the bad news... this is kinda long. the good news....probably won't be a ton of posts from me today, so you can get it all out in one shot.... :)

the AD is going to be an experienced AD, per CDP's comments at the press conf....i've always pushed Ingram. but i'm intrigued by Danny White...the Oregon guy...can't be terrible can he? if that's the pool we're swimming in....i think we'll be good.

as for the head coach, i'll stick to what i said yesterday about having more insight/clarity once the AD is hired, but i'll go back to the comments she made about 'this isn't the place where you try things out'...and integrity.

so, assuming those two things are driving factors in the decision, and NOT knowing who the AD is yet, i'll hedge and say Chadwell fits the "try things out" moniker, and i'd lean away from him for that reason.

i'd lean way far away from Freeze because of all the integrity talk. it's hard for me to believe Kiffin would get serious consideration for the same reason, but i want Kiffin, so i'm willing to exclude him from that discussion..but i do so at my own peril.

i like the idea of bob stoops, cause situationally, sure it would make total sense to hire him for that big money, and just give him the keys to the car. except you're not giving him the keys to the car, because there's 2/3 of a staff already on the payroll. so i don't know how realistic that is.

Napier isn't coming for the reasons that have already been put out there....he wants control, he won't get it.

when it comes to Steele....he fits the "try things out" moniker as well, but the caveat to that is he's a long time SEC coordinator, and the staff changes being made would kinda fit what a steele hire would look like, interim or not. i think in the end, Steele isn't the guy, but he's here if they need him...so i wouldn't rule it out 100%, but safe to say he's not at the top of the board. if we wind up there, it's because we 'wound up' there.....

so who's left as targets, realistic or not?
Marrone is off the board.
BOB...i'm not against it, but at this point, isn't it basically a forgone conclusion he's at Bama too?
(saban hiring former NFL head coaches as position coaches....oof)

fickell
campbell
fleck
herman
clark
brown
caldwell?

as i type this out, and not knowing who the AD is, Kiffin still makes a ton of sense. we have some leverage with him given how it ended the first time, and he checks most of the boxes for qualification. someone would have to make a judgement call on the integrity side of things, and some folks here in town would need to more or less get out of the way...but with Plowman and the right AD, that could happen.

maybe it's because that's what i want to happen? but it does actually make sense.....and it'd be FUN to watch him come back, make things right and get us good again.....it helps solve several problems in recruiting....

anyway....i dont think that happens in the end.

and i won't be mad, really, no matter what happens. gonna be some choppy waters to get thru on this, and there's a ton of moving parts still....not even counting the NCAA portion of the investigation....

tl/dr....give it time, reserve judgement for a minute. as for the transfers out...i do think that had more to do with what their options would be if they stayed vs them quitting on TN. and blaming Kevin Steele for what is happening on that front is just stupid, so stop doing it. lol.
TLDR

thanks brother, it means a lot from you knowing your journey.
BaldBiker gave me some of the best talking up and advice...better than much of my well meaning family. Paying it forward. Glad you have that support system and the writing itch. I know where you’re coming from revealing your loss. Perfect strangers feel the need to apologize and you just need the form notarized.

I decided to make a graph of salaries versus this last season's Sagarin rating.

Basically, those on the right side of the point cloud are those that are underpaid relative to how well they did last year.

Lot of familiar names that we've batted around, but this gives you a way to visualize how much of steal Chadwell, Liepold, Fickell, and Campbell are.

And you can see that UT basically got what it paid for, a coach drawing a middle of the pack salary pulling down meh results. This tells me that he must have been a regal prick and the violations substantial for them to pull the plug, because the admin basically could have written this season off as a fluke because of COVID and the SEC schedule.

Also, how annoyed would you be if you were a Michigan fan?

Edit: Added Louisiana/Napier

Alright, I’m posting this again and using it to say who my picks are.

Pipe dream - Lincoln Riley is underpaid. Make a run at him anyways with an insane offer if you really have FU money. Make Oklahoma pay him what he’s worth, and if he’s a Sexton client that buys you some social capital down the line.

Still need FU money cluster - the Iowa State, Cincinnati, Oregon cluster. All of those programs are Power 5, and are underpaying their coaches relative to results. Campbell is the guy worthy of the brinks truck. He can build a program, and if he can recruit kids to Iowa State, he can get get kids to Knoxville. That’s our “can’t miss.”

High Risk/High Reward cluster - Napier, Liepold, and Chadwell. Those guys have been punching WAY above their weight. They can get it done on the field, but UT’s job is much, much more that coaching ball games. Bartoo thinks Napier is probably waiting on Saban to retire, and we all think that he’s waiting on LSU to move on from Coach O. Liepold and Chadwell are winners, but this job is much, much bigger.

Herman is interesting. I can see the “Football Barnes” logic. The salary to results ratio was basically in line with expectations. On the other side, Herman sounds like Gus results with Pruitt personality. If that’s the case, hard pass. On the other hand, we never heard any of this from his time at Houston, and it could be sour grapes whining from rich boosters who want a natty. If Sark fails, Texas should have the reputation of being a coach killer after what they did to Strong and Herman.

Frankly, I just want a “more with less” guy instead of a fired for doing “less with more.” That’s what will always bother me about Herman, but I think you still give him a hard look to see if the problem was him or Texas. How quickly we forget that LSU wanted him badly...

I still think we end up with Chadwell.

December, I was reticent to share on here, I'm not a fan of people airing their personal stuff in here. It's been devastating but I have a support system. Don't take anything for granted.
So sorry for your loss. Prayers to you and your family and may you find comfort and healing in this painful season.

There is no way on God's green earth that stoops would bring any true fire and drive to win here. I'd 100% go with chadwell over stoops. The guy has been out for a while, doesn't know the southeast, wouldn't be here for 5 to 10 years, and would be way too much money.

Something that hasn’t been mentioned and I just heard Andy Staples talking about it

the new coach will be given a contract that automatically extends with years of probation. They tells me this contract is going to be 6-8 years
i think it was already accepted it would be 5+

I hope yall see what the "insiders" are doing. You throw out a bunch of unattainable candidates you know you can't get and then keep throwing in Steele as fallback. That way when you end up back on Steele people aren't as made because they know you gave it the "college try"....same thing when they were floating out Gruden's name. Matt Campbell would be my top choice but he ain't coming here...dude could get an NFL head coaching job. It is widely know Bob Stoops father died at young age while he was still coaching...that always was in the back of Bob's mind so he didn't want to coach way into his late age. The XFL was basically a part time job...nothing like the grind of FBS football. I would love Kiffin or Freeze but they are too toxic so they aren't even being considered.

BoB is wayyy down my list but I will gladly take him over Steele...anyone over Steele basically.

Now they are floating coordinators Steele could hire...that doesn't work because when those coordinators go get head coaching jobs your screwed. See what happened with Fulmer when Cut went to Ole Miss for the head job. You had the mediocre head coach (figure head/politician) who isn't very smart and the highly intelligent and talented OC who moved on.

You want the smart guy in charge...i.e. Saban, Meyer, Spurrier, etc.

Doesn’t know southeast? He was Spurriers DC for 3 years in the 90’s before getting OU job.

Hi all, been a while I know we are at defcon 1 but

After a lot of toil and tragedy my second novel The Alternator is now live on Amazon:

amazing cover by @LeBleu

slugline:
What if murder wasn't a mystery? For one young man, it is always decided by a simple code of chance taught to him by his mentor, a gruff truck driver named Petty who once took him under his wing. Now a trucker himself, the map savant travels the quickest routes coast to coast through 1990s America listening to the Top 40 countdown and holding the fate of those he encounters in the palm of his hand. Are the rules there to allow the natural order to assert itself or to keep a traumatic past from feeding his dark impulses and spiraling him out of control?

All profits will go to Young-Williams Animal Shelter in honor of my late wife.

Thanks and Go Vols

Dude, I’m so sorry for your loss.

If Steele is allowed to make hires then it looks like we are going the Ole Miss route. Keep Steele as interim then hire freeze after the sanctions are over with.

Morning notes from Hubbs...

In conversations, I still believe that Chancellor Plowman and the administration want to get an AD hire done as quickly as possible and continue to hear it could be done sooner rather than later.

Plowman, Randy Boyd, and John Compton (head of the Board of Trustees) are leading the search. I think they did do some interviews yesterday but I don't know who.

There's still a belief that they are trying to pay big money and swing for a big name. Now some might use Tennessee for a raise in that scenario so who are some quote bigger names?

I don't know who they might be but in googling around Oregon's Rob Mullins seems to come up in every search and he doesn't move. He was a factor at Texas A&M and Florida and is still at Oregon. I don't know that he turned down either one of them but he was in it.

Mark Coyle at Minnesota has some SEC ties. He was on Mitch Barnhart's staff at Kentucky. So there's an SEC tie there. Would there be any kind of interest there? Just a time with an SEC link. I don't think Barnhart has any real interest although if you are paying big money I guess anyone would listen but some people I spoken with don't think there's any way Barnhart moves.

Another guy with SEC ties is West Virginia AD Shane Lyons. He was at Alabama and has a strong compliance background. He is a West Virginia grad so would he want to leave his school? I don't know. But he's apparently pretty well thought of in the AD world.

I don't know that any of them are factors. I'm just spitballing this morning in digging on who a sitting AD at the power 5 level could possibly be if Tennessee is paying that kind of money. It seems like that's the type of candidate they are going after at the start of this search
