We have two safeties without SEC speed returning and we lost our best corner to the draft and rising DB talent to transfer. Add in likely losing both starting LBs and being Ole Miss and outscoring people is the only option
Yeah, that's fine, but go look at Missouri in 2017. This offense can be boom or bust - they were awful in a handful of SEC games.

I think Heupel will be able to recruit better skill position players here thus raising the ceiling, but if the opposing defense can play man most of the time against this offense, they can shut it down.

Really, really need a defense that can keep everything in front of it - not something like Grantham's defenses where he blitzes the piss out of the opposing team and either gets home or gives up 40 points.

True. I think they knew Franklin and Elliott would most likely say no and they had Heupel whenever they wanted. So they kicked the tires but always knew they had JH. And DW has familiarity with him and what he can do. The man was 28-8 and you can’t scoff at that, no matter what he inherited. Plus you get him at $4 million a year. I’m sure they knew he could put up points, which is how you win. This gives you $4-5 million for a defensive staff and make big hires. Let’s hope that happens. They need to nail the defensive hires.
I'm in the middle of trying to hire for two positions right now. I have interviewed several guys. One guy fits what I want. I'm still going through the motions of interviewing even though I know I've already interviewed the guy I'm hiring.

UT is giving some pretty sweet deals, with significant salary bumps and escalators, risk-mitigation clauses and built-in deal extenders. So strap in-- UT intends to ride with these guys for a while.

As far as people paying their own buyouts, it's good PR... but there's often behind-the-scenes help with that.

Who do you think would be some good targets for coordinators and assistants?

Oh I believe they had the money to get whomever they could get big name wise but it didn't turn out like they thought cause nobody wanted it. But as usual we run off anyone that has info to give.
The truth is somewhere in the middle, I'm sure.

The most likely path was always going to be paying around $4M a year for a coach that has some warts.

You said you were glad Dabo talked TE out of the job and that we got the right guy. If he went to TE first, shouldn’t that tell us something? As for what the AD said, they always say that but surely you don’t believe that. It is crystal clear we went deep into trying to get Franklin for one.
We have had coaches talk about how coaches weren't even their wife's first pick at the opening press conference. We don't always say we got our #1 target. TE was probably just in the interview stage when he withdrew from the choice. He had no idea he was down on our list, significantly below Huepel

Crazy thing is they have offensive talent...just are not putting it together whatsoever. Need Springer, Keon, and JJJ to play much more aggressive.
I am just not a fan of the motion offense.I would like the see these guys playing in more of a free flowing high pick and roll dribble drive O.

Runs that 3-3-5. I’ll defer to the gurus for cost benefit analysis. Also recently signed an extension...hope White didn’t return that Centurion card.
The 3-3-5 was suspect against the two back power running games so it went out of vogue. It is coming back as it allows you to be multiple and add extra DBs against the spread without a ton of rules. Iowa States version the last couple of years has been considered cutting edge and many NFL DCs go there to study what they are doing. Like any system, it's about adjusting it to your people and getting them lined up properly so they can play fast.

I can respect that. Tell you what, let's say I throw in a 10 million signing bonus for you and a signing bonus for each of the men on your staff equivalent to one year of each of their pay. Do you think the guys who work for you would be interested in that?

I'm interested in that. Shoot me a contact number and I'll drag my agent and attorney out of bed and have them Zoom you in their PJs in ten minutes to wrap it up.

Holy hell dude. Give it a f****** rest. Everyone that is still bitching and moaning go away for a few days and think about other things. Look for some positives in your life ffs. I am pretty confident this guy WANTS to be here. He asked everyone to give him a chance..... Never know may surprise you. The only guarantees in life are death and paying taxes sheesh
Get bent dude. It was a horrible take and you know it. Not bitching just tired of people trying rationalize this hire as what’s “best”. We, you included, have been going through the same routine for the past 15 years. Same process 4 hires in a row. Underwhelming hire, try to find silver lining, gain false hope, get let down once again. I’m not mad at the hire, but that doesn’t mean I have to be a pumper either. So if you’re going to try and bash people for having a semi-objective viewpoint then GTFO a public message board.
