Playoff created this. Best players go to teams with highest percentage chance of getting to the playoffs by winning their conference every year. SEC could luck up and get 2 in so more of the best players are willing to go to the 2 or 3 other teams that are not AL.

I actually ran the numbers comparing BCS and CFP, and they are hardly any different. Every decade, there's essentially a handful of teams that have a legitimate chance of competing, and 1 or 2 teams that come out of nowhere for 1 or 2 years (LSU, Tennessee). Some teams enter the fray (Clemson) and some leave (Miami, FSU). CFP hasn't changed anything.

We think it's worse now because of the changing baselines. We quickly forget that the biggest argument for the CFP was the argument just made against it. That the BCS system caused all the best players to go to the handful of schools with a legit shot.

A lot of people got suckered into the Gruden deal, even John Pennington (though he would deny it now).
