Part of my thoughts about Osovet is Heupel just interviewed him to coach WR at UCF before all this happened. Osovet is also a good recruiter for the NE region. But I agree coaching TE is not what he excels at
Two things. One, JH didn't hire Osovet. Two, hard to say he doesn't excel with TEs. How would we know? We didn't use them when JG was QB.

I thought this as well, but when you've been the QB and offensive coordinator at a place like Oklahoma and have a somewhat vague idea of what it's like in the SEC I think he's ahead of the curve.
I have a feeling he's in good hands with our new AD. I bet he'll have all the support a coach could ever ask for. Need to make sure we have the best strength coach money can buy.

Also Heupal doesn't seem like he expected to be seen as a hero when he got here. Pruitt/Butch both did.

He seemed truly grateful and proud to be here. He probably knows he's got a lot to prove to us. He's been around big programs. Hopefully he quietly has a bit of a chip on his shoulder and is hoping to make the doubters look like fools. Our program could use an underdog mentality. We've been all hype in the past and ended up being disappointing.

I'll probably keep my unconditional coach love at bay until we see some wins. But for right now I think I kinda like the guy.

Ron just posted that the current WR coach at UCF most likely will be coming, so Osovet would have to coach a different position

Staff needs to be assembled quickly. JH needs to take stock of his roster and decide if there's anyone out there he needs to recruit(Malone would be nice, but it's probably too late) because NSD is a week away. Needs to decide if he's gonna honor whoever is still committed that didn't sign early. Plus, he needs to be looking at transfers to fill out the roster before they all choose other schools. There's a lot to do in a limited amount of time. How he handles it may very well speak to the type of coach he'll be here.

What if this guy came into our program and realized we had all the parts to a Corvette assembled into a golf cart by the previous coach?

Maybe we can surprise some people next year?
On the offensive side of the ball, I think he is probably going to discover that pretty quickly.

On the defensive side, I imagine he is going to need a lot of help.

I think Heupel is the equivalent of a Tom Herman hire. Needs a Staff of great defensive coaches and Recruiters. It will be interesting to see if he's able to handle the kind of fan scrutiny and pressure that UT has here. I think he'll need 3 -4 years to compete for the East. Overall B grade hire.

I think he has the perfect temperament for it. Laid back Much like lane was without the social antics. That’s what I’m more excited about than anything to be honest. Looking around at the best ran teams in all of football there’s a vast majority of them ran by laid back players coaches style leadership. Chiefs, Seahawks, Titans, rams, Oklahoma, Ohio state, Clemson to some degree.

I think just being “one of the guys” is important now. Saban and Urbans method works perfect for them but there’s far more examples of the other style imo. i think we’re going to have one of the best vibes and cultures we’ve had in a long time rather quickly. You can already see player chatter and buy in like we haven’t in a long time.

He got me when he said he couldn't wait to run through the T and hear "Rocky Top" playing, and it gave him goose bumps thinking about it. Kiffin tried to make us USC, and Pruitt tried to make us AL.

Thank you all for being so positive. Just after all of the hype we have had the last week for all the big coaching names and we land on this guy, it has just felt underwhelming to me. I usually get super hyped after opening PCs, but I didn’t this time.

I am REALLY hoping this works out. This dude is an offensive wizard. Once we get that first good recruit or assistant hire I’ll probably flip like a switch and be all in. At least I hope

Btw I love all of you on here. We all have one common fandom and the same goals. We just need some wins! Go vols!🍊

As stated, I finally managed to avoid the big fish hype and was waiting on the maybe hire.
I like the offensive potential and I like that he should have a better defense than he's used to, which seemed to hinder him. And I love exciting offenses, it just makes it more fun.

Despite some really good digging and explainations by the RF home crew (serious), still uncomfortable with his recruiting and the downward trend.
Seems we're right where we probably all knew we would be "with a good staff" and "maybe".
By game day, I'm shooting for "hopefully"!

Maybe we will actually see him and everyone else have a defined role and not change positions every 3 weeks.

Okay so I've calmed down a bit today and I am over the temper tantrum of the hire---- BUTTTTT, you have to agree that we MUST get a strong Defensive staff that can recruit and develop players, or all of this is toast.
