In some ways you are right, but if you think this "up to 11" fanbase will not create a impenetrable toxic cloud then you are nuts.

I have never witnessed a group of people that are so perversely willing to cut off their nose to spite their face.
We will always create that environment.... we need to start helping the program.

I agree, but the admin needs to do what it takes to instill confidence. All they are doing now is frustrating a battered fanbase by not getting crap done.

If they hire a junk pile DC, the base will go into the season with their teeth bared ready to tear them apart.

You think we’ve drawn out a search for a defensive coordinator for 3 plus weeks on purpose? Especially on the heels of spring practice, when every day is crucial in order for the staff to get their systems in place.

Also what proof do you need? A handwritten letter with a carrier pigeon from the coaches saying they’ve turned the job down?

Imo this all screams JH had no clue he was getting this job and it was rushed. You typically have your coordinators lined up as part of your interview pitch and perhaps it takes longer to finish out the position coaches. This screams none of that took place and DW went with the hand he knew hoping they can spend money on a DC to lure one without one in line already

Not concerned at all. I dont believe we've been turned down like it's being portrayed. I think Al Washington was the top choice (isn't that what you're hearing @Stoerner Fumbles?), and talks with him stretched several days...4 to 6 days, imo....maybe longer. With that being said...

Heupel has been on the job 18 days. So, take away 4 to 6 days from that, and we're looking at around 2 weeks to ponder, pivot, talk, proceed.
Bama lost Sark on Jan 3, and O'Brien was named on the 21st...18 days. Aurburn hired Harsin on Dec 22, if I'm not mistaken...he hired Mason 15 days later, and Bobo, 16 days later. Beamer, at USCe, took 30+ days to find OC AND DC.

The reason we are concerned, or freaked out, or bitching and belly aching is because we're Tennessee. We burn sh!t in the middle of the street whenever things don't go our way; we conduct revolts, and then justify said revolt with something half the people revolting weren't even aware of (you'll never convince me that Shiano Sunday was about Penn St...it had everything to do with Jon Gruden not being named HC). Some of us are so miserable and lost, about 5 or 6 days ago, we started begging for John Jancek back. See what I'm saying? It's pathetic. MANY on here would believe it if some random poster, acting like an insider, said Bill Belichick was coming; then, whenever it didn't happen, they would set themselves on fire. Saw an example today: someone just mentioned Shoop; and, before long posters were asking where the Shoop news was coming from.

Also, another note, just to give some more perspective about time and patience: Rich Rodriguez turned Bama down on Dec 8, 2006...Nick Saban was hired 26 days later, on Jan 3, 2007. Can you imagine 26 days of this place, if that happened. HOLY SH!T!

Twenty-six days. UT fired Pruitt and Fulmer on Jan 18...Danny White hired Jan 22...Josh Heupel hired Jan 27. UT fired an AD and HC, and had both positions filled in 9 days; and, still, this place was melting down.

Again, this rebuild is going to take all of us: school, AD, coaches, players, fans. Yet to be seen if the other four will live up to their part of the bargain; but, as of this moment, many of us fans are failing miserably...completely melting down because things are not working within OUR individual time frame. Danny White (a move that ALL of college athletics called GRAND SLAM) hasn't been here a month, and some already want him run off. THAT'S how ridiculous some are acting. I would be ashamed of myself; but, hell...it's 2021, looking like an ass has become cool somehow. Glad I didn't get the memo.
All. Of. This.

We need better proof that most on here has provided. That being mainly their personal opinion.

I don’t think that’s fair in this case. I’m sure he had whom he wanted and thought he could get but this job dictated that not happening. There was only a week for him to get his staff together preparing to get the job and it obviously takes longer than that to get a yes to this mess we created

That is our problem with trying to fix this mess.... our team is an absolute wreck to people outside Tennessee so we have to rebuild our image, brand, and our talent..... there are already fans that dislike Danny white and he hasn’t done anything overly positive or negative yet.....They wanted Washington and a lot of the same fans were upset about hiring a d/c that had not called plays but then these same fans were upset when he turned us down..... our fans need to get a grip on reality and support this program.... all of us want to win but it helps no one constantly overreacting like we tend to do.

Agreed. Could still be House. Could be McGoogle from Tx Tech. Gotta wonder how much further Conklin is down the list from these guys...either way that ship has sailed if don't hear about him by say noon.

Really, it

Its going to be a crap shoot at this point. Everyone keeps bringing up how hyped we were when Shoop was hired. Same goes for Cheney. Most would've given that hire a B+ grade at the outset. But it ended up an D-, some fault due to Big Jim, so due to Cornbread.
I blame Chaney a lot less than I do Pruitt.

I agree with all that..but it ain't happening. We have been used and abused for over a decade, and that is not our fault. The dysfunction in the administration is not our fault. The fact that they "Chernobyled" the program leading to this mess...is not our fault.

Treating us like mushrooms isn't helping the situation. Feeding us bull**** and keeping us in the dark is only further exasperating a fatigued and battered fanbase.

I want to be hopeful, I believe that is all most of us want, but this DC search is not giving us any. I understand in principle why DW can not and
should badly overpay for a good DC, but at this point he is obviously going to have to pay a lot more than is prudent, or we are going to end up with a junkpile choice.

Something to keep in mind...Sunseri and Shoop were considered really good to great hires and mostly struggled here. Ansley and Pruitt were thought to be an awesome combo, but we know what happened.

Justin Wilcox was really an unknown from Boise State and did a really solid job for having Nick Reveiz and Herman Lathers as his LB.

All that to say, whoever we end up with is a total crap shoot and they may boom or bust 🤷‍♂️

Wilcox wasn’t exactly unknown. He had done the best job of defending that Oregon offense out there and made a very good name for himself beating them

but to your overall point we won’t know if this hire is a good one until 2-3 years down the road

Great post.

Did you forget about the one where we wound up with Pruitt? I do agree that this one has been very frustrating.
or Dooley, or Butch for that matter. being told "no" is old hat if you've been around the last 15 years.......

and to be honest, that's fine, i can't really blame any of these guys for listening, and parlaying it in to some more at their current job if the opportunity presents itself. and i can't blame them for not jumping on board. we're kind of a train wreck with a very uncertain future.

here's what i do like, and is wholly different from the previous searches' reactions to being told "no". we're not OVERreacting.

and that's important.

it's clear we're not getting anyone from the top of the list. that doesn't mean you make it worse by settling on someone just to say you got someone. that's exactly how we got Dooley, and to a lesser degree, Butch. and pruitt, but for different reasons.

so, if you're embarrassed, that's a YOU problem. nobody will care how long it takes to hire a DC if he turns out to be a good one....so if you want to walk around with paper bags on your face b/c of this, feel free. but you're the only ones that will even know, or care, why you're wearing them.

I just want a guy that the players will buy into and that they will play hard for. I think if that happens the positive numbers will happen and recruiting will take care of itself.
