Recruiting Forum Football Talk III

I agree. I also think it’s more to do with his core defensive philosophy.

Press man outside and exotic blitzes, particularly from the second level. If you don’t have a great or elite pass rush off your front 5 alone then neither of these are possible.

It’s no different then Pete Carroll’s. It’s nearly impossibly to play that cover 3 unless you have a great pass rush in front of it.

Are we even playing much press man outside?

Yeah man. I mean I think it's pretty clear we have some decent amount of talent. Not world beaters but good enough to beat UK for gods sake... The question is mostly about coaching, development, and personnel decisions... all of which have been pretty weak.
its sad, when trying to talk up our offense i have to use the word "if" so many times.

Is there a chance that the AD thinks no announcement is needed to confirm Pruitt will be back and just lets things move forward as is? With the move in video including Pruitt, him flying with Steele, and the continued incoming transfers, it seems clear Pruitt will be back, but no firm statement from the AD....? Could they think it’s not needed?

truth is our defense this year wasn’t that “bad” compared to much of the SEC.
I guess when you compare our defense to Vandy and other low tier SEC schools, it probably is ok. Jerimy Pruitt came here with the reputation of being an elite defensive mind. He's not. He's very average and no better than any other defensive coordinator in the league. He was supposed to be an elite recruiter as well and he's pretty average there too. He does nothing really well. Nothing that warrants him being the head coach at the university of Tennessee.

There's bad defenses and then there are bad defenses. This past years defense was one rung above the Sunseri defense. He's never had to field a defense with average talent. His success has been built on the backs of five star players. That's ok if you can recruit at that level but he can't do that at TN.
We were a top 30 defense the previous season..... although not great we were writhinn 27 yards allowed of being the fourth best defense in the sec.

Cheif had better defenses than Wilcox without a doubt but Wilcox got more out of his talent than chief did
I love how folks do everything in their power on here to discredit anything positive that guys like Fulmer and Chavis did in their careers. Talking about guys who dedicated a large part of their adult lives to this university, and had a lot of success doing it.

ANd year three should be improvement, not digression. And we continuously gave up monstrous big plays that cost us games. Had BYU on the ropes and and gave that one away. He's average DC at best. He may survive this year. He may survive next year when we go 6-6 and Fulmer declares "TN is back, baby!" He will never be successful here.

Im leading toward him staying now, but still don’t think it has been decided 100%. To answer question: Yes, they are that tone deaf.

here you go.

6 SEC teams gave up more PPG than Vols

5 SEC teams gave up more yards than Vols

3 SEC teams gave up more pass yds than Vols

9 SEC teams gave up more rush yds than Vols

Compared to the most of the SEC his defense wasn’t any worse. We were a middle of the pack average defense in a league full of bad ones

Defense has become about 3 stats...

Plays given up over 20 yds
3rd down efficiency
Red zone td allowed

Offenses are going to get yds. I would actually argue that this is one Pruitt’s strong suits. I think he knows these are the keys to successful D in today’s game. That’s why he speaks to them so much.

I watched a great lecture by Sark explaining his RPO offense at a coaching clinic , and it was fascinating listening to explain the logic behind it. Part of the theory was to engineer explosive plays. Then he stopped and said, “everyone in this room knows how hard it is to get a bunch of boys to execute plays perfectly ten or eleven times in a row.”

Made me think of your “20+yard” category.

The coup attempt failed so I can definitely see Phil sit back and act like everything is under control, nothing to see here...

I'm still waiting for someone to explain to me why they think the Tennessee athletic department would go after Kiffin. He gets brought up continuously, but I can't see that happening unless he has done something to make them think he is an option. I am not talking about tweeting things to get the Tennessee fans all aflutter. And why would he want to come back here? At Ole Miss the fans expect less. He can steadily build his reputation back up to where he is wanted by the big time jobs. He didn't exactly have many willing to take a chance on him except Ole Miss. Unless he has a soft spot for Tennessee and feels guilty about what he did.

Bruin, if you're fine with being in the same category with the lower half of the league then I guess he's a good defensive coordinator. There is zero elite about Jeremy Pruitt. His stats, that you provided back that up. If he's in the middle, that means there are 6-7 better.

You need to get a grip brother. Average DC? I guess that’s why Fisher, Richt and Saban hired him to run their defenses. Pruitt has mad respect from a defensive standpoint amongst those in the coaching community.

He’s the coach, no need to confirm what everyone knows.

Thought we were one rung higher last year than Sunseri’s 2012 squad?
