Yeah, I’m fine with him bringing his staff for the reasons you mentioned. But two things give me pause:

1) It seems like he chased Lebby and Briles and neither wanted to come. So, by default, there are people he didn’t want to bring with him who he is now bringing.

2) none of these guys have a known track record of being elite recruiters. If the head coach isn’t good at it, you need a few hounds. Maybe Burns or Merritt evolve into it quickly.

Also I’m worried about not having anyone with Tennessee ties on the coaching staff. I think it really helps to have alums who will go the extra mile and also provide a bridge to the “Tennessee” way. This is Josh Heupel’s program now - I don’t mean to suggest otherwise. But there needs to be some guys there who can help him understand Tennessee and what the fanbase and former players want/expect.
Don’t need any damn Tennessee ties, what’s that got us lately. NOTHING

I don’t think this is a Tennessee thing. Most new hires around the country bring on a couple of alums in the staff.

Clemson is like the poster child for this example. I think there are like 6 coaches who played there on staff.

Oh by all means let's copy what other teams do because that's always equaled success here!

I think with Lebby and Briles, it was more about shooting for the moon. Since neither one of the those guys is likely, it seems like Huepel plans to stick with the set up he had at UCF, with him as OC and Golesh as Co-OC.

I agree on the Tennessee connections. Would be nice to have plenty of those on defensive side. Mayo would be shooting for the moon, but him, Steele, or Chavis, can you think of any other DC candidate that would have strong Tennessee ties (and I mean recruiting ties to the state of TN, not necessarily ties to the program.

Valid points but I think a little overstated and don’t have to be hindrances. If he didn’t get choice 1, 2, 3 and so on, doesn’t mean he didn’t “want” to bring who is coming, or that who is coming will not be as good as choice 1, 2, 3....
He’ll recruit fine, comparable to where we’ve been the past decade. I’m tired of losing to teams that recruit much worse than us.
I love Tennessee. Would be cool for every staff member to be a VFL, but doesn’t mean we would be good. Basketball side of the house is doing fine. At one point does one get Tennessee ties? Just because someone doesn’t have one now doesn’t mean it can’t grow quick

Golesh has the rep of being a good recruiter but we will see.

We will have to get use to some of that.... the goal of his team is to create turnovers.... negative plays and cause field goals in the red zone.... we will give up a lot of yards in between.
I think you can expect a very aggressive defense under Heupel. He wants the ball back as quickly as possible. I think with better talent and a DC that's more new school than Shannon it will work just fine. I don't think the DC necessarily has to have a big name, just needs an understanding that the game has changed. Haha. When DW said in his first press conference that we would be aggressive in everything we do, he wasn't lying. And don't expect Heupel to kick on 4th down every time. He's not a huge fan of kicking. Haha

Doubt he would be interested but if you want some elite development I would give Larry Johnson at Ohio State a call for the DC role. He's been their Dline coach for about 6 years and he is an incredible developer of talent and players love him.

Prob the best DL coach in the country. He makes $1.13M per year as a position coach.

Insane.

Good. We may not have a kicker.

I just noticed that Jim Leavitt has fallen so far that he’s the DC at SMU. Wow. I’ve always thought he was a highly respected and talented coach (minus the whole player punching thing). If not Steele I wouldn’t mind having him on staff. He’s recruited Florida historically well, right?
