The fact that you respect the barbers opinion just massively lowered my respect for your opinion..that dude is a vindictive, agenda driven moron. I absolutely loath that he has any influence over kids. If Buck thinks like that hack, then that just goes to show more than ever that VFLs are a massive part of the problem. We will never get back if they continue to be roadblocks to everything that is not their idea. This thinking is correct: if you have A+ development, you can win with C+ classes.
However, my issue is this exact same line of thinking was used when both Butch and Pruitt were hired.
We expected Butch to be a bad recruiter because he had never been in the SEC but he turned out to be pretty good at selling the university - just couldn’t evaluate and develop SEC talent.
We expected Pruitt to be a great recruiter and when the 2018 and 2019 classes were lackluster we ran with “these guys know how to teach football we’ll be fine.”
I guess the point I’m trying to make is, we are assuming Heupel is a great developer of talent, but with little evidence to support it. We’re fans and we want things to be, so we act like they are.
None of these points means we won’t be successful and win more than we lose under Heupel, but when someone like @de1conley says they are concerned about recruiting, it’s a legitimate concern. In the absence of knowing Heupel is an elite developer, it makes sense that we want/need to recruit at an elite level immediately to give ourselves some wiggle room.
B development with C+ recruiting will win 6 games a year and we’ll be doing this again in 2024.
The way he intentionally rode the bench on Saban’s coaching staff while simultaneously suckling Tennessee’s teat just for jollies means I have and never will have respect for the man. Most coaches have an actual role (O coordinator, line coach, etc). Butch had no role except to screw UT. That’s a reflection of low character imho.I think Butch could do pretty good at Arkansas State. They’re paying him $850k/year plus incentives. He has a $2m buyout but I think he’s trying to restart his career. Our severance pay ran out last year.
I’m not sure what his career trajectory is, probably from A-State to some ACC, B1G, or B12 school. I don’t think he ever comes back to the SEC. I think the job here was just too big for him. I think the job here is perhaps too big for most coaches. I think Butch lost control of the job here and I think that is a flaw in his character, not so much moral, more like fortitude. jmo.
I watched his introductory press conference but skipped a lot of his answers to questions because he’s as long winded as ever and it’s mostly all coach-speak. He didn’t really talk about Tennessee other that thanking Saban for accepting a rival coach into his organization back when we fired him.
He said he thought he improved as a coach by working for a defensive minded head coach. Also said A-State had the best facilities and best football program in the country. Said he had 972 text messages since his hire had been announced 4 days prior. I thought that was vintage Butch.
In most ways he was the same old Butch but I’ve always thought he was a smart man so I do think he’ll likely do good there. Of course he’s in the conference with Appy State and Coastal Carolina so it may not be in his first year. Time will tell. I was never fond of his personality but I'm glad I've reached the point where I can genuinely wish him well. jmo.
