Something that hasn’t been mentioned and I just heard Andy Staples talking about it

the new coach will be given a contract that automatically extends with years of probation. They tells me this contract is going to be 6-8 years
Could be why they were talking about 10 years at the press conference

I find it hard to believe that you fire Pruitt and hire Steele. They know how important this hire is and want a successful coach. Steele is not that. If I had to guess, it’s going to be OBrien, Napier, or Chadwell.
Especially since they’re swinging for the fences with the AD hire. You don’t do that and then bargain shop for the HC.

the bad news... this is kinda long. the good news....probably won't be a ton of posts from me today, so you can get it all out in one shot.... :)

the AD is going to be an experienced AD, per CDP's comments at the press conf....i've always pushed Ingram. but i'm intrigued by Danny White...the Oregon guy...can't be terrible can he? if that's the pool we're swimming in....i think we'll be good.

as for the head coach, i'll stick to what i said yesterday about having more insight/clarity once the AD is hired, but i'll go back to the comments she made about 'this isn't the place where you try things out'...and integrity.

so, assuming those two things are driving factors in the decision, and NOT knowing who the AD is yet, i'll hedge and say Chadwell fits the "try things out" moniker, and i'd lean away from him for that reason.

i'd lean way far away from Freeze because of all the integrity talk. it's hard for me to believe Kiffin would get serious consideration for the same reason, but i want Kiffin, so i'm willing to exclude him from that discussion..but i do so at my own peril.

i like the idea of bob stoops, cause situationally, sure it would make total sense to hire him for that big money, and just give him the keys to the car. except you're not giving him the keys to the car, because there's 2/3 of a staff already on the payroll. so i don't know how realistic that is.

Napier isn't coming for the reasons that have already been put out there....he wants control, he won't get it.

when it comes to Steele....he fits the "try things out" moniker as well, but the caveat to that is he's a long time SEC coordinator, and the staff changes being made would kinda fit what a steele hire would look like, interim or not. i think in the end, Steele isn't the guy, but he's here if they need him...so i wouldn't rule it out 100%, but safe to say he's not at the top of the board. if we wind up there, it's because we 'wound up' there.....

so who's left as targets, realistic or not?
Marrone is off the board.
BOB...i'm not against it, but at this point, isn't it basically a forgone conclusion he's at Bama too?
(saban hiring former NFL head coaches as position coaches....oof)

as i type this out, and not knowing who the AD is, Kiffin still makes a ton of sense. we have some leverage with him given how it ended the first time, and he checks most of the boxes for qualification. someone would have to make a judgement call on the integrity side of things, and some folks here in town would need to more or less get out of the way...but with Plowman and the right AD, that could happen.

maybe it's because that's what i want to happen? but it does actually make sense.....and it'd be FUN to watch him come back, make things right and get us good again.....it helps solve several problems in recruiting....

anyway....i dont think that happens in the end.

and i won't be mad, really, no matter what happens. gonna be some choppy waters to get thru on this, and there's a ton of moving parts still....not even counting the NCAA portion of the investigation....

tl/dr....give it time, reserve judgement for a minute. as for the transfers out...i do think that had more to do with what their options would be if they stayed vs them quitting on TN. and blaming Kevin Steele for what is happening on that front is just stupid, so stop doing it. lol.
Can I download that off Amazon? Preferably in Audible form.

Doesn’t know southeast? He was Spurriers DC for 3 years in the 90’s before getting OU job.
that's such and overrated narrative.

Les Miles, Nick Saban, Urban Meyer all won championships in this league, none have roots in the SE.....hell, half the major population centers in the SE are full of transplants anyway....it doesn't matter near as much as it did 30 years ago lol

Glad to see Hubbs (who is obviously 1000000000x more well-sourced than I am) confirming some of the things I'm hearing.

Compton was the third person I heard was in the interview process.

I've been told they are aiming to have a centralized location - likely not in Knoxville - to hold multiple interviews starting Friday and continuing through the weekend. They want a decision this weekend.

Swain talking up Jim Caldwell. Said has heard it only once but believes it could be an intriguing hire.

I love Caldwell. He did a fantastic job with Detroit and they were so dumb for ever firing him. fantastic teacher and great guy that would win in living rooms. He’s also a damn good offensive coach.

Here’s a couple videos that i think people may be interested in.

People were pissed about Marrone, but Caldwell was 26-63 in college and is 66 years old.

Going to completely skip over his NFL career? Of only 2 losing seasons one being when he lost Peyton? The other being 7-9 with lions where he went 36-28 with Lions at 11-5 and 9-7 twice and now see what happened to lions once he was let go? But you want to discuss what he did 21 years ago?

In between his colts/lions tenure he was offensive coordinator of super bowl champion Ravens.

The guy can coach and lead.

During each post-Kiffin search, we've had different leadership in charge (Dooley, Butch, Pruitt). It doesn't matter who the leadership is; we screw this up.
Except we actually have leadership and unity at the top along with the money people. That’s the most important thing out of all this. No more bickering or meddling. Hire an AD. Let him do his job and find a coach.

Steele will not be the HC at the University of Tennessee. The Gardner talk was going on prior to the firing of Pruitt and given the way his contract is written with AU.. you’d be dumb to pass up the chance of having him. Steele hasn’t been given the green light to hire anybody.
