hire a legit LB coach (not sure who is realistic/friends with Pruitt).

Offense:
- fire Chris Weinke inside TBA and charge for tickets to throw tomatoes at him!
- for Will Friend (I doubt this happens unfortunately since he's Pruitts BFF).
- if JG does want to return, set his helmet on fire and stop returning his calls. DONE!!!!
- Chaney isn't going anywhere, but something needs to change with play calling (I'm a fan of Chaney, but he does get predictable).

Here’s my honest question: Is he so far and away the candidate most likely to have success that you’re willing to overlook the baggage?

Or, is it just easy to dismiss that stuff as not a big deal from the outside?
I look at it as PERSONAL “baggage” in which I have no personal interest. If his wife and family got over it, why would it be an insurmountable hill for us?

I’m not worried about getting in trouble with the NCAA or the SEC. I’m really not.

What I’m worried about is getting in trouble and not winning at a level to feel good about it.

I don’t think Freeze is the sure thing you guys think he is, and that’s fine, just a difference of opinions.

If we were talking about a guy who had won the SEC a time or two or made the playoffs, I’d be more inclined to think there’s no chance he could fail.

Well, yeah, that’s a fine example and kinda what I’m getting at. Will Wade hasn’t won anything. So has it been worth it for LSU? Or do they wish they would have taken a shot with someone else?
There was a reason the job was available. Previous guy didn’t win enough. Not sure who they passed on who would drive them to drink and wishing.

At Ole Miss?

Saban couldn’t even do that

Who’s floating the “no chance to fail” tag line? We’re looking at the LESS chance angle. Jackie Sherrill had violations at every stop before Mississippi State. He made every one of those programs better than when he arrived. Catch a Pitt Panther or Aggie alumnus on a good day and I doubt they feel bad about his hire.

The list of coaches who have beaten Saban twice at Bama is pretty short. That doesn't make it a sure thing, but I like it better than what we've had. Zero chance he gets in NCAA trouble. Our support system is well developed. His hands would stay clean.
From what I can gather, a lot of Freeze’s problems are related to the fact that Ole Miss couldn’t reign him in to a certain extent and they became increasingly irritated by his attitude and antics.

Now, maybe he’s learned his lesson and will be smarter, but if I were Fulmer, I’d be calling down to Oxford and listening to everyone who was there while he was - if you can’t work with him, you can’t hire him.

Yeah, I think it was Meyer, Miles, Dabo, Malzahn, and Freeze and I think that was it. May have missed one.
