That's a very good point I haven't considered. Maybe he knows he might not play this year, but he'd have the opportunity to get coached by Heupel and learn from him for a year or two before going where he has an opening.
Playing devils advocate, but we haven't seen any of these QB's run this offense. How does anyone know what Mauer can do?CJH wanted him at UCF for a reason.......JMO - no arrows please. Heup recruited Milton to the roster because you alway take a shot at developing talented players if you have a spot on the roster to give even if they have already failed elsewhere. Milton failed. He was at fault and maybe, so was the coaching. Terrible accuracy and decision making. Very talented and physically imposing. So you take a shot on the guy figuring it out if you are Heup since he had a vacant spot in the QB room. He will have to learn the O scheme as well as player tendencies while they learn his. You go with a guy who can run when you don't have a guy that can get it done in the passing game. So if HB flames out at some point in camp or during the season, you have somebody that can potentially put points on the board with his feet while learning to be his best self as a passer. Jackson will be here next season and he fits the O scheme perfectly.
But being a good QB always starts first between the ears. You have to think correctly and quickly. That was JG's major problem - it never clicked.
Personally, I see nothing of Maurer and Hooker that tells me they can run this O well. Which is another reason you would bring in Milton.
