2018- 12-1
-Gave LSU all they wanted in NY6 game. Lost 40-32 back when LSU had a sick defense.
-Also lost star QB, Milton McKenzie, last regular season game. Still won conference championship over a really good Memphis team.
-Destroyed Pitt by 5 TDs.
-I don't care what level or talent you have if you go 12-1 against really good conference competition you can coach. That doesn't just happen.

2019- had to play a freshman with no McKenzie and he ate.... went 10-3.
-Beat Stanford by 3 TDs
-Lost to Pitt by 1 @ Pitt who had a stacked NFL player loaded defense and still dropped 34 points losing by 1.
-Lost to a really good Cincy team @ Cincy by a FG
-Lost @ Tulsa by a FG.
-Destroyed Marshall in bowl game by 4 TDs.

Again a freshman QB and averaged 43.3 PPG.

2020- 6-4

-Posters ITT telling me they had around 10 players opt out
-Destroyed Georgia Tech 49-21
-Lost to a really good Tulsa team by a TD. Tulsa lost to Ok State by 9, Miss State by 2 and Cincy by 3.
-Lost to Memphis by 1 point
-Lost to Cincy by 3 who turned out to be a Top 10 team in the country. Scored 33 on that Luke Fickell defense.
-Lost bowl game to a buzzsaw BYU team with a QB who is about to go Top 5.

Averaged 41 PPG.

This place is unbelievable.
Get in line sheep 🐑

Great post about Heupel’s record on VQ:

Can we quit with the garbage that this guy isn't an offensive stud or coach? They play in a really really good conference that is very competitive top to bottom. He lost 3 games by a possession this past year.

If he is the guy we need to give him a blank check for his DC and defensive staff. If I am Heupel I hand the keys to Steele and let him get Garner and T Will and I handle the offense.

The man can fall out of bed and score points just like he did at Missouri when he absolutely put it on our head 2 straight years. He helped turn Milton McKenzie into a Heisman contender. And scored just as much with a freshman QB when McKenzie was lost on one play.

Hilarious we have "fans" trashing this potential hire because all they did was look at a record in a Covid year with no context. And the other reality is this.... Danny White, who prioritizes leadership and culture, watched this guy daily for 3 years. He absolutely has a grasp of what kind of CEO he would be.
Thanks, Bass. Bringing the heat.

ok that’s a relief, his close losses will count as Wins on UT’s record. Good thing no other teams deal with injuries and opt outs.
I don’t want Heupel either but why in the world do we hold a covid season against anyone? He lost almost an entire 11 man unit and people expect that not to have an effect.

I mentioned earlier that I’d dive a bit into the stats behind Heupel’s tenure at UCF. If y’all want to talk more about numbers/methodologies we can do that, but I wanted to give a overview tonight.

Over the past couple years, I’ve tweaked a rating system I’ve made to evaluate coaches based on two criteria:

1. Overall performance. Better coaches generally have better teams. Obvious enough.

2. Performance relative to talent on the roster. We can talk for days about the state of development, but raw talent is something we can account for, via 247’s composite. Basically, more talent leads to a higher expectation of performance, and I want to see what coaches outperform their expected values the most.

To measure performance, I’m not going with wins and losses, but ESPN’s efficiency metrics. These are adjusted for SOS and pace, so we can avoid all the “they ain’t played nobody” and total-offense pitfalls. These metrics should tell us just how “good” the team was that year.

After evaluating performance and measuring against what they should’ve done according to their talent level, I’ve placed the values on a classic school grading scale. Saban gets a solid 100/A+, guys like Herman/Doeren are in the C+ range, and Pruitt comes in at a D+.

So now, based on the years 2015+, here are the results. I’ll list a few candidates here.

Freeze
Overall: 80
Offense: 87
Defense: 72

Herman
Overall: 79
Offense: 76
Defense: 80

Fleck
Overall: 78
Offense: 81
Defense: 71

Napier
Overall: 78
Offense: 86
Defense: 66

Chadwell
Overall: 74
Offense: 78
Defense: 67

Kiffin
Overall: 74
Offense: 81
Defense: 65

Dykes
Overall: 73
Offense: 80
Defense: 66

Leipold
Overall: 70
Offense: 72
Defense: 70

Healy
Overall: 58
Offense: 71
Defense: 50

Heupel
Overall: 88
Offense: 91
Defense: 76

Frankly, that offense is a machine, and it’s a consistent machine. Every year graded better than Kiffin’s best at FAU, without the drawback of the 2 that were barely meeting (or slightly failing) talent expectations.

Heupel’s overall profile of results vs. expectations is actually right there with Gundy/Wittingham, and his offensive grade is above the likes of Gundy/Mack Brown/Freeze/Petersen.

I’ve said it earlier, his recruiting and program building is a massive unknown, but this guy is no Sonny Dykes on the field.

Enjoy, and hit me up with any requests, data, questions if you’re interested.

Good stuff, thanks! If this is the hire (Campbell till it’s not) he will have the opportunity to get better talent than what he has had. Pair him with a good defensive coordinator. Based on DW’s reputation, if he is the best candidate willing to take the job, I will respect that and look forward to this year.

Been trying to find some hype videos or pregame speeches for Heupel to see what kind of fire he's got. Not really having much success.

Anyone? Sounds like he's got the x's and o's but I just wonder how inspiring he is. I know you say Tennessee recruits itself but I just worry about his ability to pull in the big recruits needed in the sec. I don't like hearing he's a lazy recruiter.

But if he's the guy then he has my support. From Whites reputation you have to trust he's going to make the best hire he has available. Everyone have a great day and hopefully today is the day we can finally put this search to bed.

Good Morning VN!!
Just woke up. Got on from a hiatus during dinner and the bball game.

150 pages behind. Maybe we'll just skip that can of crazy.

Josh Heupel. Ok. Sort of meh. But, LET'S GO VOLS!!

More shockingly @Neyland Rising POSTED!!!!! DROP THE BOOMS, BOYS!!!

That bit right there craps all over the rest of the statement. Had “better talent” and won fewer games.

There is no possible assessment of the facts that makes this true. Frost won 19 games in two seasons. Hueple won 22 in first two seasons. Hueples worst year, hobbled by covid, was the same as frosts: 6 wins.

Wake up and am 60+ pages behind. I think there surely has to be some good nugs worth scrolling through. 60+ pages later...nothing except Mehupel talk and trying to convince yourselves he would work out. @Neyland Rising post was the only one worth the scrolling.

And it’s not Heupel. No way that was our target all along. Too many other coaches make more sense that would surely take this job for the kind of money we are willing to throw out there.
